How to TAKE OUT STARTER MOTOR from BMW e46 N42/N46 engine

  • The silver e46 is back. Don't know for how long but I hope that it'll leave my new workshop being a better car than when it came.
    So the car I build broke down. The only thing I didn't touch meaning the starter motor died. Let's hope I'll be able to fix it myself and make a cool video out of it. Parts are already ordered so STAY TUNED!

    Hi, thanks for the video, well presented. My car do not want to start, I accidentally started my car in second gear. My battery is new, everything on the dashbaord goes on, but when I turn the key nothing no sound. Any advise?

    Wouldn't it be easier to take out the alternator and the throttle valve to have more space to reach it?

    • @gorillaprojectcar
      @gorillaprojectcar  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Instead of taking out the intake? I don’t think so. Intake has a shape that would not make it easy if doable at all. This intake is huge on the bottom

    Amazing diy video! Thanks a lot man! You save my day. By the way, do you know if the bolts/nuts that attach the intake manifold to the cylinders block need to be tighten with torque wrench and if so, which torque do i need to apply? Thanks and keep going! Amazing job

    • @gorillaprojectcar
      @gorillaprojectcar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad it helped 🙌 that’s why I make those videos. Honestly I think there is a torque spec for those bolts but I never used it. I tighten them by feel. I’ll check it quickly and let you know 😉

    • @gorillaprojectcar
      @gorillaprojectcar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok you need to check what studs are there exactly. I think they were m6. But just in case Here are other cases too:
      M8 - 22Nm
      M7 - 15Nm
      M6 - 10Nm
      Hope this helps :)

    How did you know it was the starter though ? I think my starter is also dead. Used the car, parked it, next more no crank just a click. All electronics are working, just in case I fully charged the battery but still nothing only a click. Also tried spare keys but nothing. So my guess is the starter, but is there anyway to diagnose it before removing the intake manifold ?

    • @gorillaprojectcar
      @gorillaprojectcar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So in my case it actually wasn’t the starter after all. It was engine ground. You can check it too. It’s attached to the engine mount from the exhaust side.
      If ground is fine you can check if it’s starter by directly applying power to the starter relay in the ecu box ;)

      You can hit the starter with a stick or with a rod from underneath the car while someone is starting it. I did tha just yesterday and it was indeed a bad starter.

    • @gorillaprojectcar
      @gorillaprojectcar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a good advice but I'm usually alone in workshop. Last time I did that trick was 7 years ago on excavator. There was a lot of things I could do better but starter was going bad anyways as I tried it out of the engine later. anyways it's how I learn 😉 thanks for commenting 🙌
