- As a new corrections officer, your first day on the job can be one of the most challenging experiences of your career. The corrections profession is not for the faint of heart, and the first day can be especially daunting. In this video, we'll discuss five key points that make the first day challenging for corrections officers.
Firstly, the pace of the job is fast. Corrections officers are responsible for maintaining order and ensuring the safety of inmates and staff members. You will need to learn quickly how to move through the facility efficiently while remaining alert and vigilant at all times.
Secondly, inmates will judge you. As a new corrections officer, you will be scrutinized by inmates who are always on the lookout for weakness or vulnerability. It's essential to remain confident and assertive while also treating inmates with respect and dignity.
Thirdly, you will experience a lot of emotions. Corrections officers witness some of the most traumatic and distressing situations imaginable. On your first day, you may be confronted with aggressive or violent behavior, and it's essential to remain calm and composed while still doing your job effectively.
Fourthly, you must look individuals in the eye when speaking to them. Corrections officers must establish a sense of authority and mutual respect with inmates. One way to do this is to maintain eye contact while speaking to them. It shows that you are confident and in control.
Lastly, you have to say the word no. As a corrections officer, you will be required to enforce rules and regulations. There will be times when you will have to say no, even if it's to a request or demand from an inmate. It's essential to be firm but fair and to explain the reason for your decision.
In conclusion, the first day as a corrections officer can be a challenging experience. But by understanding and being prepared for the five key points we discussed, you can overcome the obstacles and start your career on the right foot.

As a former Correctional Officer,,,I can say that what worked for me was simple. 1. Keep your word-Period!!! 2. You are not Judge,,,Jury & Executioner,,, they're doing there time. Treat them like you want to be treated. 3. Respect -Give it & it will be given,,,often earned. 4. Be brutally honest. That's well appreciated. 5. Do NOT try & be a tough guy w a loud mouth,,, you'll catch a reality check sooner or later. The goal is to go home @ the end of your shift.
Thank you I have a interview tomorrow
@@shaylovetaylor9612 NP & hope you get the job.
As someone who graduated from police academy with a few recruits who went on to work at the prison I always had so much respect for corrections I don’t think i could ever work there myself I know working the streets are dangerous but it’s something about the prisons I couldn’t do
Thank you for commenting and watching! Thank you for what you do on the streets! OTOM

@@redloopylol THATS why your a cop for a reason . You should know what you signed up for ..

I worked corrections for 3 years. On the midnights, I had 188 inmates to myself. This is the tour we did building maintenance, cooked two meals (1400 trays), and got inmates ready for transports. Inmates never bothered me. Staff did. They snitched, undermined others, brought in contraband, and slept with inmates. Cops wrote us parking tickets while we worked. They hated us because so many of us got arrested. I say never take this shit job. Even the public doesn't like you. Just wait for mandatory overtime forced down your throat.
Everything you wrote is accurate and widespread. It's a corrupt system full of egotistical, dishonest administrators and staff. Better off learning a trade.
You’re exactly right! That’s why I quit! It wasn’t the inmates it was the staff!
If I decide to do it I'd do it for two years max.
is it true there are unlimited hours you can do a week if you wish??
Also, can't use your cell phone your whole shift from what I gather. Gotta lock it away
I start my academy on the 5th thank you for the guidance

Thanks for this informative information
i dont want to do it.. but
100,000 a year sounds good to me.
100,000 isn’t nothing if you’re dead. I’m not saying even getting stabbed. The stress, staff, etc… can’t eat you alive. Also, to pull in 100,000 you’re pretty much living there. I’m not trying to talk you out of it. Some people love it, some people hate it. Good thing is if you don’t like it you can always quit and move on. It’s def an experience!
100k a year? They start out at $18/hr around me. I'm not going to do the math but you'd have to work a boat load of overtime to break 100k around here.

just right after I graduated from High school, my acquaintance that I knew wanted to pursue and study to become a Correctional Officer. Told me, all you do throughout your shift is sit on your lazy @$$ and get paid. I dunno if that was the case, but we were young then so hopefully now that we've matured, he probably thinks differently of it by now.

Im a Correctional Officer myself and really think we should play this video at the Jail i work in. So many people come and go because they just cant handle the stress from the type of work we do.
I can see the grief and trauma in his eyes when telling the story about the guy who took his own life on his day 1.💔
I don’t know, I’m not buying it.. Something about that story isn’t adding up-at first he said on his very first round he found the inmate. 2 minutes later he said that inmate he found was one who he’d done rounds on for 10 years.

After a while you just don't want to do this anymore, the mandatory overtime is MASSIVE driving factor that kills a lot of correctional careers before they even have time to really start.
Toxic Leadership that work 8 hour days, while your being mandated to work mandatory 16 hour shifts back to back and then questioned why you can't stay awake or get to work on time because your a zombie after a while and then get disciplined for it.
Your friends will promote from officer to sergeant and become an entirely different person, you'll see officers in relationships with sergeants and then they'll abuse that persons power if you disagree with or step out of line with them.
Prioritize your mental health first, this career can be rewarding but a lot of problems out of your control can also drive you away very fast as it has me.
can you request extra hours after shift and on your days off??
Very good 👍
I've been in the field going on 18 years and NO is my middle name!

@HassanBambam Its not difficult. With repetition it becomes second nature.
Hardest part of the job is dealing with stress and emotions and the effects of burn out.
Be confident and do everything you can to leave work at work and home at home.
Do you think it’s possible taking college courses while doing this job?
@venusfoo9667 I've had a partner do it. Get an accommodation if it's a government job. In many cases they will help you with a schedule if you're doing schooling.
Our employer is OVER accommodating. You can literally write your own work schedule.

Do you mean Oaks in Manistee? Or Woodland in Whitmore Lake?
I can be shy at times and I’m not the best communicator (starting conversations/small talk). So I shouldn’t even try to get on??
It takes practice and repetition. Most people in corrections have to expand out of their comfort zone and try new things like communication. I’ve seen some very shy people become excellent communicators!
“Everyone will hate you. Even your co workers…” have fun!!
Yup . WHISTLEBLOWERS. Get the worst once a CO gots a GREEN LIGHT ON him ..
My first day, got sent to the worst Dorm in the prison.
How did that go
That’s how it works unfortunately. Like being a Cop. “Most” Correction Officers, Cops, etc… with seniority don’t want to work with the worst inmates, in the hood, etc…
Years ago I asked a man who just became a cop for like less then a year. I asked him “Correctional officers are pretty much prison guards huh?” He said “Yes & No”
They are the same thing. People just get too hung up on titles.
Technically it's officer because majority of us are sworn in as peace officers under federal / provincial(state) jurisdiction.

I've been in the service for 20 years and have now decided to change careers... you don't get the appropriate appreciation from your superiors or from the public. The press only reports when an official has done something wrong. Otherwise we are on our own every day. It is a corrupt world where nepotism is practiced and those who belong to a certain circle are promoted. It is one of the most frustrating jobs. no backing from anyone. everything you do can and will be used against you. You have to put up with a lot and you won't be a happy person that way. I don't even want to talk about getting old. and then there are the prisoners! if you understand what I mean!
ill be starting the academy sooon
