  • Technology has changed the way that people can play games, from casual gamers who play a few times a week or month on their phone, to those who play every day and make a living playing professionally. This documentary takes the audience on a journey through all the levels of gamers providing testimonials and background information from each group.
Level Up explores the video gaming culture from the perspective of a wide range of gamers starting with casual smart phone gamers to avid, professional gamers, LAN Party organizers and video game content creators. The documentary covers a brief history of video games and their social angle, as well as the competitive aspect engendered by large-scale gaming events. This is a current and relevant topic examined through interviews and research and presented in an interesting and engaging manner.

You can use the Xbox Controller on the PC, so console gamers need not worry if they dislike using a mouse & keyboard.
A good documentary on gaming & gamers. Largely positive, which is a plus, and not focusing so much on the "evils" or "darker side" of video gaming, like many other reports & documentaries then to do.

A controller can never beat a mouse and keyboard in multiplayer. Even with aim assist they don't stand a chance. I agree with what your saying but it doesn't make the pc anymore enticing whatsoever.

What I brought up is multiplayer specific. Just pointing out if your going for the multiplayer it is my recommendation to use a mouse and keyboard. I don't want to deter anyone from something fun! I respect all views and personal preferences. I just thought it was worth a mention :/ I do agree with you.

JoyToKey is very useful for making Mouse Movements and keyboard binds to the Xbox 360 controller as well. So if your emulator or old game does not allow custom keybinds, this is an app that is easy to learn and a way to get around that.

First off, the pic used for Pong is misleading- the original Pong home console was released in 1975. It was the Pong coin-op cabinet that was released in 1972. Second, it was the commercial success that started with Pong, but it wasn't the first video game, or even home console. The Computer Space cabinet predates it (1971) as the first commercially sold, which was based off of Spacewar! (1962). The first commercially available home console was the Magnavox Odyssey, released months before the Pong cabinet in 1972. There are other contenders for "first video game," but that debate gets rather convoluted.
In short, this could've been cleared up by showing a pic of one of the Pong arcade cabinets, and simply saying Pong was the "first commercially successful video game," keeping it simple without getting into the complexities of what the actual first video game is (which could easily fill an hour-long documentary).
Also, the caste system used in this video oversimplifies things, focusing more on a mainstream media spin rather than being objective. The labeling of "Level 2" as Console Gamers, which is more of a preferred platform than an actual dedication or competitive level, is misinformed at best. Most Casual and intermediate gamers I know prefer PC platform, usually because it's more accessible. Further, among the Hardcore crowd, there's a bit of a war-of-words between PC and Console gamers as to which platform is best, with those who enjoy both often calling the two polarized sides elitists. And that's not even covering the shouting matches about which individual console is best, retro-vs-modern, etc. The video didn't have to go into detail about the whole mess, but suggesting a sliding scale from Smart Phone, to Console, to PC is a chief determinant of where one stands definitely displays a clear lack of research.

Eruantano well, it depends the type of game you play. For exemple, if you play cs, its true that kb and mouse are superior, while controller is superior in fighting games. Overall, i prefer mouse and kb since im playing cs alot but i do play melee at a competitive level and its possible to map the input on a kb but it will just suck, so for that game at a competitive level, a controller is by far superior. well, my point is, it depend the game your playing. lol btw sorry for my bad english.

I started with PONG. Then the Atari 2600. Next came the Atari 800. My first game was Temple of Apshai, an 8 bit dungeon crawler. From there, I went to PC. I think it had an 8086 processor and a 4 color display and 16MB of RAM and something like a 20 MB hard drive. It also had a 300 baud dial up modem. I have a calculator with better specs than that these days.
The best thing about gaming is it's diversity. There is something for everyone. I like single player RPGS like Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Other people are more social and they can play PVP or CO-OP games. There's no shortage of games and game types.
Another thing I like about gaming is it's very cost effective. I probably spent $50.00 on Skyrim when it was released on 11Nov!!, but I've spent over 1000 hours in the original game and S.E. version combined. Not a bad investment. I still play it regularly. I'm always adding or removing MODS to keep it fresh. I'm running around 130 MODS right now.

It seems normal to me that there would be people that are Level 3 or 4
on console and Level 1 on PC and vice versa.... the feel of the
controller vs the mouse + keyboard is different and I could see someone
used to the 16 buttons of a controller feeling overwhelmed by the
seemingly infinite keys on a keyboard. If he played for a couple of
weeks on a 2,000$ Gaming PC he would feel differently. It is just all
perspective and what you decided to spend your money on.
Personally I'd rather have an xbox 360 or a ps3 than a Gaming PC, just because it seems such a waste of money and you get too addicted on PC or PS4 or Xbox 1, play it safe and buy shitty old consoles so you actually spend time doing something else, like making giant comments on youtube.

I'm 47 and I've been a gamer all my life, before windows was even a bad thought in my head, and what I've learned is that the multiplayer community has become toxic, and it appears that YT's monetization scheme is making things worse, as people no longer play for fun, but for money, and if they want to stay in the "game" must abide by corporate terms of service agreements that seek to remove our Constitutional rights. From the 80's to 20012, gaming was interesting, good, awesome, then all the sudden around 2013 to 2018, ...this massive agenda to destroy good gaming companies, and create this Steam Early Access means of ripping gamers off by the thousands. Kids are becoming more foul mouthed, and obnoxious, with trolling, griefing, and cheating the mainstay requirements for being a modern day gamer. Kids are trolled, they grow up to be trolls, that's their training! If you can't see that with your PHD, then maybe you've failed the qualification round... You have to be a gamer before you can know what's going on in "gaming".

lvl4 could be considered players that are paid to compete for specific esports brands like fnatic, tsm e.t.c They might even live together in a game house with paid expenses from their sponsors and brand. At that level at least, I can assure you, there is no room for being a douchebag or asshole against your teammates or opponents :)

If there was a Lvl. X, that would be my level... I use to be a big time Runescape PVPr back in the day, then I went to League of Legends (after Valve and Riot split) and got into the hardcore play-style similar to WC and it was just epic. Played in some tournaments and racked up some money and honestly I have to say I was burned out. I hit my goals and it would just wreak my concentration on RS PVP I wasn't use to the slow paced combat. I had to move on with my life at this point because I love teaching at my university and it was just too much of a work load to continue. So now I'm pretty much a casual gamer now celebrating my 13th year of Runescape. And ya can find me at the GE metal-forging in Varrock. Aside from RS and my university I run server maintenance on my companies Minecraft Server.

keep in mind, in the beginning of the documentary, the chart on there stated gaming has a major audience in the 18-49 crowd. Statistics and several studies have proved that gaming mostly focuses with young adults and adults in general. Games aren't merely a thing for kids, they are a way to explore a world that is not possible in real life. to connect worldwide. to otherwise create a feeling of euphoria and pleasure whilst playing. not everyone who plays games is a nobody, remember that...

Right, let me populate that list. Things gaming is good for
    - Hand eye coordination
    - Reflexes and reactions
    - Problem solving
    - Multitasking
    - Teamwork (if you play online properly)
    - Can give your brain a work out (unlike a film where you just sit there)
It also subjects you to story telling (which when done right can be epic), new ideas, and pure creation
And that's all I have for now, some of those are a stretch, but games are good for something :D

I would say I am lvl 3. Honestly, lvl 4 is that category of also ragers who tend to yell at people when they don't know what they are doing. Also, I think lvl 4 gamers are those who spend their time playing a particular game that they have so much knowledge and experience on. One example would be CoD gamers, they would be considered hard-core gamers, unfortunately.

Most people go to work/school, shops. There's no difference whether you decide to play online or go to a bar - you will end up socializing. As a gamer girl that chose this as a hobby I can say that we don't find any person of the opposite sex attractive just because we don't get out a lot. We tend to meet people online, fall in love, meet, go dating, get together. What's the difference? It started online and not in a bar. Don't assume that gamers have no taste ;)

A lot of video games today are not time wasting activities. Unless you consider reading a book or watching a movie a waste of time. Because that's exactly what many games are like today. A story unfolds in front of you with a plot and characters. Except of course that you can participate in the story of the game.

I like documentaries like this that help debunk a few myths about gaming. You know them: girls don't play games (2/5 of the gaming population is female), gamers are all young adults (average age is 37), and gaming is for nerds/the hardcore (no, gaming is for everyone).

Actually Priced at a sweet $2.4 million dollars, this Super Sport upgrade of the original Bugati Veryron bagged the bragging rights of being the fastest car on the road at 267.856 mph. Due to a challenge from Hennessey claiming “that for it to achieve its record top speed of 431.0 km/h (267.8 mph), the car used was in a state of tune not available to customers…its Venom GT… was road-ready and unmodified and was therefore a production car in the strict sense of the term.”

I think being a true, core gamer isn't about the platform or necessarily the games you play (with a few exceptions), it's your approach. Real, hardcore gamers care about gameplay, mechanics, fundamentals, game engine, balance, competition, achievement etc. as well as fun. Casual gamers are those who play games which have a relatively low skill cap, or play games with little motivation other than to pass the time.

For those complainging about the car being too small: anyone who buys a car called "MINI" and then complains about it being small, is an idiot.
There's plenty of room in the back of a Mini. You'd have to be over 6'5" to need the seat all the way back. I'm 6' and can easily sit behind the drivers seat in my Mini

level 3 because i realized that level 4 can ruin me may be i will soon go to level 2........trust me game especially online game is like a virtual drugs that can nearly ruin you emotionally ,changes your behavior, you sometime don't make difference between real and virtual ,you start believing on stupid things very easily.....and online game is true 'stress explosive' rather than calling 'stress reliever' .....i almost got over the online game addiction by playing single player campaign using cheats and trainers to complete a game within few hours playing at very easy level by the time you complete the game you develop the boredom for that game........but in case of online game nothing is same all the time every thing shown or you experience is very dynamic that's the reason you never feel bore and that's the beginning of your addiction.......i am an online gamer too but i am still trying to reduce my playtime from 7 hrs to 2 hrs a day even in my vacation ,i switching to single-player game with more cheats and trainer XD or puzzle games.....i am a gamer and i confess that i am a game addicted stupid
