European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell drew criticism with his recent remarks where he used an analogy of a garden for Europe and a jungle for the outside world.
Speaking in Belgium at Diplomatic Academy on October 13, Borrell said "Europe is a garden, but most of the rest of the world is a jungle," he said
"And the jungle could invade the garden."
"The gardeners should take care of it, but they will not protect the garden by building walls. A nice small garden surrounded by high walls in order to prevent the jungle from coming in is not going to be a solution," he added.
"Because the jungle has a strong growth capacity, and the wall will never be high enough in order to protect the garden," Borrel stressed.
"The gardeners have to go to the jungle. Europeans have to be much more engaged with the rest of the world. Otherwise, the rest of the world will invade us, by different ways and means."
Despite using this analogy to give a message that the EU should be concerned more about the world, his remarks were under fire in the last few days especially on social media.
A lot of users and critics said that Borrell's remarks had a "racist" and "colonialist" undertone in them and reflected long-outdated views of European superiority.

Here, Bruges is a good example of the European garden. Yes, Europe is a garden. We have built a garden. Everything works. It is the best combination of political freedom, economic prosperity and social cohesion that the humankind has been able to build - the three things together. And here, Bruges is maybe a good representation of beautiful things, intellectual life, wellbeing.

His main three points are all very rational and realistic.
1: outside of the EU there is the jungle. Not a dark, threatful place but a wild and unruly one. EU with all it's flaws has a very strong foundation with the economy, human rights, and prosperity at its center. He says "don't build a wall because it is not a solution".
We need to work with the rest of the world, not for them, nor against them.
2: Russia is a threat and Putin cannot afford to be bluffing. If he uses nuclear weapons then the Russian army will be destroyed. The EU and NATO will not stand back.
3: Really from 27:00 onwards. Let go of "you or me" because it will lead to dangerous conflicts. The EU was created to accept "you and me" and the further away from that the closer to real conflicts we get.

The former leader of Azov, Andrew Biletsky had said in 2010 that the nation’s mission was to “lead the white races of the world in a final crusade… against Semite-led Untermenschen [subhumans]” and NATO/EU have been funding such forces in Ukraine. People here make a lot of valid points, but I think the most troublesome one is that his european colleague has used pretty much the same rhetoric to call for holocaust and invasion of Eastern Europe and USSR less than 100 years ago. And, for all the crimes of USSR, USSR didn't invade Europe and cause a holocaust.
P.S.: The jungle has had empires in the East and Middle East before the Roman empire taught the british to use toilet. History shows that each region had and will continue to have ups and downs. Those who are down now will be up later and vice versa.
