Hi, just tried out your keyboard repair method on a non working keyboard that I have had for years with 90 percent of the keys presses not working, it works now perfectly. Thanks for showing your repair video.👍
Great clear video, I cleaned mine and works ok; although the connector is a bit unstable, as I pushed it back into place some pins moved up and made false contact leaving me with some keys unrecognized; another push and they work, it's tricky to re-seat it back into proper place.
These keyboards were designed by Mitsumi using their KKR Linear hybrid switches. It’s an odd design even for the time, it was a hybrid of a few different mechanical switch designs and of common Foam and Foil switches, the standard before rubber domes (thankfully they’ve gone away).
Nice one Glen ... I picked up so many items for next to nothing 10-15 year ago because people thought they were broke when in fact they just need a good clean a lot of the times. Game console cartridges are especially prone to this!
Yep it's amazing how many faulty items just need cleaned. Not that many bargains to be had these days though. I find most spare repairs, untested, faulty or not working items on ebay sell for nearly as much as the good parts.
Great video. I remember using pencil on the rubber contact portion of the switch to improve the connection. The graphite coating helped. Enjoyed the video while I was working on my own keyboard. Thanks for sharing this!
Some of the music in my earlier videos in ear piercingly bad. All current and future videos are music free. You do have to love a bit of Hubbard though, his commando theme is probably my favourite.
I'm in need of _one_ spring and _one_ post for a C64 (wedge, not breadbin). How can Identify the type of part that I need to get on fleebay? I think over the years there's been a few different keyboard models.
JUST the video I needed. 1. how to disassemble the keyboard and 2. how to clean it. I hope this will fix mine, because the Return and the cursor keys are not working and those I would need badly :)
Works with anything that has rubber domes. All you want to do is drag it gently a couple of times. The residue is the dirt but also the carbon. You dont want to rub it all off.
I had few keys that were working only pressing them hard, and one, the "A" not working at all. I did the cleaning, using iso, and now my "A" is fixed. But many others that were working, are now KO. :(
That's strange. Did you clean the contacts on the bottom of each plunger? You only need to rub these against the paper a few times at most. If you do it to much you'll risk rubbing off all the conductive material.
I did this all the same but used Deoxit contact cleaner. it made it worse. guess I will start over and use my 91% isopropyl alcohol. Does contact cleaner not work?
@@CRG Those are the plungers? i am really having trouble prying the keys off. I sprayed and wiped with iso since deoxit didn't dry up well. Seems like there is a little bit of corrosion preventing me from easily prying the keys off. So far only half the keys are working. I can try plugging in another keyboard from another breadbin I guess. I also have an invisible horizontal line that pulses through from top to bottom every 5 seconds or so, the video display that is. my other c64 does not have any issues on same setup. i have like 5 other c64's in the same looking condition. Looked ok when I ran a game though...
Yeah that's the plungers. Best to get yourself a key cap puller, they are only a few £ and well worth it. Get the type that are 2 metal loops then just put them under the key and pull hard. You can get them off with a screwdriver but you risk damaging the keys. As for your line I'd guess it might be an issue with the VIC2. If you have another breadbin might be worth swapping the chips over to test.
Hey there! Used your video to clean and "repair" my keyboard and wanted to show around 20 seconds or so of your video in a Video I am working on. Just wanted to check if you are ok with that. :)

Thank you for sharing this. I snapped two stems on my C64's plunger and this has been invaluable.

Love the music :) Hahaha, nice for a summer day out in the garden. Great informative video though, thanks!

Thanks for the kind words.
Nice video! I love Hubbard, but this tune is an awful pain in the ear and pure torture :-D hahaha

Lol, The keyboard generally doesn't get any abuse... Good One! Nice Tutorial, thanks!
Fantasic cant believe its that simple , would it make a even better repair if i lighly tinned all the contacts on the board bringing them up a mm
No need really just give them a good clean and it'll be fine. If they are really dirty a gentle rub with a fibreglass pen would bring them up.

Give it a go, I've brought a few back to life with a simple clean.
I have to ask, what were the various "bits and bobs" hanging out from the back of the top case? Extensive mods from a previous owner?
There used to be a reset button, composite out, audio out and svideo. I left the wires hanging as I might connect it all up again.
Nice tip to use paper to drag the keyboard contacts clean. Does this also work for the Amiga? :)

I would of thought deoxit should work but its not something I've used personally. Did you clean the carbon contacts also?

What if the keyboard doesn't have the connector? :'(
Thsnks man well done vid
