2022 BMW iX xDrive50 - REVIEW - Is this the best All-Electric SUV ?

  • It's fair to say the BMW iX xDrive M50 has controversial looks and a hefty price tag of £98,000 plus options !
Putting that to one side though I think this is one of the best cars to come out of BMW in recent times. It has an edgy and modern interior, is packed full of ground breaking technology and drives really well.
Can the positives out-weigh the negatives ? How fast is it to 62 ? What is the range ? How much does it cost...really ?

Nice review Ped. So based on 232 miles range at 78%, at 100% the range would be around 297 miles. Not too bad, seeing as it had been driven hard.

Hi Pete, great video. I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually like the exterior!
I think it looks best in darker colours, but it's different and you are not going to mistake it for anything else on the road. The new BMW interior direction is fantastic.
As someone has already said in the comments, I'm sure it's way ahead of the Range Rover in terms of quality and reliability (don't forget technology too)!. The 40 "slower" version is enough for most and is something I would consider when it's time to change my car.
Keep up the great content and Merry Christmas!

I pre ordered a 50 last decemeber after cancelling an iX3 - I liked the looks day 1 and having only seen one in the flesh when mine was actually in production late November I was even more impressed. There was a 3 week delay with mine it is fully specced (every option but not leather) but its now in the UK and will pick it early 2022

Lovely to still have vehicles here where range isn't an issue or a talking point and I have zero distraction from multi function screens so I can concentrate on the driving. Back to the future.

If people think that this BMW iX is not good looking, then I'd suggest they have a look at some of the new American SUV's that are on the market right now.
It'll make you appreciate this Beemer.
As for me. The outside is OK. The interior is in a different class. It's quite stunning. And the battery range that BMW are quoting will make 90% of current EV's seem superfluous in comparison.
_I was trying to work out the interior colour of the BMW. In some light, it was brown and in other light, it was red!!??_
The exterior looks are growing on me. As they did with the 4 series. So no complaints from me for this iX.
    Great video Mr. PP 8-))...

Firstly, need to acknowledge I'm picking up my iX 50 M Sport with most of the options in a week or so. However, you asked the question of what else you can get that goes this far. So not quite as far but the Kia EV6 goes 300 miles and can tow 1600Kg. You might be saying that there is no comparison between the marques and you may be right. BUT, for £50K you get a car that goes for over 300 miles (WLTP) has many of the tech features of the iX, is pretty comfortable and quiet, can tow a reasonable load and is very quick.... for well less than half the price. Only problem is that the Kia AWD has slipped and slipped and is now forecast to be delivered about a year after an order was placed and 6 months later than the original delivery date. So you certainly don't have to pay £117K to get most of what the iX gives you. BTW, I've never liked the BMW 'drug' dealer' style but I love the shape of the iX. I was taught to hold the steering wheel at 10 to 2 and used to get told off if my hands slipped to the middle (Vauhall Viva). So this steering wheel suits me just fine.

    • @gibsonmb1
      @gibsonmb1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

and just to add, to get the £98K above up to the same gadget spec as an EV6 I had to add options taking it to £115K!

    • @SDK2006b
      @SDK2006b ปีที่แล้ว

The Polestar 3 coming end of 2023 is a perfect competitor to this iX50, it’s has everything this car has, including the options for £88k. I had one pre-ordered but it won’t be available in time for when I need a car, so ordered the iX.

Ian the Petrol Head has to agree - I sat in this car at Goodwood FoS and I thought it was the best interior for an SUV I've ever sat in. Wow! The outside? User Interface looks a bit over complicated, wonder how long they will support it and keep updating it. Keep up the great reviews

It might be a technical marvel but £90k plus to drive something that looks that hideous means it will have an uphill battle. Love it. Your review is outstanding. Thank you. my daily driver is 2021 X5 45e with up to 38 miles @ full charge. With 31,000 miles on it in the past 31 months. Other than the initial E battery recall when new, the car has performed flawlessly. Most days, it never burns any gasoline. Monthly in commutes 300 miles between AZ and CA. Otherwise, the gasoline purchase would be nil. With solar batteries on our roof, the fuel cost has been minimal. The miles per gallon have been 28.6. Before I purchase an EV SUV or wagon, I need a 350-mile range @$70,000.

I've driven the eDrive 40 model and was really impressed. Performance was amazing, I can't see when you would need the extra grunt of the M50 model. Price of that is “a bit” better, but still £75k plus. Still, this model's competing with Tesla Model X which is £100k. Don't see how you think the design is so challenging, it still looks like an SUV and the grille is smaller than that of the Audi eTron!

That's one eye-watering price-tag. There's a lot to like about it, especially the interior and would love to have a drive in it to see what BMW's interpretation of the new age is but boy the front end and awkward rear quarter styling is unforgivable. Genuinely excited to see what the next design phase will bring when BMW finally get the point and do what they do best. Great review sir considering the challenges you faced on the day.

Yep, I agree with you that the outside of the car will take a bit of getting used to, although I thought that of the 4 series, too.
Having sat in the ix the interia is a fantastic place to be , this is what you get when a main stream vehicle manufacturer starts building EV'S as opposed to a tech company building cars I.e. Tesla .
Lovely vehicle, but not affordable to the many.😟

Hi Pete, once again great review, really like your relaxing and analytic style. You're best automotive youtuber by far. What comes to IX, that is definitely most controversial car I ever seen. As longtime Bimmer fanboy I felt sick when the first pictures came public. It looked so hideous and absurd that only Fiat Multipla was even more horrible looking car. After seeing car at media over and over again, i'm starting to even like it some how. Seeing it live few weeks ago in metallic red paint with bronze bits and pieces, 22 alloys I was blown away, looks awesome and totally raise strongly willingness to own it. Interior is best what market can offer.

Well done on the review. I am here debating an IX or Tesla Model X. I have a res on both and they both have good and bad points. Tesla, the supercharger network but bland style and quality. BMW, the interior and quiet ride but charging will be a pain. I am leaning more to BMW as I have had many of them and all were reliable. We have an X5 now so think going into the IX would be an easy transition.

Great video Mr Ped. Agree about the overall looks. What is it about the world of car manufacturers and dashboard menus Surely the reason for stopping drivers from using mobile phones in cars was to stop distracting the driver from driving. The distraction has been moved from the phone to the dashboard. There will surely be prangs, accidents and god forbid fatalities from drivers setting temperatures and searching through dash menus and suchlike. Beautiful aesthetic design inside and out but flawed I think 🤔

It’s far too much for me that. Too big, too heavy and too much money. I enjoy driving and I just can’t see how that would satisfy that need either. Sure, like every other EV you have the instant torque party piece, but when that becomes boring, what’s left?
I’m not even sure whether we even need to buy an EV. By the time ICE cars are outlawed (and probably even by the time new ones stop being sold in around 8 years time) we won’t even own cars anymore. We’ll just press a button and an Apple/Amazon/Google/Tesla self driving car will arrive at our home and take us to our destination autonomously.
I say, until then, just drive what puts a smile on your face 😊

I really like this car. The exterior is polarising but as with any new design, the looks grow on you on. Lot’s of people complaining about the price too, seems like a standard moan with any new car now. Pretty sure an ICE SUV with this power and tech is north of £95k too (e.g. X5 M is from £115k)
I’m waiting for similarly priced Polestar 3 coming late 2022 but this is high up on my list.

For me the price of the car is a lot of money. While it maybe be able to do the 300 plus miles on it's batteries, it would be a case of how many time can it do it through the 5 - 10 years that the batteries would work. Also, how much would it cost to replace the batteries in 5 to 10 years time when the current batteries have worn out?

BMW i3 batteries were tested to 4600 charge cycles that was 540,000 miles equate that to the iX > 1,000,000 miles. BMW battery management is good unlike early Nissan Leaf's that suffered with battery problems and had no cooling I believe. They do come with a 8 year 100,000 mile battery warranty

Great review. Please get it back for a better, longer review. Why do all/most electric cars cost so much. Is it because manufacturers can charge it and make a big profit. As they'll not make it on servicing as this is supposed to be simple technology and easier to do. The range is impressive and its what I would like, so I can visit family. Just getting out of Cornwall and on to a motorway is 100 miles.

The elephant in the room remains public infrastructure (or lack thereof) and we are years away from a satisfactory solution there. I could not see myself moving beyond a hybrid (currently running a Range Rover Sport PHEV) until the range anxiety issue is solved. As for the car tested I could live with the looks easier than I could live with the price.

The thing that's really keeping me in my ICE powered RSQ3, is the question of 'is going EV actually a wise, very expensive, 'investment''?. EVs are moving on at such a pace, in more than one sense of the word.... what is at the moment the best EV out there, won't be within 6 months. Then there are companies like Toyota investing in other powertrains like Hydrogen. I'm old enough to remember the VHS vs Betamax video tape thing, a lot of people ended up with a lot redundant tech littering up their living rooms after that. Using a similar analogy, there is the fact that people are now going back to things like Vinyl records, CDs and tapes, because streaming audio, and video, is actually really rubbish quality and reliant on even more ever changing tech to even deliver it. In 10 years things will have moved on even further......or even back to where we are now if some of the doubts about EVs are realised. Until then, I'll keep my powder dry thank you!

Peter…I will try to make this quick! You are very diplomatic about the looks..the thing is a an oversized mix of tired shapes with a deeply tasteless plastic front. The inside looks wonderful but that screen is a big beautiful distraction…cars are not desk top computers….you do not sit at your desk with rain, traffic, pedestrians, lights, cameras and bicycles all trying to get you….the screen would be good on that desk. Performance is impressive but how long do the tyres last though..think weight and that huge torque…will people like a £1500 bill every 5,000 miles? It is a mix of wonderful and dreadful…at the moment the dreadful is just too dominant. I’m not buying one..but certainly would buy an EV if it drove like the BMW but looked inspiring…and so far, Hyundai is out in front on that score!
Stay safe Peter…and may I wish you and Tracey the very best peaceful Christmas and a safe and successful 2022. You help us week after week despite the germs but keep at it and keep testing. Maybe the virus jaws will release their grip by Summertime.🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼😃

My Tesla was bought online directly, doesn’t need servicing, and had been designed down to a weight and price with no need to appeal to historic customers.
EV’s are a challenge to the traditional, with lots of global service/showrooms to support, I’m not sure that BMW is quite ready for that.

Just had a quick skim through the car's spec and couldn't determine the battery chemistry. But it's likely to be lithium based, and lithium is relatively light weight as battery material goes, yet still the beast weighs a whole big bundle. There's a possibility of aluminium (had to add that to my spell check dictionary) being used for batteries some time in the future. Fingers crossed for that!
Now I can't really say that I will only buy attractive cars, and my 2008 Astra Estate will agree. But this Bimmer is just unpleasant to look at. I'd have to don Zaphod Beeblebrox's peril sensitive sunglasses every time I got in and out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😎
