      Usually games are a good metric for how good a laptop is for engineering if you are going to run heavy tasks like cad programa

    • @kayanhaider50
      @kayanhaider50 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      To be fair, if it can game, it can CAD. My aunt is a proper architect and I’m studying engineering. Her whole office is all ROG laptops. I had a surface, it isn’t cutting it (there’s no dedicated gpu) so now I’m looking at the ROG surface z13 thing. Basically a surface with a gpu, it’s just really ugly and expensive.

      Gaming is pretty analogous to CAD in terms of what you need in hardware. And you can spend less on a gaming laptop that will do just as well as these "workstation" laptops in these tasks. I bought a Legion 7i for $1770, adding on 4 years of warranty to about $1850. This gave me an i9, a RTX 4070, 1TB of storage, 32GB of RAM, and a 1600p screen. More than enough for an engineering curriculum. And its covered throughout my schooling. It's solidly built with all-metal construction and a premium design. While it is a gaming laptop, it looks fairly normal in all respects except for the RGB lights in the keys (which can be set to white or turned off entirely) so it looks as if it could be in a professional environment. It nets about 5-6 hours on light tasks which is perfectly acceptable in an environment like a university with lots of outlets (should be plugging it in for intensive tasks like rendering anyways).
      The same RAM, storage, and display resolution in a Thinkpad P1 would have cost me over $700 more than what I got my Legion 7i for, and would have given me worse battery life, slower RAM, a worse CPU, and worse GPU. Likely, worse cooling as well. Oftentimes it does not make sense to get a "workstation" laptop as they will just greatly overcharge you and be overkill for your purposes (as will the gaming laptop). Ultimately both a gaming and workstation machine are built to render things.
      As for a laptop in the real Engineering workspace, you will likely get a work laptop so that choice is taken out of your hands anyways.

    Excellent points. I’ve been a long time MacOS user and it pains me to have to switch back to Windows for CAD applications. The only work around for me has been to run Windows in Parallels virtual environment or previously to configure a dual-boot Mac using Boot Camp. While these solutions can work they can also add cost to a Mac ecosystem. In the end the virtual machine seems to be the best option as long as your CAD application supports virtual environments.

Even if you install windows on Mac, the performance is not as good as Windows. I intensely tried M1 MacBook Pro for one month, and this is my conclusion. It will be a pain in your as*.

    I wish I had seen this video 3 years ago when I got my laptop. I got a gaming laptop, the Dell G7. It definitely is powerful but the battery life is awful so that means I have to lug around this gigantic charger everywhere which is frustrating. The battery life at full power is only like 1 and a half hours while doing LIGHT tasks. Very annoying. It also has this problem with the fan where it just keeps blowing randomly like it’s a passenger jet about to take off. Really embarrassing when you’re at the library. Anyways rant over but thanks for the video Anna!

    I am student in a french Engineering School and I bought an M1 MBA the year before, almost no regret of my choice : my battery life is way longer than my mates using Windows laptops and I can charge it through usb-c whereas others often have proprietary charging port (they’re in pain when they forgot their adapters). Moreover my M1 MBA is silent (low heat and no fan) and has good performances, even in a Windows VM (but not as good as M1 optimized programs). And for specific heavy softwares like CATIA, we use the desktop machines in dedicated rooms or for remote work, the school gives us an access to a VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) under windows 10 gathering all the softwares we need. But I prefer the physical desktop machines because interfaces are smoother than the one’s through vdi. But I recognize that 13 inch display can be painful for eyes when focusing on details.

    Excellent video! Is it better for mechanical engineering students to have one laptop or both a laptop and a desktop? A lot of people say laptops get very noisy when doing heavy work load and having to listen to that fan noise for hours a days feels like a pain, on the other side desktops are way quieter and more powerful?

    • @theannareich
      @theannareich  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd say a laptop is sufficient and more practical since you're likely to work both from home and uni a lot and can easily bring your work anywhere you need to. I haven't really had any issues with loud fan noises but if you're more sensitive to that and have a large budget, you can of course always get a desktop for at home. I just don't think it's necessary and you'd need to make sure to always be able to access your files from both devices.

So I would go for a decent graphics card but nothing unnecessarily good.

    Third year mech e student here. This is my second time going through this laptop search as my dell xps 15 9500 recently quit life on me for the second time. Already replaced the motherboard on the device for $300 and with it quitting again I decided I’d rather fork out the money for a new more reliable laptop rather than gamble on this one. It was only 2 years old and I’m writing to say go with a Microsoft laptop instead the xps reliability is a joke imo

    Hi Anna, I am a Mechanical Engineer. I will begin my masters studies in France on Erasmus+ Scholarship. I will hopefully be using Python, MATLAB and 3D modelling and simulation software but I have tight budget of around 750$. Which laptop do think would be good for me in this range. I have found a laptop (Dell Vostro 3520 i7 12th gen, 8gb ram, 512 SSd, 2 gb nvdia MX550 graphics card, 15.6" display with WVA technology). Please share your opinion on this laptop. Thanks.

      With dad jokes and noise cancelling headphones 😉
      But jokes aside, for work I would only consider joining teams that have other women in them. From my experience, the more balanced the team, the less gender matters and the more we can just focus on the engineering. And at school I wouldn't worry about it as long as there's a couple of other women since we tend to stick together and support each other 🙂
      And finally, even if you get told otherwise, remind yourself that you belong and that you're just as capable 🔥
