    Oh, I've wanted this review so badly! I love Marmite, and I adore truffles too. Hopefully the combination works! 🤞 I completely agree, the price should reflect the ingredients, a truffle 'flavour' doesn't warrant a 100% price increase. 👎 Whack some in your next Bolognese and see how it tastes!

      You might want to try first pasta in bianco - plain pasta boiled in salted water - to which you add bit of oil and some marmite. If it ok to taste, then you can add more ingredients. In Italy truffle pasta is always white, never with tomato sauce or meat. But you can mix and match whatever you fancy

    My Dad trained with the Northern Ireland Boys in WW2 and picked up a few interesting tastes while with them one of which was Marmite. Just wondering, what was interesting about the linguistics, or at least different to what you might be familiar with from British TV shows?

    • @StuartRedman
      @StuartRedman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@capitalb5889 Mike always seems to provide, in addition to entertainment, education about words or phrases that may be commonplace in England, but perhaps uncommon elsewhere. For instance, the use of "flavour" versus "flavoured" on packaging was something I didn't know about and now I do. The differences in usage and meaning of the same words across different regions, "muffin" being one of them. I believe the word "pudding" is another which has been mentioned on this channel as well (carrying numerous meanings based on context).
      Or maybe I'm just a weird Yank with an appreciation for linguistical differences lol.

    Seems quite nice! I've just recently "discovered" Marmite, through your old comparison video, and I definitely like it, so thank you for that! Not very easy to find in shops here in Sweden (in fact, I don't think any of the bigger/well known stores carry it here... at least I haven't found any), but one jar lasts for quite a while so I'm okay with a bit of extra travelling when it's time to buy more.

    I always think making "limited edition" food stuffs is a stupid idea, because if you're fan of said product you only have the run of the product to enjoy it and then it may never grace the shelves and you're taste buds again. It's not like limited edition cds or cars, that will exist on and, ok at a price perhaps but be available to be either bought or enjoyed. Food is different, once it stops production and runs out of date, unless they make it again, you're stumped. Mars did alot LimEd chocolate bars in the past that are no longer about. I think if you're gonna make something, make it unlimited and if it sells badly, then kill the run, but don't make something foodie as Limited Edition, It's stupid...Rant over!!

    • @igotes
      @igotes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some limited edition Marmites have become collectors' items, the Guinness and Champagne ones for example. I think they may be cashing in on that by continuing to occasionally release limited editions. I prefer the XO Marmite, which is nearly a fiver a jar, but it lasts a long time and it seems it's no longer a "limited edition". That said, I haven't checked recently to see if Tesco is still stocking it.

    • @igotes
      @igotes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should also add, a lot of collectible non food items don't get enjoyed either, unless it's enjoyable enough having it on a shelf in its original packaging.

      I think sometimes the 'limited edition' foods that we see are really just public trials of potential new products - telling people that something will go away after a while is a way to (potentially) whip up a social media frenzy and that's basically free advertising.

    • @abingleyboy
      @abingleyboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AtomicShrimp maybe, but You'd think that would do the opposit of the desired effect, In that people will buy like you say in a kind of frenzy. Just tried it this morning on normal white bread toast and yes I find it ok, the truffle flavour gives it a kind of hidden depth that you don’t get with the normal marmite, in as much as there’s something else there in the taste but if I didn’t know it was truffle I wouldn’t have guest.
    You mentioned the Chilli marmite (Dynamite Chilli) that one actually is my preferred favourite, there wasn’t any on the Sainsbury’s shelves by me and that’s why I’m now giving the truffle flavour a test run.
    Thanks for a great review enjoyed it

    Love truffle, especially freshly grated, but indeed that is very expensive. Like a wee bit of marmite, every now and then, but only on toast with cheese and butter, so kind of specific. Do feel that truffle pairs excellently with both cheese and butter, so i think i might have enjoyed that muffin you just made! Probably would have left out the egg myself...
    It is hard to describe truffle but you managed quite well, with the earthy, mushroomy, garlicky taste: i do feel that garlic added to truffles, really brings out the taste even better, just like cream. Thinking about it that would not necessarily make sense, but it really does ring true, to me at least...
    The way i most enjoyed fresh truffle shavings, is on top of a very garlicky pasta, with some matured parmegiano, manchego or padano, and sometimes added panfried brown mushrooms, basil and mascarpone.
    Really love your food related content, always a pleasure: would also love to see you do some more stuff with 'fancy' ingredients such as truffles, caviar, or see you make fake versions of it :) Enjoy your day Mr. Shrimp! As always you made mine a little better.
    P.S.: i had to chuckle at that little blurb, ole chap!

    Partly thanks to your previous Marmite videos, my wife ordered me a set of Marmite jars from the UK (regular, "Chilli", and XO). Unfortunately, the XO was smashed in transit, so I only got to try one new one ... which matched your review of it. I haven't tried boosting the flavour by adding Sriracha but it's something to look forward to. Rather than trying to get that company named after a South American river to process a return/refund, she contacted the UK supplier directly and they were very helpful ... I have a replacement XO jar en route plus some other Marmite-flavoured or related umami treats. I just hope this package doesn't get the same rough handling the first one did.

    I have the same toaster under a different brand, I bought it to toast weird shaped bread where my normal 2 slot toaster wouldn't fit them width wise. The toaster I have is deep enough, but will still only hold two normal sandwich slices in width and no more, so if I want to toast two pieces of odd shaped toast at once, I have to overlap them. I didn't know it was only 1 slot when I bought it though I guess I should have figured that when I saw the window.
    The quest for an extra wide two slot toaster continues.

    Not sure if this also applies in the UK, but in the States, "truffle-flavored" items like truffle oil typically refer to products containing manufactured compounds like 2,4-Dithiapentane and have never so much as sniffed a real truffle. It was really popular a few years back for the novelty, but is now decried as "one note" and "fake" much like cheap "vanilla" extract (i.e. vanillin from wood pulp processing). I try to avoid such extreme stances - everything has its uses.
    Never made the garlic connection myself, but the immediate byproduct of allicin (garlic's primary flavor) seems to be 4,5-Dithia-1,7-dioctene, another sulfur-containing hydrocarbon. Breakdown products should be different, but maybe it's similar enough aromatically?
    Also, egg, truffle oil, and parmesan cheese (cheddar has a bit too much of its own flavor) make for an outstanding flatbread/pizza.

    Toaster manufactures take heed , The Atomic shrimps criticism of toasters is spot on ,if you could market a device that browns two standard slices of bread laid on their side ,and do that evenly, you would dominate the Toaster market.

    I rather like Marmite. Hideously expensive here in south Florida but some stores stock it for seasonal British residents.
    Lots of artificial truffle flavored oil out there. That usually has some chemical or chemicals actually found in truffles but produced synthetically, much as vanillin is found in real vanilla but is produced synthetically and serves as the mainstay of artificial vanilla extract…

    I'm wondering if you couldn't get the same effect by stirring in a little truffle oil to regular Marmite. It would be cheaper and not limited to the duration of the marketing campaign should you end up really liking it. Its like the Marmite peanut butter - it was nice but not really distinct from just putting Marmite and peanut butter onto toast.
