🤣😂My first driving experience was on board this car. I was 15 years old at the time, and this is the year 1995. My uncle visited us at home and he left the car outside with its keys. I was able to start it and drive without my uncle noticing me. What a pleasure. Greetings from Algeria

Love this film, I am lucky enough to have a 1989 Supercinq 3 door and I love it , such a rare car these days.

I have had three Renault 5's and loved them all. My first car was a 1984 TL, I wish I could find it in a barn somewhere. I am on my second Supercinq, a rare 1986 GTL 3 door. With the 1.4 engine it is both nippy yet quiet at speed due to tall gearing. It is extremely comfortable too.

I too dreamt of the Renault 5 as a child, not only I had some of my relatives having one, but also because I used to read Spirou comics in my childhood and he had one. Eventually, when I got my driving license I bought a (used) 1982 GTL. It was a good first car.

Lucky you! We in Australia never had the privilege of the Renault 5. A few were seen here as unofficial imports, but I know of only 1 which is still 'alive'. I have heard about it, seen one photo of it, but I haven't seen it in the metal. :(

My first car was a Renault 5, second generation. It was built in 1987, and I bought it in 1994 for £850. It was my student-mobile, and had 112,000 miles on it when I sold it 5 years later.
When I lived in Rennes in north-west France, many used to double-take when seeing a right hand drive version. When I lived in Berlin a few months later, the clutch cable snapped so I had to get it repaired a Renault dealership who needed to wait for 2 weeks to get parts imported from England.
Because of its low weight, it could out-corner most other cars. With its manual choke and a cassette player, it was enormously fun to get around in.

I own one of the few Renault 5s in my province (In Canada they stopped selling here in the 80s), and I always marveled at how modern the bodylines for a 70s car. It too many more years for everyone else in the North American car market to catch up.

Thanks for putting this up....1st car I drove was the 8, the end of that previous iteration , never thought about the 5 much , but this puts it in context . It also puts the layout of the 5 in context , the 4 & 5 the 8 layout turned through 180 degrees with CV joints & then a crisp little skin.

In the 80's Sun Imports Int. was a "grey market" importer in Florida that imported the Renault R5 TURBO 2 . The homoligated Rally version with the mid-mounted engine & tube chassis . I had the opportunity to ride in a few . They were insane fast & highly collectable today .

When I first heard that the 5 was first sold in 1972, I thought 'isn't that a decade earlier than it looks?!' For a young man to envision a design like that nearly 50 years ago, it makes the Lamborghini Miura also designed by a young man of the same year, imply the best designs are from those fresh out of college!

Wonderful little car. I wish Renault will bring it back in electric form. Originally it might have been designed for youngsters but it holds appeal for all age groups over time. One thing which I find particularly appealing is the short front overhang. Wheels in all four corners of a car (with minimal overhangs) brings technical advantages as well as esthetic advantages. Oh I so want to something like this coming back:)

Bought my first 5GTL in 1978, loved it, and I'm now (2017) on my seventh - a 1988 auto 5 Monaco, called Grace of course. Gorgeous little lady, very demure, and reliable... with THREE (count'em!) forward speeds! My most loved was a '95 1.4l Campus Prima, 5-speed manual, a real brahman of a car - I could throw it around the road or racetrack with complete confidence, and it had loading and economy performance to match any of the large 'practical' estates. So sad it rusted out in every corner. If someone could start making SuperCinq body shells, there's parts enough in garages across the UK to resurrect at least a thousand Pocket Rockets!

My first car was a 1974 Renault 5GL with the gear stick in the dash. it had a huge pull back sunroof and a little 850cc engine. it was brilliant. l owned 4 more after that, up to a new one in 1994. They were really reliable and never let me down. The worst car after that was a VW Golf, it was terrible. Renault aren't the same anymore.

I have a "Super 5" GT Turbo and it's a great car, the Garret T2 turbo is a big improvement on the T1 and it's very quick and also proactical. It's my third.... Prices are shooting up too.
But the video rather embelishes the fact that it took Renault until 1984 to catch up with the Mini and have an E-W engine instead of N-S, with an odd gearlever and engine protruding into the passenger cabin. The big difference was the hatch.
Also, it might have "done well" in the Monte Carlo but the Mini Cooper did that 10 years earlier.

  • @auxmike
    @auxmike 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Sold in the USA as the “LeCar”. I had one! A rare FOUR door. It rode real soft like a Caddy. Well made. Only annoying thing is it would pop out of gear. Also, the odd “U” shaped exhaust manifold down pipe cracked, melting a lot of wires.
The starter motor is impossible to get at too.
With that said, I loved this car!

    • @blackmanxrjc
      @blackmanxrjc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@auxmike: Loved my R5 ("Le Car") glad to know yours popped out of gear too -- there was a kind ring that would pop off and leave you with minimal shifting ability, making the shifter feel more rubbery than usual :) In Quebec the R5's looked the same (US headlamps, which really ruined the front - I was able to source a set euro's and retrofit mine), but instead of the "Le Car" as part of the graphics package they had "La Cinq" ("the 5"). commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Cinq_(Renault_5_sold_in_Quebec).jpg
I seem to remember I even had the horribly ugly round single headlamps when I bought the car. Such a shame the French abandoned the US market.

A lot , clearly not all , of Americans cannot understand the allure of a great little everyman car .In the States the Renault 5 was badged " Le Car " and had minimal success due to problems in getting parts . Most of the people that bought them were the adventurous type bored with standard fare .

I think it was only sold in Canada after a certain point because the American emission standards were more stringent in the early 1980s than Canadian emission standards. Hence why the Porsche 959 was sold in Canada and not the U.S. in the early 1980s.

    • @adamdean5881

What Americans don't appreciate is over priced and unreliable cars which develop rust holes in the body in less than a year. The Renaults sold in the U.S. were pieces of sh*t on wheels. My father owned one and it was unrepairable in less than year. If Renault made and sold a worthwhile car maybe they would not have had to withdraw from the U.S. market with their tale between their legs?

i love the look of the 80's Turbo, but the only experience i've had with Renault is in videogames, with the Rally Car in this case.
so to me, they're fun to drive and they never break down, and their mileage is comparable to any other rally car.
best of all, they cost practically nothing and you don't have to live with them.

A company rep who became a family friend who used to visit here had one as a company car , then another , we liked it,s neat , clever space saving design , great fuel economy & quiet , musical engine , this prompted me to save up for a 5 TS , what more can I say .

my stamp dealer friend's daughter had one..she had trouble of some kind and somehow I had the idea to spin the fuses around and that fixed it so from then, I was a guru of the Renault 5....the nearest Renault dealer was 90 miles away.

the TS that appears with the blonde woman is already late 70´s dash but with 70´s finishings outside, mine was all black and the TX 1.4 had more power and seats like the turbo ,the first turbo´s only sold in red and metalized blue but more equiped than the regular model ,only later was released the alpine turbo because of it´s success in rally´s, i had both after the 70´s TS but at the same time had both renault alpine´s from the 70´s, a rich person in my city bought them and i kept them after he was tired of them

The only downfall i had with my Reanault % was the clutch cable assembly. It whent GY a few times, but that could have been due to sub standard materials being used
in the 1990's.Other than that it was a fantastic little car. :)

Yes, my clutch cable snapped once. Also, had to replace both drive shafts, which were noisy.

Had one. The only front wheel drive car I've driven that handled well in snow. Loved the gear stick through the dashboard - sheer brilliance. But, as with all Euro-trash cars, on a quiet night you could hear it rusting away.

It is so tragic that Renault went the front wheel drive way back then. Today and in hindsight we know that rear wheel drive, even rear engine would be much more desirable by knowledgeable drivers. None the less, the 4,5,12,16 were good cars, but the 8,10, A110 are all much more sought after today.

It was IMMENSELY MODERN for its day ánd it aged extremely well too!
Give it a few tweaks and it'll be good for another 10 years. Remember thís car came to market 2 years before GOLF 1 in 1974 did.

I had their model called ' black beauty' - black body with a fold back top, mag wheels, leather steering wheel, tach, front hood scoop and air dam below the bumper. It was a fun car but not reliable- lots of engine problems. Cooling system was the worst. Had a friend that had one too, it lasted her about 2 years.

Fact: Clio was never about purity, and has nothing to do with the 5. It is about upselling. From the first generation to the present day. Only car with the utilitarian microcar spirit in today's market is Panda. At one point there was a Renault Twingo, but they ruined it.
