    In today's video, we look at Microsoft's entry into the console market in an effort to stop the might of the Sony PlayStation brand and their fears that PlayStation will replace Microsoft desktop computers. Let's explore Microsoft's relationship with Sega through both the Dreamcast and the Xbox era. Can the Xbox be considered the Dreamcast 2? Was the Dreamcast sabotaged by corporate turncoats? Let's dig into all of this!!!

    When the Dreamcast died, as a hardcore SEGA kid since the SMS I was for the first time a gamer without a home. Peter Moore going to MS, the controller design, and the specific franchises Sega decided to put on the console got me to buy an Xbox. Still my second favorite console behind the Dreamcast.

      Yeah I feel the same way, even though I wasn't really old enough to be a SEGA supporter in the 16-bit era to be fair, the Genesis and Master System were both before my time. I did have a PS1 but I did jump to the M$ ship when the Xbox was announced.

I do not know but yeah and for the one that said such and such was before your time- a lot of it is these last few years, particularly, although I noticed even before 2020 that retro and older stuff is been somewhat trendy but lasting for quite a bit not a true fad that dissipates instantly after coming into existence... or commonplace to go thriftshopping not even just collecting in general... but pretty much for people trying fo game without any existing way to do so are probably kinda using whatever can be found.... luckily since I do I kinda just do so for fun but that said I...forget where this was going so yeah...

    This means, that the Xbox 3, known as the Xbox 1, is really the Dreamcast 4, which is really the Master System 7, or Master System 7.5 if you count the 32X, making current Xbox generation the Dreamcast 5, or Master System 8 or 8.5, and potentially the Master System 9 if you’re counting the Sega CD expansion. It becomes even more clear, when you consider that the initials of Master System, are MS, which is a commonly used nickname for Microsoft. The lineage is very clear, and proves that the Japanese never fully lost the war, and Bill Gates, has been a secret Japanese agent, the whole time.

    While I have heard that the Xbox was to perhaps be a successor to the Dreamcast, one thing kind of confirmed that theory when I got my hands on one from a local thrift clearance store for $5 in perfect working order. It was just a plain Xbox, until I soldered in the mod chip, and started downloading disc images for it. Almost all of them weighed in around 1.2 GB, at least for the earlier releases. The same size, more or less, as the GDROM images for a Dreamcast ISO.
    Perhaps Microsoft intended to use the same format for the Xbox, but upon learning the PS2 would be DVD based, they followed suit, and went with that as the default at first, but without the lousy excuse for copy protection (too big for CD-Rs, unless various sacrifices were made, and an already cracked encryption scheme), but the well established DVD format was already there, and they could go with an off the shelf DVD drive for the most part, which would in the end save them money.

  • @nick6var

    The mythical 'set-top box' was mentioned early in the 1990s as a single device that could replace a VHS, PC, and game system. Technology was the biggest barrier to achieving the device, but increments were made along the way. The CD-i and 3DO had the multimedia discs like Compton's Encyclopedia as precursors to the information delivery online. Both also had Video CD support (with additional components) before the debut of DVD.
    Streaming with any degree of quality was years away, but the DIVX DVD players had reusable discs which, with a quick online fee, could be watched for 48 hours. The concept was cheap fees to rent movies without a trip to rental stores. It failed, while DVD succeeded.
    Microsoft also had WebTV, a set-top device that allowed TVs to access the internet at a chugging speed. It was adequate for accessing information, but little else.
    All these steps were moving towards that ultimate goal of the set-top box which could replace the PC, and Microsoft clearly knew it. The big fear is that it would be another company to achieve it first, as presented in this video.

      The biggest obstacle was really the ergonomics/use case. A PC wants to be on a desk with a task chair while everything else wants to be on a large screen for everyone to share. Even today, you could easily slap a keyboard and mouse onto all three current gen consoles but there's little point to doing so.

    Another lovely bit of history, there. While the Xbox isn't the Dreamcast 2, it is fun to imagine what might've been had Microsoft not decided to go it on their own for the Xbox.
    The fun part is, right now, I can play everything from Atari to PS2 on my Xbox Series, so if you're willing to do what Sega don't, it is possible to make it much more than even Microsoft ever intended.

    5:49, and that's when the dark age of gaming started on pc, when someone,a team or who know, said that "console will be better thanpc hurr durr". meaning that all devs were scared as shiit and developed only games for consoles. thankfully it all changed in recent years thanks God, those were dark times indeed

    Bear in mind that the owner of Microsoft has always tried to destroy and sabotage the competition and I do not believe that this case is the exception. Although SEGA was already in a major structural crisis by the time Dreamcast saw the light, it is curious that most of the games moved to XBOX and that the Windows operating system that Dreamcast had included (in addition to its own, of course) was quite inefficient and few wanted to develop games on it.

    • @madhatter8508
      @madhatter8508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Windows CE was never included in the Dreamcast, either; it was loaded from the GD-ROM because Microsoft took so long developing the Dreamcast version that Sega did not have time to bake it into the console itself.

      I remember that one gaming magazine thought the Xbox could help keep the Dreamcast supported longer due to the OS. The thought was Xbox games would be easy to port to the DC, but the DC's demise put the kibosh on whatever could have been.

    Growing up as a hard core Sega fan, in my later years of life I started seeing Sega for what they were. Sega of America and Japan were two idiots that sabotage themselves out of existence.
    Today I am firmly planted on the Microsoft side of the coin for gaming as well as for gaming on a PC. If it wasn’t for Microsoft’s investment into Windows Media Edition, XBOX, and other home endeavors, gaming as we know it today would be MUCH different.
    Honestly don’t feel sorry for Sega’s fate.

    Yeah, they always stuck in my mind. if you think about it, the Xbox is a Dreamcast successor or spiritual sequel. It’s uncanny. Also, dream cast will always have a place in everybody’s heart and Sega knows that. The whole gaming community knows that. However, even being Bill Gates, does it mean squat if the hardware is butt cheek. So the Xbox competing with the Nintendo and PlayStation systems was a huge deal. It still is! Growing up in the early 2000s, licensed games would always be gamecube, PS2, Xbox, and sometimes PC. But the mature titles, were PS2, Xbox, and PC. Which is astounding because they were the consoles to have. It’s not like today were there are many options to play different games like Marvel’s Spider-Man or God of War. Just recently, if you didn’t have a PS4, your shit out of luck. But thanks to PC, the many options that can come about are inevitable. I’m just waiting on GamePass to be released on switch.

    Just think about it, had Microsoft NOT decided to enter the console war, do people really think that it would have been "just" Sony and Nintendo (asymmetrically) slugging it out for very long?...without ANY third competitor? There always seems to be exactly three seats at the console war table, so I strongly believe that some deep-pocketed company would have bailed out the SEGA financially and used the still-strong brand to create some kind of Dreamcast successor (or add-ons). There was too much money to be made for no one except Nintendo to attempt to steal some market share away from the PS2. The only reason nobody saved SEGA was because Microsoft was already casting a very long shadow and everyone could see that they were definitely going to steal that third seat one way or another.

    This wasn't the first time Microsoft had dabbled in consoles. Microsoft created the MSX, a PC/Console Hybrid, which they licensed to several companies, including Sony. While most kept to this hybrid design, Daewoo had different ideas. They created the console line known as the Zemmix, with 4 different iterations between 1985 and 1995. The MSX became iconic in Japan and Brazil, becoming the standard for home computing and gaming. SEGA actually licensed its games to be ported to the MSX upto the release of the Megadrive.

    I was a Sega fan back to the Master System days. The problem they always had was they couldn't get enough third party publishers. Then with the Saturn they made a system that was hard to develop for that is why they partnered with MS for CE with Dreamcast. By then the damage had already been done. It also isn't supprising that Sony ended up with more Sega games. Sega always realeased more games in Japan than the US ever saw.

    • @patsk8872
      @patsk8872 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of problems with both Sega and Nintendo's decisions. But re: 3rd party, Nintendo's bullying of 3rd parties is the main reason the master system died in the US.

    • @CaptainCaveman1170
      @CaptainCaveman1170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had Microsoft not chosen to bully their way into the third chair at the console war table, I strongly believe that SEGA would have been bailed out financially and the Dreamcast would have either been continued with performance add-ons like a DVD or extra chips or completely replaced by a backwards compatible "Dreamcast 2". There was simply too much money to be made in consoles to let SEGA go bankrupt and leave only Sony and Nintendo slugging it out. Sony would have still dominated that generation for sure but the SEGA offerings might have become the budget option or "eccentric choice" and I am sure it would have gotten excellent third-party support over time. The third party issue was originally caused by Nintendo but that tactic was deemed illegal and by the end of the Genesis's time in the sun, there was plenty of third party support for SEGA products.

    Microsoft should buy Sega from Sammy. Not only can they bring their IP onto Gamepass and have a Super Mascot like Sonic, but it would be clever to release future Xbox consoles in Japan under the Sega name 🤑
    If they are gonna buy Activision/Blizzard and Bethesda, might as well get a mega Japanese brand to round out their portfolio and gain some ground against Nintendo and Sony.
    BTW, it’s funny that Microsoft did the opposite of Bandai (Apple) Pippin in terms of Japanese marketing.
