I Tumbled Extremely Rare Agates

  • In today's batch of rocks I show off some of the amazing pieces of binghamite agates I tumbled. Binghamite is an extremely rare agate found in only one locality in the entire world; The Cuyuna Iron Range of central Minnesota. One of the unique qualities of this amazing rock is the beautiful chatoyancy it displays. This is caused by fibrous iron minerals that have been replaced by chalcedony. The light is reflected through these fibers and displays as a lighter band that runs perpendicular to the fibers. The various colors are caused by different iron minerals. These rocks were kind of a challenge to tumble for a few reasons. The first is that they were very fragile, and would often crack or fracture. They also sometimes had a tendency to undercut in certain places.

I love the rich colors in your agates! Gold, bronze, and copper in that amazing chatoyancy. The textures in your close ups instantly reminded me of the textures in butterfly wings. The large agate at 13:40 seemed to have a small area of schiller. Such beautiful stones! Thank you for sharing these!

I have loved Binghamite since I first saw you finding it in your video. It's even more beautiful tumbled and polished!😍 Very cool and beautiful! I really like the ones with red, yellow, quartz and iron in them, although they are all so cool and gorgeous. The little bit of pitting isn't a big deal when your end result is that amazing. Great job on this batch and thank you for sharing it with us!✌🤠

Not quite. Tiger's eye is quartz that grows along with crocidolite fibers. Binghamite replaces the minerals with chalcedony rather than growing along with it.
