      I'm lucky to live in an area that has a lot of very excellent modelers. Not only are they excellent modelers but they're also great folks who want to share knowledge. One of the panelists from yesterday's TSG Live Crew Lounge show ( th-cam.com/video/0Pi0arnbj0E/w-d-xo.html ) described Jack as having "no secrets." This series is a great example of that.

    Spirals/easements: You missed one of the main reasons for spirals. Easements as they are called connect with tangent tracks so that there is no discontinuity in centripetal acceleration. Centripetal acceleration times car/loco mass produces a sideways (radial) force. If a tangent mates with a circle, at the point they come together, there is a discontinuity in the radial (centripetal) acceleration. A tangent has an infinite radius of curvature, while a circle (or most curves) has a finite radius of curvature. This creates a radial "jerk" that is felt by an instantaneous sideways force...to be avoided as it could be large. Easements are curves whose radius of curvature at their attachment point to a straight line is infinite...thus no sideways jerk. The curve of an easement can be written mathematically as a 4th degree polynomial, and that can be plotted on paper and on your layout to mate seamlessly with any tangent.

    • @tsgmultimedia
      @tsgmultimedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is great information! In HO scale, however, no one is too worried about the physics of equipment that weighs dozens of tons. The correct answer for this program is that the scaled down curves look more realistic by using this technique.

    • @walshrd
      @walshrd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tsgmultimedia However, it's the appearance that counts on model railroads. The discontinuity in centripetal acceleration in dynamics causes a "jerk" (time rate of change of acceleration) which becomes evident if you watch your cars transitioning from a straight line to a circle. You will see a slight lurch in every car making the turn. Do you want that? Non-circular transitions will eliminate this, and these transitions do not have to be all that close to an exact easement curve. An "eyeball determined" easement is completely enough to eliminate any visible jerk.

    The Hepa filter helped with scenery cleaning, but did it make track cleaning less frequent?

    • @yvfan
      @yvfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely...but I don't operate my layout and only clean track every two years before an invitational Op Event here in the Bay Area. But I do recall operating a train over a portion of the layout for a visitor a couple of months after an operating session and I didn't have any contact problems. Jack

    Isn't a Spiral curve the same as an easement?

    Your videos have sucked me in as well, great work and great attention to detail, your layout is, to me, the best one ever, great research, everything is great. There is one thing I really don´t get, it is how little you run or use or operate your layout, I think I heard you say you don´t operate your layout but hold an operations session once every other year, why so little time? My layout is no where near the same planet that yours is but I use it almost everyday and we hold operations sessions almost once every month. I know you said operations is not your thing but still, why so little time?

    • @tsgmultimedia
      @tsgmultimedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Victor: I think you answered your own question when you said, "I know you said operations is not your thing."

    • @victorrojas8798
      @victorrojas8798 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tsgmultimedia yes, I know, but them, may I ask: What does mister Burgess does with this great railroad the rest of the time? I mean, to take 30 years plus to build something this great just because he could, I just don't get it, does he even railfan it? Thanks for replying so fast, I have just learned about your channel and I can't get enough, every video I have seen is really really great, the layout tours specially, but everything I have really enjoyed, keep it up. Cheers.

    • @tsgmultimedia
      @tsgmultimedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@victorrojas8798 Thanks very much for the compliments, Victor. One thing I can tell you is that Jack loves to share the layout with other people so they can enjoy it.
      I have seen it operated on twice for videos we did - one was about operating sessions on the YV. You can find the video we made about that session if you search for it on my channel. Jack also ran trains on the layout for the Layout Tour video which can also be found on this channel; but that's about it.
      I think the short answer to your question could be the original answer. Jack is a builder, he likes to build things. This layout is a museum quality exhibit. If it were operated on all the time, it's likely that a lot of the fine details would get damaged in the process.

    • @victorrojas8798
      @victorrojas8798 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tsgmultimedia Yes, I understand that, just like those who have a very valuable car as a Ferrari GTO, they don't drive it because it will lose value.
      Thanks again, I have already senn both videos and then some other, great all of them.

    • @yvfan
      @yvfan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Victor...Let me summarize. Yes, building is what I like to do. While I was building the layout, I enjoyed all aspects of that effort...benchwork, handlaying track, scenery, even wiring. I also enjoyed scratchbuilding the 100+ structures for the layout and, for a while I enjoyed running trains as part of some informal operating sessions. But I have found that I don't really enjoy just running a train around...there is no challenge. For me, there is no longer a challenge participating in a formal operating session either. Instead l like the challenge of drawing plans for a real structure or piece of equipment and then scratchbuilding it. See Episode 11 for my current project.
      I do enjoy sharing my layout with other model railroaders. Keep in mind that the layout will be open for tours during the 2021 National Model Railroad Association Convention in nearby Santa Clara. I was open for the 2000 NMRA Convention in 2000 and had over 600 visitors see the layout. You don't need to be a NMRA member to attend one of these conventions.
