Labour will screw over the pensioners the low paid working class who can't claim benefits and those poor bastards who worked hard to buy a home and save a bit of money. All our taxes will now go to the migrants those that Don't want to work and big pay rises for those already on a good wage and knew what they were getting before taking the job to start with.

There are loads of really wealthy people who don’t pay a penny in inheritance tax. The current Duke of Westminster didn’t pay ANY inheritance tax when he inherited the huge property inheritance from his late father. It has been estimated that if he had paid inheritance tax then the bill for the tax would have come to £9 billion. Yes I have typed 9 billion pounds! It’s not a typo error. But he didn’t pay a penny. And yet Labour, who I voted for, are targeting the most vulnerable in our society. It’s a national disgrace.

Some pensioners are quite well off ; they have no mortgage and savings or work pensions . I am managing even without a pension yet . Hopefully there will be a new policy to help people just above the poverty level . This could look at people having to pay rent . There is usually some sort of rent support for low income people generally . Once you stop wasting money given to better off pensioners ; who don't need payments the money saved can be targeted to those in need .

I am a pensioner and have both the state pension and a (small) private pension. I am certainly not rich and receive a lot less than the average UK wage but I also have less outgoings as I own my home. I can survive without the heating allowance (unless it gets really cold this winter) and am happy that the money is used somewhere else in the government's spending, provided that the pensioners that are in hardship are supported. I have written to my MP about the 2 child limit so she is aware of my views but, as a general principal, I don't think Labour are going to use the saving to fund unfair tax cuts as the Tories would and I don't think we can micro-manage the budget. There is always the argument that I could donate the allowance to charity but that is a very Tory idea and I support the state looking after those members of society that are struggling. The economy is not perfect and I fear that this is just the first of a series of hard decisions by the government but in the unfair 'first past the post' world of UK politics I cannot see any other option than Labour.

The optics are really bad. The target, the timing, the duplicity - they knew about the deficit and withheld their plan from voters. It’s also about who they HAVEN’T targeted. Tax dodgers, bankers, the ultra-rich. I won’t be receiving the fuel allowance yet, last winter, I didn’t turn the central heating on at all. Not once. Coal fire on in one room of my house, 24/7. The £500 I received, last year, paid for most of that and I will really feel the loss.

I remember talk of doubling down on the windfall tax for oil companies? Would nipping the cost from the other end mean less on the fuel bills for all? I think it is right that WFA is means tested. Why should working people who struggle to pay their energy bills pay for fuel allowance to wealthy pensioners? And btw, I know a number of well off pensioners who don't want the WFA, some give it to charity. Encouraging more pensioners to apply for Pension Credit for which they'd easily be entitled, so that they can get extra benefits like the WFA makes more sense. What Labour could do is increase the threshold for PC. Also, reduce energy costs for everyone by going after greedy energy companies.

This is actually plainly stupid - Reeves has no idea that 'this one will run and run' - no idea that it will be re-packaged and presented negatively for the next five years. I see you have predictable comments - and the thing is - that all means-testing has a threshold. The actual amount involved is £11.400 after housing expenses (Rent/Maintenance plus Council Tax) and anything less is eligible for Pension Credit. The problem lies with those just a bit higher on the income scale - who will now not only lose out on the winter fuel payment, but also free dentistry and specs. So there will actually be group who are worse off than those receiving pension credit. You've all been gaslit into thinking that all retired people get £40K per year, but it is not the case. I think that Reeves is going the right way to be the worse chancellor ever - she seems to think like Thatcher - that the Country is run like a household purse - and seems to be talking 'austerity 2' - watch her come for the disabled next !

This is means testing. Now, whether the means threshold is adequate or not is a different question and you need to write to your MP. Note also that the cost of living is different in different parts of London (Brighton is expensive - not quite as much as London, but it is clearly a wealthy area - on the other hand, if you go up to county Durham or Northumbria, it is not unreasonable). By the way, if enough people write to their MPs, they will have to worry.

As a married pensioner and house owner and I have modest bits of pension taked onto my state pension and so does my wife I guess although disappointed feel I can manage without our winter fuel. I take your point for the poorer pensioners and I suspect there are a lot if them this is the last thing they need. I support the thrust of your arguement. The problem with modern day politician's is they almost all come from comfortable backgrounds. In my day there were a good lot of labour M.P.'s that came from very poor backgrounds and moved up through the trade union structures eventually deciding to run for parliament They fought ferociously for the poor and disadvantaged. We don't have this sector of society represented any more in the top tiers of politics. These people today may have come from Oxford and Cambridge universities but have no comprehension of the struggles of the working people and poor pensioners. It's not the first place I would turn to if I wanted to rebalance the books.
