How is it more people aren't familiar with Jimmie Dale Gilmore? He has a distinctive beautiful voice and writes great songs.....good singer, good backup and good looking!
Ah! At last! Three years ago I looked on TH-cam for Jimmie Dale Gilmore's version of Ripple, to share with a friend. It wasn't there . . . looked again just now and it is . . . thank you!
I wouldn't have believed it possible, but after hearing Gilmore's version I feel the Grateful Dead's musical mastery actually detracts from the gravitas of this special song.
+Donal Callum There's one guy (sorry, Bob) in the core band that can't be said to be one of the best on his instrument. Jerry, Phil, either drummer? Top 5% of classic rock musicians.
Greetings from East Texas Bud ....... Life is good here in 2018 despite all the political drama.. Trust Me, the American People will right the boat.........I pray for you and your land too. Peace....... and I second your motion !
Have you heard his version of Jesse Winchester's song, "Defying Gravity"? It is gorgeous! I love both versions, both men have such uniquely beautiful voices.
AWESOME. One wonderful voice. I come here to listen to Jimmy Dale Gilmore about once a month to just "calm down"; its his voice; just stunning; none other like it. Hope to see him in person one day, soon, hoping. ..... eeh
~A true mystery from my life maybe 12 years ago---I 'heard' jimmy dale's voice in my head singing this tune, never having heard such im sure, then happily discovering it on disc afterward
What a wonderful rendition. As for whether or not it's "better" - I doubt a true artist sets out to "better" someone. I think it is rather a case of creating a different version - one that speaks of the artist themselves. And in that case, both are equal.
Well I love Jimmy, unique voice! The slide is gorgeous and the instrumentation 'cleaner'? Phil's bass and the harmony arrangements, along with Jerry singing at his best makes me certain if I had only one version for the rest of my life it would be Dead hands down ;)
AJ Lee is by far my favorite performer of this song, I have been a Dead fan of this since day one but she took it to another level. I think she will go far.
For me personally, the the Grateful Dead version is better. Then again, I'm a Dead Head so what would you expect. Nice version though! I'm sure Jerry smiled when he heard it!
this is great: certainly not better than original (kind of silly, kids). of course, he isn't trying to be better; he's using the song to speak to his audience.
Jimmie Dale Gilmore says Mark it 8 Big Lebowski
One of the best songs ever written!!!
Jimmies voice is so perfect for this song!!!!
this is the version i want played at my funeral. his voice is so haunting
Great idea. I'm making the same request for my big day. His voice sounds like it's from the past.
My thoughts exactly.💜
Last song on My Grave should be you got to go to sleep alone
What happened it's kind of music people what happened you just kind of bands
Samuel your comment makes no sense 😂
How is it more people aren't familiar with Jimmie Dale Gilmore? He has a distinctive beautiful voice and writes great songs.....good singer, good backup and good looking!
Also, he appeared in the movie, "The Big Lebowski"!
Jimmie is a beautiful man in every way possible.
LOVE JIMMY DALE
When Jimmie covers a classic, he always owns it, tweaks it, re-invisions it, makes it his own.....the sign of a true artist..🙏🎼♥️🎭
Hot damn I didn’t know I could love this song any better
beautiful and I am a dead head,...
I love JIMMIE DALE GILMORE and have done for about 28 years now. Regards a true Country Music fan from England. 🏴
Jimmie Dale's version of ripple, is for me, lovely and spiritual at the same time, It's my favorite!
I must admit I lean towards Jimmie's version for the same reasons. Well said Gail. Peace!
Just one great, unique voice with a ton of 'soul' behind the person, ... just my opinion, thanks, Gene Henry.
Gail Williams my favorite too.
I ran into Jerry Garcia once... and he told me Jimmie's rendition was awesome
Jimmy can sing
Yes he did an awesome job!
Did he do it prior to this album then?..cuz jerry was long gone by 2000
I agree
Not this one! It's awful.
This is my favorite of this song. Such sincerity.
Nuff said.
Thanks for the music Jimmie. 🇬🇧🏴
Mark it a zero Smoky! Damn fine
Your over the line , Smokey !
Smokey was a conscientious objector.

A sublime version of this beautiful song. Jimmie Dale is the best.

I had heard this tune numerous times in the past, but had not really paid attention to the lyrics until recently. So moving & beautifully spiritual.

Possession of the song, WOW ! And he does make it sound so good !
Have you heard his version of Jesse Winchester's song, "Defying Gravity"? It is gorgeous! I love both versions, both men have such uniquely beautiful voices.
JDG never disappoints, alone or with Ely and Hancock. Amazing voice.
Jackie Lovell, You said a mouthful there, my friend
I saw them live in Lubbock, Texas at Dorothys bar whilst visiting the US. JDG had just released the spinning CD. A wonderful concert.
Heads up for fellow Jimmie Dale Gilmore fans, there's a new 2024 album recorded with Dave Alvin, it's called "Texicali" and it's fantastic!
This is the BEST version singer I have heard for this song.
Though I sincerely miss Jerry, I hope Jimmie sings Ripple tomorrow at Hardly Strictly. Love the tune and his rendition.
AWESOME. One wonderful voice. I come here to listen to Jimmy Dale Gilmore about once a month to just "calm down"; its his voice; just stunning; none other like it. Hope to see him in person one day, soon, hoping. ..... eeh
Yes he is unique. I was lucky enough to see him live in a small venue. He seemed like a cool dude. I really like his tune Just a wave Not the water.
Butch Hancock wrote that song - I watched the Flatlanders practically every weekend in Lubbock during the 70's. I absolutely love Jimmy;s voice!
~A true mystery from my life maybe 12 years ago---I 'heard' jimmy dale's voice in my head singing this tune, never having heard such im sure, then happily discovering it on disc afterward
Wonderful version of this great tune!😊👍🏻🎶
I love a lot of J.D.G. and Flatlanders songs. Must agree this is one of the best. I love the Dead also but never realized this is one of their songs.
From Clovis to shallow water to level land
Beautiful JDG version of this beauty. missed Jimmie by one night in Vegas a few years ago, he was The Flatlanders. Joe E and Butch H.

Well I love Jimmy, unique voice! The slide is gorgeous and the instrumentation 'cleaner'? Phil's bass and the harmony arrangements, along with Jerry singing at his best makes me certain if I had only one version for the rest of my life it would be Dead hands down ;)
Well said Johnny. If I could only have one version I would have to have both. lol
One of my favorite songs. First song my GD sang to. 💜💜
Sounds as beautiful as Robert's no greater tribute can be made.
Well thank you token, Jimmie's CD One Endless Night has many good tunes as well as Ripple. Keep on Truckin!
craig owen, i have very strong emotional connections to the Dead's version, but clearly the musicians are far better than the dead. thanks for this!!!
Your welcome vazmo. I live the Dead, but Jimmie really nailed this one. There is a road, no simple highway! Peace to you!
+vazmo14850 far, far, far, far far better

Jimmys unique voice adds to this song. It's better than the original.
MOVIE TAKEN GREAT
Rockabilly, but provocative ✌️

Still love The Dead's best, but love the instrumental in this one.
keeping it simple
This ain’t Nam Smokey 🎶
There are rules! lol
I bought his cassette but can't find him on a cd!! Sad face.
"There I marked it a zero. Are you happy you crazy fuck?"
"League game, Smokey"
I still think the best version is by 16 yr old bluegrass sensation AJ Lee. Worth checking her out, she'll be a star.
she is awesome
AJ Lee is by far my favorite performer of this song, I have been a Dead fan of this since day one but she took it to another level. I think she will go far.
For me personally, the the Grateful Dead version is better. Then again, I'm a Dead Head so what would you expect. Nice version though! I'm sure Jerry smiled when he heard it!
Looks like J D Gilmore done stole another song and made his own and ours too.
Yep.
No need to compare beautiful with beautiful. 🤔

this is great: certainly not better than original (kind of silly, kids). of course, he isn't trying to be better; he's using the song to speak to his audience.
This version is nice, but doesn't come close to Chris Hillman's....or Jerry's
Not better than the Dead.
STOP
Ripple is not by JDG. This sounds awful, just awful.
