This is a clip from a TV programme of the final rehearsals for the From the Cradle tour broadcast on BBC2 (UK). I saw him at Sheffield in the UK on that tour - awesome old school blues and a welcome change from the Phil Collins produced commercial shit Clapton had been putting out for years before going back to real blues.
I've still got a recording of it on VHS - must get it transferred to DVD before I wear out the tape.

elmore usually played slide in open D on a really cheap acoustice like a kay with a single coil in the sound hole and low wattage amp with everything cranked on 10, and a slide made out of aluminum . he used the covers that they used on the old t.v. tubes.

Though EC is one of my favorite gun slingers, snakehips81 is right about EC's mischaracterization of EJ's playing style. EJ is KNOWN for attacking a lot of his songs. Not everyone can do that as sucessfully as EJ, but then, there's only one Elmore James. FYI the best song ever played on this planet is Elmore James's MADISON BLUES......don't even try to argue that....gotta go play it right now.

I don't agree with Clapton's comments mostly - he says Elmore's sound was quite clean and not loud etc
    I think that is nonesense.
However, he does a very good job playing the tune despite the band being a bit "cabaret" and in general, a bit "safe" rather than gelling together and making the tune much more organic, with feel to it.

Is there a 2nd guy just off at the far right hand side of the stage, ALSO playing guitar ???
The rhythm guitar part keeps on playing whilst Eric is playing the slide solos.
It is possible that what I am hearing is the bass guitar, up the neck, playing the shuffle part, with about as much fuzzy distortion as Eric's guitar, but I'm not overly convinced.
Perhaps that guy in the wings, with a guitar strapped on is playing the rhythm part, and perhaps ONLY when Eric is not ??? That's quite some gig, only playing on certain verses, replacing what rhythm parts Eric does, when Eric is solo'ing ??? !!!
Otherwise, quite a faithful version of a mix of two of Elmore's versions of the Tampa Red song. The piano player there got the piano parts pretty darn good.
The bit that irks me about Elmore's version(s), and thus also Eric Clapton's version, is whether the band should stay on the 5-chord, or hastily go down to the 4-chord, before going back down to the root 1-chord.
On Elmore's two versions, they are all over the place, one verse to another, so it probably left Eric wondering the best way to do that part of each verse. I still think it sounds wrong doing it the way he does it. I've been doing it that way for years, until recently, when I've decided to stay on the 5-chord.
What does everyone else do ??? Not sure if Elmore knew, or maybe it was his band that didn't know !!???

Probably because EC turned his back to the camera. Unless you like looking at his ass, they had to change the shot. They managed to get a camera on him between a couple of cymbal stands, but it wasn't a good shot, so they moved it around. Makes sense to me.
