    Welcome back to Model Railroading with Jack Burgess. Jack built not one, not two, not three, but even as many as 4 levels in some places on his layout.
    In this episode, he talks about what led him to design his astounding Yosemite Valley Railroad layout the way he did. What considerations were taken into account, and how he decided where things should go, etc...
    The insight provided here might save you a lot of time and frustration!

    Hi Jack, lost count of how many times I’ve come back to your channel, always a delight, always learning something new.
    I think multi-decking is an art form that has been successfully masters by only a few, and your layout demonstrates how to achieve it.
    As an aside, many years ago we travelled to your beautiful country from Australia, and drove up to Yosemite along the valley, while travelling up I imagined the possibility of a railroad along the valley, it wasn’t until we where at El Portal that I realised there was a railroad, now so many years later you gave completed the picture.
    Hoping to shake your hand one day, very best regards Stanley

    Hi Jack. Always interesting learning about your railroad. Definitely a work of art.
    I've been researching lately about double deck layout designs and whether I should go with some sections in a double deck format.
    I am very much into a mountain style railroad with wide vertical separation of tracks as I was (still am) a big John Allen fan and double decks make it very difficult to achieve this feature. However, I want a much longer mainline and I'm toying with having some areas in a double deck design.
    It is very difficult to visualize all of this prior to starting my layout over. In some areas, I am currently ripping out mountain sections that have been there almost 30 years and boy does that hurt! Right now it is a mess also with tons of plaster dust all over the floors, etc. Not sure how to get that dust up without creating more dust!
    Again, always a pleasure hearing about your fine layout. We actually chatted years ago via email. You were very generous with your time and suggestions.
    All the best.

      @@robertweber3140 One thing I've figured out about Jack is that every single feature he adds to his work is as well-thought-out as you can possibly make it, and nothing is done "just because." This kind of methodical approach is what makes his work unique among modelers. Not to say other people don't think things through, but to say that it's done very consistently on this YV layout!

    Once again we're treated to another great video from Jack's Yosemite Valley. Although it's doubtful I'll ever build a multi-deck layout, the information Jack gives us in these videos carries over to every other facet of design for a layout. Also, we get to see more and more of the YV in each video. That is really great for those of us never likely to see the YV in person.

    • @tsgmultimedia
      @tsgmultimedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The cabinets are particularly nice, keeping what would otherwise be clutter out of view. A lot of guys use valances under the fascia to hide whatever is stored. It's never completely effective at doing so. If you have the ability to build a solid-face like Jack's cabinets, and if the design is functional in your space, it's worth doing so.

    I didn't use a helix, I used a long tangent 4% grade that connected level 1 to 2, and 2 to 3, 3 to 2, then 2 to 1. It keeps the trains in full view all the time. It works very well!

    • @yvfan
      @yvfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tony Koester used the same idea with his multi-deck layout but he had a much larger space to work with. I have only a 20x20-foot space. Great idea though...

    • @wasatchrangerailway6921
      @wasatchrangerailway6921 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jack, I understand, your layout has a lot of similarities with mine. My space is 17 x 34. I tackled this when I was much younger; before I developed MS. I used a series of reverse curves on a 4% grade--this was deliberate. I wanted to operate a mountain railroad with helpers, but when you are running 60+ cars, just putting helpers in the train any old place is a bad idea. I have had a lot of wrecks because I wasn't utilizing the math. I saw a forum on the WWW where an individual was having the same problems. He corrected it by using some algebra and calculus. Now I don't have problems. I now know exactly where to place the helpers to avoid wrecks. If anyone would like that formula, let me know, as it is fairly involved.

For you Future Lighting issue look up Flexible RGB SMD5050 150 LED Strips Kit with Remote on Amazon these LED can be adjusted for bightness and Color to match daytime (blueish) or evening (red) lighting effects. Also I would love to know what design elements to avoid and what Jack would do different a second time around? I ask cause I am currently working on a layout design and considering a multideck layout. Great Video work as always.

    • @yvfan
      @yvfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Troy…
      Thanks for the tip on the LIDs…I will certainly check them out when I lose another under-counter florescent light. Design issues to avoid…I think I mentioned some of them in the video such as not having major yards on top of each other, ensuring that you can see and assess yard tracks on one deck when there is another deck above it, and making sure that you can clean and maintain all of the track on lower decks.
      What would I do different? That is an interesting question that I have never thought about. It would be nice to have a bigger space so that the aisle next to Bagby and the area around Merced Falls could be larger. But I am glad that I made the space next to Merced as large as I did since it provides a real feeling of openness. If I didn’t have my shop in the same space as the layout when I started, I might have been able to eliminate the duck-under. That duck-under is a real minus.

    Do you have any plans for your helix that someone can use? I just got into model rail roads and there is so much to learn---all i know is that I want to have a train that runs through mountains on opposite ends whereby the train will eventually change directions, I have about 45 linear feet to work with and one wall to go through that will act as a tunnel.

    • @yvfan
      @yvfan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes...switching at the beginning and ending of a section takes maybe 10 actual minutes...the rest of the section involves following your train around the layout and dropping off cars and picking up cars. I don't have attendees who just build trains...all four crew members are train engineers. I also don't have room in the layout room for bar stools.
