I have a Polish couple for neighbours, few weeks back I helped her back after she tripped and twisted her ankle, she kept apologising that her English wasn't great, she laughed when I said 'Your English much better than my Polish!'. Strange how some are 'afraid' of having forriners for neighbours!

Any meaningful Political commentary doesn't change because a Government has changed. The new Government needs to be held accountable. You have an agenda? Fine. Why NOT share your views? The Tories are still there and need to be challenged. Starmer is potentially in need to having a decent counterpoint to reign in his tendency to be an autocrat. All the things you mentioned about life and how things are have a value and are decent subjects too. Then we come to you simply driving around Brighton and Sussex. I love the presentation and the views out of the van windows. As an ex-Brighton resident (now living nearly 5,000 miles away), those views are wonderful. Keep it going.

I very much want the country to more further left and progressive, but to do so we all need to move the Overton window of acceptable public discourse.
Realistically that is going to take some time.

Keir Starmer, rules with an iron fist. Showed signs of it with Diane Abbott, she was just popular enough to push back, but others not so much. While things work, that iron fist is fine, great even. However! If he does something damaging, could or would anybody have the courage to challenge him, without the fear of being fired, and there will always be news. As a 63 year old woman that’s been denied the state pension until 67, disabled with many chronic illnesses, not been able to work for a long time,I should not be living in fear of what’s going to happen, to my day to day life.

Nothing is joined up, passed from doctors surgery to 2 departments I’m under at the hospital, and back again. Phone calls made, messages not picked up & much more & has taken months to get an X-ray after falling on concrete, now happening middle of this month. The appointment is at 6.20 pm & apparently I don’t “qualify” for hospital transport😮😡

I make no apologies for referring to the Tories and the right wing in general as being evil; by their deeds ye shall know them and the deeds of the Tories and the right have been, and will always be, utterly vile, almost (dare I say it..?) Subhuman in their criminal degeneracy.

Just because Labour are now in charge and haven't gone off the deep end like the Tories. Doesn't mean that they shouldn't be held to account and that everything they do is good for the country and that they always do the right thing. For example, one of the MPs that had the whip removed was threatened by having support for her domestic violence bill removed. That to me is quite frankly disturbing and disgusting. I get that they want the party line held, especially on their first vote while in power. But to threaten to pull support for a bill that helps victims of domestic violence is just wrong. All they needed to say is that they would remove the whip. There was no need for the other threat. Also this thing that i constantly hear throughout my life "you voted for them, so you agree to EVERYTHING in their manifesto" is disingenuous bullshit. Politics is nuanced and it's definitely not black and white. There has been no party where i have agreed with 100% of their manifesto and i suspect that well over 90% of the voting electorate are the same and the people that do are partisan hacks that don't actually believe in anything other than what the party tells them to

Agree with your take 100% on this, you're spot on. This isn't about if the cap is right or wrong, labour were elected on a manifesto grounded in fiscal responsibility and they clearly said they couldn't afford to lift the fap. If they had a problem they should have left the party and stood as an independent but they didn't, because then they probably wouldn't have won their seats. Labour will lift the cap when budget allows.

They were not clear as starmer made it his leadership pledge and then changed his mind. In the run up he said both getting rid of it
It must be allowed for mps to vote with conscience. Only group think and weakness requires otherwise.

There's no pressure to keep engaging with the discourse in politics and general life and social commentary stuff can be refreshing, but the benefit cap rebellion is a prime example of Starmer's pettiness to still be fighting factional wars, when the Labour left were long beyond it and just trying to coexist with the rest of the party in what used to be a broad church. You think with such a massive majority Starmer as PM would just sit back and tolerate it as that would actually be rising above adult behaviour, respecting that people can have there moral conscience stances (which in any person will be forever more important than party lines as its the bedrock of any good and free society) in a way that would be harmless to the outcome of what passes through Parliament and would show magnanimity in being tolerant of pluralist perspectives within your party and a gesture to bipartisanship in allowing cross-party legislating which Starmer's is happy to gesture at with the Tories as having common ground on issues like immigration but when it comes to the left it's always a different story with him. Instead this suspension of the whip of these 7 MPs from the Labour left reeks of insecurity as Starmer acts as someone who can't move on, so paranoid that Corbynism could come back that he actively enables it by letting the left appear to be martyred - which is frankly idiotic considering Blair allowed numerous rebellions including a letting people vote for a Lib Dem motion to the then Queen's speech as well as a rebellion as large as the one over the Iraq War. There has never been an established precedent in the Labour Party that you always *had* to vote with on the party, and on the contrary the entire whipping system, if it can be said to function at all, is contingent on tolerating a degree of dissident typically when you expect there's no real, or much chance of the rebels winning so historically Whips would let MPs have there conscious votes on measures that were highly likely to pass, so in turn on bills that had tight support MPs who were allowed to rebel previously would be more amicable to voting in favour of more controversial bills. That previously well understood system would be better than the fallacy of politics being a zero sum game, in the sense that you're either on team Starmer or you have no influence at all - when in our Parliamentary electoral system you still really vote for the party not the leader of said party. Starmer may have better stances on policy than the previous administration, but not only has this been coated in spin already but the fact that Labour haven't even put out a Minister to explain the reason for suspending the whip from these principled socialists of the Labour Party really speaks volumes of paper thin the notion that this shows there strength really is - which is already an angle that leans authoritarian, exactly the kind of politics this country needs to escape and campaigning for abolishing the whip wouldn't hurt.

Unfortunately, just because the faces change, British politics doesn't change. The only difference between the last government and previous ones was how obvious and in your face they were with their corruption. This new one seems like business as usual. All change, and no change all at once. We need PR sooner rather than later, and we need all Media owned by the people, for the people. Every party should have a set amount of cash, and not allowed any more from any source. Politicians should have only One job, serving the country, nothing else. Till all of these are implemented, the politics will never change, just the faces.
Politicians should always vote with their conscience, regardless of which party they represent, they represent their constituents, not the party.

I so concur around your thoughts on Starmer. At last someone at least grown up, being more professional and I think genuinely wants to do good and for the country, service, not like the last lot all it in for themselves like you say with all the corruption, for profiteering and greed at the expense of the majority, leeching from the poorer and the poor to the already really rich.

The people in these MPs constituencies want & need help. These MPs are standing up for them. Starmer is just showing that he is a dictator because if anyone dissents in any way then out they go ! What is the point of MP'S discussing what can be done if at the end of the day they have to toe the party line ? Might as well abandon the House of Commons in that case !!

43% of children in my consituency are in poverty (my MP is one of the rebels), so it's very understandable to me why he'd vote that way

    1) The cap is not on child benefit, it is on child support in universal credit.
    2) Labour have said they want to lift the cap, but will not do any spending that is not fully funded. (After the Liz Truss fiasco they cannot)
    3) The current government is still tied to the previous government spending guides until the next budget, when they can announce any taxes, spending changes etc.
    4) The seven rebel MPs are all far left, Corbyn supporters, not fond of Starmer.
    5) In Scotland the SNP lost ground to Labour, so it is no surprise, and probably reasonable for them to try and score points against Labour. That is the nature of the game.
    6) It was a fiasco, but if Starmer wants to maintain party discipline and not turn in to a rabble like the Tories became, he probably had no choice. It is debatable if he needed to be so severe. That was his choice. MY opinion was that he went too far,. but he was there and I was not.

Mark my words this government in no better and when you see who bank rolled KS bid, you should be very worried who is now holding power.

My, the tufton street trolls are about already. I have experienced enough politics in my lifetime to be WELL aware of the ups and downs of political happenings thanks. No, we're all quite aware that things aren't going to be sorted in no time at all.....only reform numbskulls "fink it orta be sor'ed by nah". Even you should be aware that 14 BLUDDY YEARS of austerity (for the poor) can't possibly be turned around in a few months, so come on, be realistic fer chrissake 🙄

It's NOT a cap on Child Benefit, it's a cap on Universal Credit. Two totally different things.
It's the right wing press pushing the 'Child Benefit' lie.

You still have issues to keep an eye on, such as holding the water companies to account. And smacking down any attempt by the Tories or Farage to get noticed.

The manifesto doesn't say they won't scrap it, that's the issue. 37 Labour MP's raised an amendment to scrap the cap but Lindsey Hoyle decided to chose the SNP one instead. Was it a favour to our new PM? We'll never know. I'm rather concerned, given the Gaza vote as well that the speaker is treading a bit of a dodgy line.

Next government will be Tory. This country has a heard mentality. There's not enough independ thinkers to save it and we're doomed to repeat history because of it.

Is your mission complete? NO! Like myself I think you are going through withdrawal symptoms. I open up my computer and my notification bell is reduced to 3 or 4 notifications sometimes only ONE! Having said that I don’t want them returning and they will try. Oh yes they will try. The Think Tanks situated near the media centres funded by big business, Oil Companies etc will double their efforts, we have to be vigilant. Politics is life. From the Greek for the "affairs of the cities”. (Please don’t ask two questions to comment on. Please?)
