A “fold” is a section. It comes from old English “fald” meaning “stable” or “animal pen/stall”. It’s called a bi-fold because it has 2 sections or “stalls”. Similarly there’s the saying “x has increased by 2-fold” meaning it has doubled as in there are two folds/stalls for each original fold/stall
Some words have the prefix mean the quantity of the root word. Such as triangle. There are 3 angles. And that’s where I think the confusion arises. Sometimes it’s the quantity of the root, sometimes it’s the quantity of something contextually related to the root. A trifold poster board doesn’t have 3 folds in the same way that a triangle has 3 angles.
The XT's unprotected display edge is definitely a no-go for me. Users who don't baby their foldables and exert a decent level of daily wear on tear have reported the display on this breaking in matter of weeks to a few months. If I happen to pick one up at some point for well under $1000 I would only use this occasionally when traveling. Either competing brands prove that the unprotected edge & the hinge under it can be made much much more durable with acceptably protective cases to match or I might just skip trifoldables altogether and pick up a 7-to-11 inch "fold n' roll" (unfold once like current foldables then the right edge extends an additional 30-35%) in yet a couple more years with the completely protected edges.
One of the supervisors in our publically funded computational neuroscience lab actually left to join Meta AI to work on these EMG wrist bands. He visited us back after a few months to give us glimpse into what he has been doing at Meta. He told us that it is super hard to personalise these bands for a given user and that it takes several hours of data for both the user AND the model to learn to do more complicated gestures accurately. These complicated gestures include for example, typing on a keyboard, handwriting etc.. The problem is that having enough data for the given user is the only bottleneck they keep hitting for this wrist band. So having say a short calibration session when a customer buys the product would probably not be enough. So I am guessing that a accurately working wrist band tech is quite faaaar away.
I have successfully delayed the dishes until now! 😌🕺🕺🕺 In other, arguably more important news, progress has been made on my iPhone 16 3D models! 🗿💯 I am also conceptifying the 16 Mini and 16 Pro Mini. Adam’s question about bi/tri-fold is a common point of confusion in printed stuff too, so I’ll try explaining: Traditionally, the prefix part (bi/tri) refers to the number of distinct sections to a brochure, newspaper etc., with the word fold then indicating how the sections are divided. But you can also have bi and tri-panel designs that have 2 or 3 distinct sections, but on the same side. These could be sections divided by a line or similar design element. So you could have a bi-fold brochure where the front page is tri-panel.
The point of the mate xt is that it allows you to use all 3 of the displays at once. Has no one else understood this?! Samsung fold and the pixel fold and the other similar ones, all of them technically have 3 displays too, but allows you to 2 at most.
David has broken me; I can now only listen to youtube videos at 2x speed since he mentioned it several weeks ago (except for this podcast, don't worry Ellis)

arcminutes is used for space stuff constantly so if you're involved with astronomy stuff at all you use that measurement a lot, like the moon's angular diameter from us is ~31 arcminutes
I think the Orion glasses could have a "cheaper" version without the AR sensors and pinning and stuff and just projecting a square in front of you, but keeping that magic bracelet. Then you mimic the cell phone usage without tilting the head down, nor holding it. For me, that's already some magic!
And increases battery life for reducing all the sensors... By the way, speaking of battery, these companies should bring back that chain that old people used in their glasses when they put it to rest held behind the neck. Could be a power cord connected to a pendulum like battery that goes in our back... 🤔
Relating to the tri-fold/bi-fold discussion: According to Merriam-Webster, the word (that is, the noun) "fold" applies to both the crease that is created when folding as well as the two parts which are "doubled or laid over another part." To be a bit more explicit and give an example: When you fold (verb) a piece of paper, you are creating a fold (noun, the crease) in the paper that divides two folds (noun, the parts created by the act) of paper. So if you fold a phone twice, you get two folds (as in crease), but also three folds (as in parts). So in the case of the Mate XT, there's a case to be made for both looking at it as a "bi-fold" and a "tri-fold". If your alignment is chaotic evil, there is even an argument to be made for "penta-fold".
17:11 The way to describe the tri-fold is an Huawei Mate XS & XS2 combined, outward and inward folding capabilities. With Huawei and HONOR (using the blueprint of Huawei obviously) making their folds "true to size" and still thinner than Samsung is one of the reasons why I couldn't move to the US full time.

You know what, I think I could get behind a tri-fold phone, especially if they were to have similar dimensions as this Huawei one. They look more like a true tablet when unfolded and could more feasibly be a laptop replacement than current bi-folds (which would offset the cost).
NGL while they are a bit thicker, I’m surprised no one has compared them to Tony Stark’s EDITH glasses. The blue lens and semi-rainbow effect that happens over the lenses when you’re viewing/requesting info. If they get it to that point form factor wise and maybe even Glass comes back I might very well be interested because, while they’re cool the Meta Ray-Bans are not the most practical thing in terms of functionality (IMO as a daily glasses wearer)
I wonder if the wrist input device stops working if you add some random changes to your hand... For example, wearing a ring. Or when you have a minor sprain in one of your fingers, that may affect the electrical pulses to the device because there's more blood flow. I assume recalibration would be the simple fix, but it's something to think about.
The concern i see with the trifold phone is that the front is the plastic screen and always exposed. And there's not really a good way to put a screen protector on it
The quest 3 was ruined by the bad passthrough (I know it improved over time apparently), and the lack of eye tracking. Moving windows around with nothing but clunky hand tracking is a pain. Simply adding eye tracking like the PSVR2 has would've improved the experience so much. I've pre-ordered a Visor 4k because it's the first product that actually delivers (hopefully) on all of my must haves.
While I agree with the “beginning of smartphone for VR”, I think this isn’t really solving a problem that people have necessarily. For example the first iPhone was a phone iPod and computer (haha) in one. So it solved something by combining different devices people used daily. At this point I’m struggling to see what “problem” VR solves, since I don’t suddenly want to start wearing glasses to do all the things my phone does at least as good.
38:40 there is this guy making the real life iron man suit. He also made something like this. He added sensors beneath the suit which would track the moment you’re trying to do, and the suit would also move in the same way so that the weight of the suit won’t be on the person.
