If you do this again, find a little piece of windshield wiper rubber about an inch long. Fill the letters with paint like you did. Then squeegee the area lightly to get rid of the excess paint. Let the paint dry and you will have to spend less time cleaning the paint off.
I used to do something similar when I used to build models as a kid. The one big difference is that I didn't wait for the paint to dry. I applied and wiped it back off quickly while it was still wet. If you use a flat tool or are careful with your hands, the paint will stay in the grooves, and it's easy to make adjustments if you mess up. No risk of screwing with the curing process of the paint with oils or spirits either.
As I was watching this, I started feeling calm and relaxed. Then I started craving tacos and doritos. Shortly after, I started wanting waffles and fries. I miss Bob ross.
If you want to make the paint a little thinner when experimenting, set a little bit in a bottle-cap and mix-in a few drops of acetone, (nail polish remover). That will break the surface tension and allow it to more easily wick down into every nook and cranny of the markings. Since its a solvent, it will evaporate quite rapidly..
During the sixties I used a lot of Testors paint for model cars, airplanes and other model kits. Those little bottles were expensive as hell. But since I can now afford expensive AR's. I just might try doing this to my rifles and handguns. Looks really cool and when not able to go out to ranges, a little time spent making my firearms looking good is worth it.
I have found that high quality Nail Polish works better, already has a nice applicator and last longer. My Lady is one of the Greatest Nail Techs and she loves to shoot.
Hi, just a tip for longer lasting paint, put a small ball bearing or a small nut or bolt into the paint jar. When you shake it up the metal will mix the paint much better then when it mixes on its own. Over time the paint will settle on the bottom and it's a pain in the rass to mix it properly.
I just stumbled across this last night, awesome job! So, I decided to do mine as well, but being impatient as I am I only let it dry about 90 minutes before removing the excess with Hoppes. It turned out just as well and I got my instant gratification!
Anything I need to be painted camouflage , I always use Testers enamel paints , I’ve been doing it since 2001 . This paint is tough & takes a beating . My daughter still has one of my early paintball masks that I painted with Testers enamel paint & it’s held up over the years , no flaking off or chipping off , no cracking & I painted it on one of them cheap beginners masks , ya no the ones that are like a thick silicone that feel oily to the touch . I’ve painted my hunting bows with it & did some of my friends bows with it & it always turns out great . I always use a flat paint for camo colors & it holds up exceptionally well & I don’t skimp on the paint , I put it on thick in layers .
Very good video. The key for good results, for me, was letting the paint cure for a day and not using a credit card to wipe off the excess. I got a great finish with very full and evenly filled letters.
Looks great! I've tried a lot of different ways for color filling and prefer using testors paint. I have one suggestion for you to try next time. I like to use a new razorblade to slowly and carefully cut off the excess paint. It cuts down on the time, helps preserve crisp edges and limits the amount of solvent/cleaner soaking into the paint. Try it on a magazine sometime. That's an easy place to practice.
I do this to my golf irons, a good way to control the amount of paint. Trim the tip of the toothpick to resemble a quil or fountain pen tip. Make it flat as opposed to having a rounded point.
I like how that turned out. I ordered some Testors metallic paints and some artists brushes to toy with. Im a retired bridge painter and our motto was "If it's runnin it ain't rustin!" So my gun should turn out pretty fn sick😁
I really like what you did here. I've painted my AR so I don't think I'd be able to do this, without jacking up the paint job that is, but if I ever get a weapon that I'm not going to paint then I'll for sure do this. Thumbs up sir.
So I picked up my new lowers 2 days ago and bought all the supplies that you used in this video. My lowers are polymer. I used red testor paint. If it comes out looking good, imma post my pick on this page. Thanks.
If you have a diabetic friend or family member, ask them for one of their syringes to paint in those super fine lines. I also gave a few of them to my dad for oiling his fishing reels with. As crazy as that may sound, they work great.
Sometimes toothpick is even too wide, I take razor knife an slice tip even smaller! Also I shape tip to fit job, sometime flat, sometimes round or beveled cuts help projects!
I usually use the hoppes 9 to take the extra paint off and sometimes its to strong and it will take the color fill out. Sometimes you have to go over it a couple times.
You should look into teflon/rubber clay working tools for paint application, much like silk screen it will force the paint into the groves and leave a-lot less paint behind for clean up.
I forgot you used Hopps Bore cleaner to remove the extra paint! i used the thinner and it actually took aome of the paint out of the fill! frustrating!!! i will try the Hopps with my next fill and see what happens. Your lower looks amazing! I love the colors!
Colorfilled my black FNX-45s logos white with high temp exhaust paint and a q tip, let it dry overnight and used the hopps bore cleaner, worked great! Make you you use light strokes not pushing down so hard so you dont have to touch up the paint later on
Great instructional video, thank you for posting. The job you did looked completely professional. Thanks for passing on your knowledge to your fellow shooters. Cheers
I done this on a Spikes lower. I used non acetone nail polish remover like everyone says to use. It actually ate into the metal. Made it discolored also
Finger nail polish. Very high quality paint in more colors than you can imagine. Wipe using a coffee filter or newspaper. Those also work great for cleaning glass.
Ha! My Crotch... Nice name. Cool video too. I learned how to do something new. I been wanting a AR for a while. Now that I saw this video? I'm doing it. That turns out pretty badass! Nice job, man.
A suggestion to get a good crisp lines instead of useing you finger as the backer for cotton swab try a flat peice of metal or plastic so the Hoppes 9 only hits the high spots
if you thin the paint out quite a bit you can usually get away with a single touch and the paint will flow into almost the entire location you are trying to highlight.
Good video, first filling video I've seen so far. Gonna try that on some of my Glocks and Stag ARs. Just gotta figure out what colors. Thanks for the tips.
I did the letters and numbers on several of my customized airguns. And did it a Hell of a lot faster, and loads less complicated, in maybe 2 minutes max. And they all came out looking every bit as good as this. Used yellow or gold paint.
Dude… you’re putting Hoppe’s 9 on aluminum/anodizing? I was trying to touch up a Sylvan arms flared magwell trigger guard with a Birchwood Casey super black touchup pen. It ended up looking horrible so I took some Hoppe’s to try to get the super black pen paint off and it ate right through the anodizing and started corroding the aluminum… since then I don’t use Hoppe’s on my AR or anything with aluminum.
Your name is epic. Did you ever get in trouble at the BMV or ordering pizza? They were probably like "Sir, that's not funny. Please give us your real name." Lol but seriously, thanks for the video. Good work
if you take a small, flat piece of acryllic, you can use it as a sanding block, and have a much easier and faster time removing the excess. you also won't dig into the grooves that you want painted.
a true gun hobbyist. using model paint on gun parts, we are the few, the proud...the enthusiasts. Thanks!
Doesn’t make it any less reliable and I like it a lot.
I never liked the idea of using spray paint.
This I would try.

Yep, similar to the way I do it. Fast, easy, works great.

i hear ya on that the wifes loves that we have one thing in common nail polish lol
what do you use to remove the unwanted nail polish
+Harvie McClintock non acetone polish remover
Tell the truth, you took the nail polish from your makeup kit you keep in the closet.
Ya no.. nail polish flakes off on women's nails. Much less under stress and heat..

I can barely find time to get my stuff assembled let alone do something like this. Nice job.

Just picked up some paints today, can’t wait to try it when I get home✨
Never thought of using Hoppes 9; great tip. I also saw where someone suggested using a coffee filter to avoid lint coming off.

if you thin the paint out quite a bit you can usually get away with a single touch and the paint will flow into almost the entire location you are trying to highlight.
Use a credit card to scrape off the excess wet paint, and it also pushes the paint further down into the grooves. Less clean up.

looks very nice. you can use a crayon too to fill in. just rub it in an then wipe off the excess.
Captain Howdy really??? crayon works?
It works, but not too well on a pistol slide or any other part that gets hot. The crayon will melt.
