I only dyed my part too, but only applied dye to the actual part line--therefore the amount of hair being dyed was much less. As it grew out, the thin layer of dyed hair parted very easily allowing the silver underneath to show through like "streaks". Worked out very nicely. I am now left with very little left at the tips of the thin top layer of my hair!

I like what you did just doing the part.. I have a question please. Once it all the gray is grown out how do you handle the little strip of hair you colored? Does it blend in easily to just stop coloring . I have black hair naturally and I'm loving this idea to go gray but wondering how to stop the touch up on part once gray is grown out with out it looking bad.
@G I have a lot of videos showing each month how it looked and what I did. There was a time when I flipped the part and I also got a short Bob to help the process of growing out the gray. All of my videos are numbered and start with "Growing Gray Naturally #5" or whatever I number. I have 50 total videos! Some of the earlier ones will help you see how I handled the part. Videos 3-8 are probably the best regarding the answer to your question. Wishing you all the best on your journey to silver!
That is a very good idea! I've been doing it for 4 months and gave up, and I hope that my experience will help somebody. a) one should prepare him/herself to the very limited hair styling options at the beginning. It was impossible to do my favourite ponytail, and it felt so bad. b) the dye color should match the natural color in terms of "lightness". Surprisingly mine happened to be 2 shades lighter than the dye color, so the difference was obvious. When I did the low ponytail, the lighter parts were very visible, and darker section could barely cover it. It also created the hair thinning effect. But I will try to apply this strategy again. I have been gradually selecting lighter and lighter level of dye for a year. So I have matched it with the natrual level, and now I am more ready for the limited choice. Wish me luck!
I think a French plait might be better than a ponytail, it looks kinda cool with the streaking effect, a ponytail is just showing a root line, imo anyway.. If I do a ponytail (prefer a bun) I at least plait the sides, sometimes it can look a bit old fashioned (on me anyway, because I have thin hair) other times it's ok.. As with this process though, I'm still so up and down! One or two ppl I follow on instagram have disappeared, I'm assuming they've dyed it instead, but honestly I'd like to know.. Not that it's any of my business, but its real life, its not for everyone, or just not the right time, and that's OK. I'm borderline ready to dye it! I'm so used to the warm colour, not this cool tone colour that's coming in. I've had warm tones for 25yrs, despite hairdressers telling me it's the wrong tone for my skin, I really disagree. I feel it warms me up, makes me look more alive. I've really rambled on there! My apologies! X

Wow, hello, thank you, I've been doing this, I've been only colouring my front crown for a while now, just using a small amount of my normal box dye, you can mix a small amount at a time, and you can use it again on regrowth, it does last week's even though they say it won't. The effect is you look polished and the same from the front but silver magic is happening from behind. I'm 58 its time and I'm excited for change. I have binge watched going grey on internet and you are the first that thinks on doing it the way i wanted to do it . Thanks for sharing xxx

Great! I had grew out my grays, but I looked so old ;) I am 48 years... so I have dyed my hair again, but it is a lot of work , I have to dye it every 3 weeks, just now I am growing long hair.... when I want it gray again, I dye my hair dark brown and I am going to grow out my gray hair this way!!
I am going to try this... I am tired of dying my hair every 2 to 3 weeks, it's tiring and expensive, and I'm just done with it. I hope this works because I am so scared of bleaching my hair, my hair is thin and pretty processed from all of the dying. Thanks for sharing.

So you can color your crown and grow out the sides OR another option is to grow out one side by dying a deep side part so when you part in the middle the dyed is covering both sides. Then when the grey grows out flip and work on the other side. This is for more of a subtle look but would take longer.
I have dark brown hair that I’ve been covering with permanent box dye and I’m done wrecking my hair. I want to grow the grey out before I have a harsh grey to dark brown line. So far I have speckled greys coming in so I think I need to make the change now. I’m definitely interested in trying this technique.
Hello Suzan, thank you for the detailed explanation of how this works. All the videos I have seen with this method so far have been for women with longish straight hair. What if one's hair is a bit shorter and not so straight. Mine is like that and I have it cut in a layers plus I have bangs. Wonder if that method works as well. Thanks again!
I'm guessing that this will help to at least get you past the most unsightly stages. Once your hair grows out a bit, it will probably be very hard to keep the gray covered with a small section of colored hair. If you try it, I would be very interested in hearing about your experience. :)

Hi Ava, Thank you for your kind comments! Just keep coloring the regrowth in that section until your hair looks ombre-ish everywhere else. When you begin to part your hair on the other side, your natural hair should cover the part you have been coloring. As for wearing your hair up, if you plan to wear your hair down once the gray grows out, you might try coloring a small section around your hairline rather than coloring a strip on top. This would only work if you pull your hair straight back and your hair is good and thick. Then when you let your hair down, your natural color would cover most of the colored hair I hope this helps. :)

Hi Desiree, For the gray in back-- If you take the dyed strip well into the crown area, you can give yourself a crown-bump and distribute the hair back there to cover the gray. For the bangs-- If you have a fringe-type bang, you might try distributing the dyed portion the best you can and tucking the gray portion under the longer hair on the sides of your head. For the sides--Personally, I have dyed the hair on the sides just in the ear area, and that works, but I prefer to let that area go gray for the following reason: Once your gray gets several inches long, you can tuck the colored ends under, and the gray from the top of your head reaches the gray in front of your ears, and it looks like your gray is twice as long as it really is. There's a part of me that thinks this is ridiculous, the rest thinks it's genius! Lol I'm so torn over this process, even my child keeps looking at my hair and asking me what I'm going to do about it.. I just don't know. I wish I'd started in lockdown.. But I didn't, instead I went into a blind panic because all the hair dyes were selling out, and I just continued dying it.. Even though I wasn't going anywhere - What if the postman knocked.. What about taking my bins out.. Collecting groceries.. If my neighbours saw me as I cut the grass.. So stupid. And yet I went out the other day with my white roots and felt so old and uncomfortable all of a sudden! I realise I turned down going somewhere just incase someone saw me, and I just didn't feel right in my own skin.. That can't carry on, yet when I sprayed over some root cover I just felt fake! My old medium brown golden roots just don't seem to match my face anymore either! I'm just torn. How can I feel so uncomfortable with my white roots, yet going back feels wrong as well.. Getting dressed even feels different, harder..nothing looks right, colours that suited are now off, my reflection when outside looks washed out. I'm only 40 but all of a sudden I've put myself in this weird position where I don't know what to do for the best. I think the biggest part of me wants to just see what it's like, the rest is scared of committing to it. I tried once or twice before, once around 7 years ago, again 2 years ago.. I went through the same thing, just feeling old with those roots. I can't imagine it getting any better? I want to be free from the dye, but it does add more work elsewhere... Dressing better to look more put together, like the hair is intentional and not a sign I've given up.. More classic styles, less my kind of casual as I do look older.. Worrying about heat styling turning my white hair yellow.. More makeup so I don't look washed out or ill! Honestly, I feel like the only one doing this who isn't in the right, positive mindset.. If you take your stripe of color into the crown section, you may be able to give yourself a crown bump distributing the hair in that area to cover the gray. This works for me but I'm not completely gray in the back so you might just try it and see if it works for you.
What if you can do partial highlights on the top, and the rest of the hair do not touch anymore. New growing gray hair will be close to highlights, so the top will always covered up until your hair is growing. Only one visit to the hair salon. I mean if someone want to stop coloring, a be silver gray girl
I love this idea, but I am very grey in my widow's peak. The strip technique will work for other parts, but am I just stuck growing the widow's peak out or possibly trying demi permanent to soften that line?
This idea is nice. have tried it tho when your hair around the sides of your head moves which it will naturally, the line that is meant to be hidden is then revealed !

Thanks for your question. You should be able to continue with whatever product you have been using. I used permanent hair color. When you change your part back to the original side, it should cover the dyed strip.
This is exactly what I was thinking of doing myself, so thank you for giving me the moral support to try this! However, I was going to do the dye strip on both sides of my right side part. Why do you recommend placing the dye strip on the opposite side of the normally used parting side? :)

You can continue coloring your part in your favorite place, but when you decide to show the gray you've grown out, your hair will be parted in a place you don't like best. I figured that time wise, I would have less time with my hair parted on the "wrong" side if I started the process with my hair parted there.
After a few months, I like to start checking my original part to see how things are looking. As soon as I like the way the colored hair is blending with the gray, I leave my part there and stop coloring the strip. For me, it takes about 6 months, but it might be shorter or longer for you depending on your hair color and your preferences.
Suzan Barnes 1 minute ago I used permanent or demi-permanent. If semi-permanent works for you, I would use it because then you wouldn't have to worry about hiding the colored strip when you change your part to the original side.
Wonderful idea! But, any thoughts on how to deal with grey temples? I don't want to use permanent color since I've been doing an overall color with demis for the past 2 years in hopes that I can wash and fade it out, but that doesn't seem likely. ugh.
Thanks for your question, Erika. I suppose you could do an inch around your hairline from ear to ear. If your hair is thick enough, it would hide what's underneath. At some point, though, you would have to wear your hair so it covers your hairline while it grows out. I wish that demi-permanent hair color really did wash out. Unfortunately, it must be grown out just like permanent color. The main difference is that permanent color removes some of your natural hair color before depositing the new color, and demi mainly deposits color on top of your natural color. So demi doesn't do as much damage to the hair shaft. It also doesn't cover gray as well. It has more of a blending affect. The only lasting color I am aware of that seems to eventually wash out is Adore. Though I'm not sure how well it will cover gray. I hope this helps.
Several years ago, I let my temples grow out grey. It was so easy. Until it gets a certain length, you can just put that little inside strip behind your ears under your hair. It looks awesome and I have gotten many compliments on it! Now I am dealing with this demarcation part growout. Very happy to have found this!

Thanks for your comment! Yes, follow the same procedure each time you have gray roots. When your gray gets long enough on the rest of your scalp, you can part your hair on the other side and comb the gray over the colored section. If your hair is of at least average thickness, it should cover the colored section. At that point, you can stop coloring the small section and let the gray grow out because it will be hidden under the gray hair. Hope this helps. 😊
Thank you for your sweet comment! I don't know the name of my hairstyle, but I will do what I can to help you to get that style. The cut is a basic layered cut with the shortest layer at about chin length. For me that is about 9" to 9 1/2" when I hold the layers straight up toward the ceiling. I style it as follows using large heat rollers about 1 1/2 " in diameter. (Link below.) I place one at the crown going backward and two down the back going downward. One center top going sideways (over-direct your hair before rolling to get the curl closer to your scalp and give your hair a bit more lift). One on each side behind my ears going downward and one on each side in front of my ears also going downward. That is 8 rollers total. Where I have only one roller to a side, I direct all the hair up high so the roller sits near the top at the curve of my head. If your hair is not long enough to reach, you may have to either place the roller lower or use an additional roller or curling iron to catch the hair at the bottom. The longer you leave the rollers in, the more curl you will get. I usually leave them in long enough to get a good bend, but not really curly. Of course, it all depends on how your hair takes a curl. You will have to experiment. Take the rollers out, turn your head upside-down, and shake your fingers through your hair to separate the curls then style as desired. Whenever you color hair, it warms up as it fades. I don't like the warm tones against the gray, so I just wear it ombre. Once the gray reaches an attractive proportion of the entire length, you can start wearing your part on the other side. Good luck!
Question: if you shampoo the section you just dyed then won’t all the dye wash out ? I mean when you dye your whole head or your roots you’re instructed to rinse and condition, not shampoo it out. I’m puzzled now. 2) Do you dye just the root area of the section or the whole section? Thank you in advance
Thank you for your questions. If you are using permanent or demi-permanent hair color, it will not wash out. Personally, I always use shampoo, but whatever method you normally use when you color your hair should work fine. Regarding whether or not to color the whole hair shaft, I have done it both ways. I usually do just the regrowth though, because the middle shaft and ends match the rest of my previously colored hair. While the newly colored regrowth will be darker, it looks natural because the part area is naturally darker as it is undamaged and more shaded from light. I hope this helps. :)

Thanks for your question. :) You would want to color the section at about the same intervals as you always have done. But its fairly fast because you are only coloring that small section, and when the rest of your hair has grown out enough to change your part back to the original side, your hair coloring days or over. :-D

Thanks for your question! 😊This method can work on very long hair as long as you are okay with the ombre look. After several months, you can change your part to the original side, and the line of demarcation will have become blurred. If you think your colored hair will blend and not clash with your natural hair color, then you should be good.

You may be able to distribute the colored section for see-through bangs, and hide the graying bangs under longer hair. I like to part my hair in a different place to start. As soon as your gray is long enough to look ombre-ish, you can have your preferred part placement again.
Thanks for asking. 😊 You could take a little more of the crown section when you apply color. Then back- comb your hair and wear a crown bump distributing the hair to cover. It probably won't work once the regrowth reaches more than a few inches, but it might help in the beginning.
I would like to try this. I however do not wear my hair down all the time; I also wear it in a high ponytail for sports. I don't mind the back having a different colour, but from the front it will look very strange with that strip of colour and the grey roots. Do you have any idea's on how to handle this?
You might try continuing to color an inch or so around your hairline. I haven't tried it, so I can't say if it would work or not, but it seems like it might help ease the transition. ❤
Hi Suzan, this video is the first one that has made me feel comfortable about a way to transition to gray hair. Quick question if you are still replying to comments. At the end you mention shampooing your hair. The color that I use always tells me to rinse my hair but not wash it for 24 hours. Do I follow that direction or is it important to this method that I shampoo right after coloring?

Great! I had grew out my grays, but I looked so old ;) I am 48 years... so I have dyed my hair again, but it is a lot of work , I have to dye it every 3 weeks, just now I am growing long hair.... when I want it gray again, I dye my hair dark brown and I am going to grow out my gray hair this way!!

So you can color your crown and grow out the sides OR another option is to grow out one side by dying a deep side part so when you part in the middle the dyed is covering both sides. Then when the grey grows out flip and work on the other side. This is for more of a subtle look but would take longer.

I have dark brown hair that I’ve been covering with permanent box dye and I’m done wrecking my hair. I want to grow the grey out before I have a harsh grey to dark brown line. So far I have speckled greys coming in so I think I need to make the change now. I’m definitely interested in trying this technique.

What if one's hair is a bit shorter and not so straight. Mine is like that and I have it cut in a layers plus I have bangs. Wonder if that method works as well. Thanks again!

I'm guessing that this will help to at least get you past the most unsightly stages. Once your hair grows out a bit, it will probably be very hard to keep the gray covered with a small section of colored hair. If you try it, I would be very interested in hearing about your experience. :)

Also, I always wear my hair up, because it is not in a good condition... thinning) but I don't want to cut it. Thank you for your kind comments! Just keep coloring the regrowth in that section until your hair looks ombre-ish everywhere else. When you begin to part your hair on the other side, your natural hair should cover the part you have been coloring. As for wearing your hair up, if you plan to wear your hair down once the gray grows out, you might try coloring a small section around your hairline rather than coloring a strip on top. This would only work if you pull your hair straight back and your hair is good and thick. Then when you let your hair down, your natural color would cover most of the colored hair I hope this helps. :)

Hi Desiree, For the gray in back-- If you take the dyed strip well into the crown area, you can give yourself a crown-bump and distribute the hair back there to cover the gray. For the bangs-- If you have a fringe-type bang, you might try distributing the dyed portion the best you can and tucking the gray portion under the longer hair on the sides of your head. For the sides--Personally, I have dyed the hair on the sides just in the ear area, and that works, but I prefer to let that area go gray for the following reason: Once your gray gets several inches long, you can tuck the colored ends under, and the gray from the top of your head reaches the gray in front of your ears, and it looks like your gray is twice as long as it really is. I'm so torn over this process, even my child keeps looking at my hair and asking me what I'm going to do about it.. I just don't know.
I wish I'd started in lockdown.. But I didn't, instead I went into a blind panic because all the hair dyes were selling out, and I just continued dying it.. Even though I wasn't going anywhere - What if the postman knocked.. What about taking my bins out.. Collecting groceries.. If my neighbours saw me as I cut the grass.. So stupid. And yet I went out the other day with my white roots and felt so old and uncomfortable all of a sudden! I realise I turned down going somewhere just incase someone saw me, and I just didn't feel right in my own skin.. That can't carry on, yet when I sprayed over some root cover I just felt fake! My old medium brown golden roots just don't seem to match my face anymore either! I'm just torn. How can I feel so uncomfortable with my white roots, yet going back feels wrong as well.. Getting dressed even feels different, harder..nothing looks right, colours that suited are now off, my reflection when outside looks washed out. I'm only 40 but all of a sudden I've put myself in this weird position where I don't know what to do for the best. I think the biggest part of me wants to just see what it's like, the rest is scared of committing to it. I tried once or twice before, once around 7 years ago, again 2 years ago.. I went through the same thing, just feeling old with those roots. I can't imagine it getting any better?
I want to be free from the dye, but it does add more work elsewhere... Dressing better to look more put together, like the hair is intentional and not a sign I've given up.. More classic styles, less my kind of casual as I do look older.. Worrying about heat styling turning my white hair yellow.. More makeup so I don't look washed out or ill! Honestly, I feel like the only one doing this who isn't in the right, positive mindset.. I've been so up and down lately its crazy!

Semi permanent color should work, but you would have to do it more often as it washes out quickly.

If you take your stripe of color into the crown section, you may be able to give yourself a crown bump distributing the hair in that area to cover the gray. This works for me but I'm not completely gray in the back so you might just try it and see if it works for you.
What if you can do partial highlights on the top, and the rest of the hair do not touch anymore. New growing gray hair will be close to highlights, so the top will always covered up until your hair is growing. Only one visit to the hair salon. I mean if someone want to stop coloring, a be silver gray girl

I love this idea, but I am very grey in my widow's peak. The strip technique will work for other parts, but am I just stuck growing the widow's peak out or possibly trying demi permanent to soften that line?

This idea is nice. have tried it tho when your hair around the sides of your head moves which it will naturally, the line that is meant to be hidden is then revealed !

Thanks for your question. You should be able to continue with whatever product you have been using. I used permanent hair color. When you change your part back to the original side, it should cover the dyed strip.
Quick question to a great idea. What do you do with the dark part once you decide to go fully gray?
When you part your hair on the original side, the hair you flip over covers the dyed hair.

This is exactly what I was thinking of doing myself, so thank you for giving me the moral support to try this! However, I was going to do the dye strip on both sides of my right side part. Why do you recommend placing the dye strip on the opposite side of the normally used parting side? :)

You can continue coloring your part in your favorite place, but when you decide to show the gray you've grown out, your hair will be parted in a place you don't like best. I figured that time wise, I would have less time with my hair parted on the "wrong" side if I started the process with my hair parted there.

That was really helpful, but still not sure when you stop dyeing the top section . Probably have to watch it again.
After a few months, I like to start checking my original part to see how things are looking. As soon as I like the way the colored hair is blending with the gray, I leave my part there and stop coloring the strip. For me, it takes about 6 months, but it might be shorter or longer for you depending on your hair color and your preferences.

I used permanent or demi-permanent. If semi-permanent works for you, I would use it because then you wouldn't have to worry about hiding the colored strip when you change your part to the original side.
Wonderful idea! But, any thoughts on how to deal with grey temples? I don't want to use permanent color since I've been doing an overall color with demis for the past 2 years in hopes that I can wash and fade it out, but that doesn't seem likely. ugh.
Thanks for your question, Erika. I suppose you could do an inch around your hairline from ear to ear. If your hair is thick enough, it would hide what's underneath. At some point, though, you would have to wear your hair so it covers your hairline while it grows out. I wish that demi-permanent hair color really did wash out. Unfortunately, it must be grown out just like permanent color. The main difference is that permanent color removes some of your natural hair color before depositing the new color, and demi mainly deposits color on top of your natural color. So demi doesn't do as much damage to the hair shaft. It also doesn't cover gray as well. It has more of a blending affect. The only lasting color I am aware of that seems to eventually wash out is Adore. Though I'm not sure how well it will cover gray. I hope this helps.

Several years ago, I let my temples grow out grey. It was so easy. Until it gets a certain length, you can just put that little inside strip behind your ears under your hair. It looks awesome and I have gotten many compliments on it! Now I am dealing with this demarcation part growout. Very happy to have found this!

Hi Suzan, great video. I tried the coloring a section of my hair and it worked. I love it; however, once the gray roots come in do I follow the same process each time? Finally when the rest of my hair is all gray, what happens to the section I’ve been coloring?
Thanks for your comment! Yes, follow the same procedure each time you have gray roots. When your gray gets long enough on the rest of your scalp, you can part your hair on the other side and comb the gray over the colored section. If your hair is of at least average thickness, it should cover the colored section.
At that point, you can stop coloring the small section and let the gray grow out because it will be hidden under the gray hair. Hope this helps. 😊
What is your hair style called? I love it and have been trying to explain it to my different hairstylists for many years with minimal results.
Thank you for your sweet comment! I don't know the name of my hairstyle, but I will do what I can to help you to get that style. The cut is a basic layered cut with the shortest layer at about chin length. For me that is about 9" to 9 1/2" when I hold the layers straight up toward the ceiling. I style it as follows using large heat rollers about 1 1/2 " in diameter. (Link below.)
I place one at the crown going backward and two down the back going downward. One center top going sideways (over-direct your hair before rolling to get the curl closer to your scalp and give your hair a bit more lift). One on each side behind my ears going downward and one on each side in front of my ears also going downward. That is 8 rollers total. Where I have only one roller to a side, I direct all the hair up high so the roller sits near the top at the curve of my head. If your hair is not long enough to reach, you may have to either place the roller lower or use an additional roller or curling iron to catch the hair at the bottom. The longer you leave the rollers in, the more curl you will get. I usually leave them in long enough to get a good bend, but not really curly. Of course, it all depends on how your hair takes a curl. You will have to experiment. Take the rollers out, turn your head upside-down, and shake your fingers through your hair to separate the curls then style as desired. I hope this is helpful

Whenever you color hair, it warms up as it fades. I don't like the warm tones against the gray, so I just wear it ombre. Once the gray reaches an attractive proportion of the entire length, you can start wearing your part on the other side. Good luck!

Question: if you shampoo the section you just dyed then won’t all the dye wash out ? I mean when you dye your whole head or your roots you’re instructed to rinse and condition, not shampoo it out. I’m puzzled now.

Thank you for your questions. If you are using permanent or demi-permanent hair color, it will not wash out. Personally, I always use shampoo, but whatever method you normally use when you color your hair should work fine. Regarding whether or not to color the whole hair shaft, I have done it both ways. I usually do just the regrowth though, because the middle shaft and ends match the rest of my previously colored hair. While the newly colored regrowth will be darker, it looks natural because the part area is naturally darker as it is undamaged and more shaded from light. I hope this helps. :)

Thanks for your question. :) You would want to color the section at about the same intervals as you always have done. But its fairly fast because you are only coloring that small section, and when the rest of your hair has grown out enough to change your part back to the original side, your hair coloring days or over. :-D

Thanks for your question! 😊This method can work on very long hair as long as you are okay with the ombre look. After several months, you can change your part to the original side, and the line of demarcation will have become blurred. If you think your colored hair will blend and not clash with your natural hair color, then you should be good.

You may be able to distribute the colored section for see-through bangs, and hide the graying bangs under longer hair. I like to part my hair in a different place to start. As soon as your gray is long enough to look ombre-ish, you can have your preferred part placement again.

Thanks for asking. 😊 You could take a little more of the crown section when you apply color. Then back- comb your hair and wear a crown bump distributing the hair to cover. It probably won't work once the regrowth reaches more than a few inches, but it might help in the beginning.
I would like to try this. I however do not wear my hair down all the time; I also wear it in a high ponytail for sports. I don't mind the back having a different colour, but from the front it will look very strange with that strip of colour and the grey roots.
Do you have any idea's on how to handle this?
You might try continuing to color an inch or so around your hairline. I haven't tried it, so I can't say if it would work or not, but it seems like it might help ease the transition. ❤
I use a scarf size wrap around cloth over my ponytail.
Hi Suzan, this video is the first one that has made me feel comfortable about a way to transition to gray hair. Quick question if you are still replying to comments. At the end you mention shampooing your hair. The color that I use always tells me to rinse my hair but not wash it for 24 hours. Do I follow that direction or is it important to this method that I shampoo right after coloring?
