I find it so bizarre that people would spend time and money decorating an entire room knowing they're going to get sick of it in a few months down the line - don't people actually know what they like any more? When 'dark academia' arrived as a trend, it was something I'd always liked but didn't know how to describe. I own a Victorian house and it's as authentically Victorian as I can get it and therefore could be described as 'dark academia'. It's never been a trend to me, just part of my lifelong interests/tastes. To see people decorating and spending money on an 'aesthetic' for it to be swapped out for the next trend, really makes me sad.
The buying books as decoration rather than to read or reference gets me! Let alone the fake interest in biology, journals, maps and so on. Why people think fake and follow is an enriching life is beyond me and it’s not good for the environment either. Stop consuming and trying to be someone else. Follow YOUR OWN heart and listen to your space.
I agree. I m the same. That is similar to my style and always has been what I veer toward. It’s fine that it was popular for a while. It will go and come again later as trends always do. I wish ppl would focus on their own personal taste and comfort rather than unsustainable nonsense and needing peer recognition or whatever pop psych term exists for this. I smh imagining all the beauty and expression that is missing from the world because ppl are looking at what everyone else is doing to copy something they don’t LOVE deep in their bones.
@@HellCatt0770ikr! They can buy the books they actually want and cover them with decorative paper or use false book fronts for the style but leave the rotting old books to us who actually want to read them!!😂. The really devoted ones can rebind new books in aged and tooled leather covers. Creativity people!! At least now if the trend is dying, I can find some more good stuff at the thrift❤
@@ElizabethNonsuch I’m surprised at the negative opinions here and your first statements is making an assumption that she knew she would tire of the decor in a few months? Where did you get that idea? She didn’t say that in her videos.
Yes, seriously. Tell me your books are for “aesthetics” without telling me they are for aesthetics……book bindings facing the back of the shelf and arranged in color order instead of subject, author, or title.
As a moody gothic academic, dark academia is more who I am rather than a trend I feel like I have to follow. I've always loved reading, writing, making art, learning new things, and I'm on my way to getting my masters degree in archaeology. I just genuinely love bones, antiques, and old styles of architecture. The concept of it suits my values and helps me to romanticize life.
Same here. It isn't a trend. I hate when something I love becomes super popular because that makes people think I am doing it for gimmicky reasons. Although I don't really care. Just wondering, but I bet your "dark academia" is pretty dark and very interesting compared to people who only do it for a season.
Oh my goodness I am so enamored with archaeology!! I have a BS in Criminology and am trying to find a school to offer a MA in Archaeology, because my Alam Mater doesn't offer one. Do you attend in person or online?
@@greylilycalligraphy I attend in person! I'm actually currently getting my BA in anthropology with a specialization in field methods, with the eventual goal to pursue my masters in archaeology. I'm aiming on getting my MA in Scotland as well because that's where my boyfriend is getting his masters right now and he loves it, and there's a lot of interesting and rich history there. Also I've always wanted to study abroad!
Everything that you describe as academia I have gotten rid of in recent years. My late husband's office was dark and moody, had over 1500 books and all of these other things that you talk about; bones from Africa sketches journals old typewriters ink pots, wax stamps, quill pens. He was a writer, amateur archeologist and intellectual and used it all - really got lost in his study. After he passed 6 years ago I felt like I was living in a museum and I got rid of it all. Then dark academia became a trend after I purge to minimal and painted everything white. But I don't think I did the wrong thing fir me, because living with all of that around me made me feel like I was choking on the past. That said, I love your home!
I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds like you gave yourself a breath of fresh air when you needed it. Praying the new look lifts your spirit whenever you walk into the rooms.💖
In everyplace I’ve lived, I’ve let the structure have a big say in how I decorated it. It’s like a silent partner in a collaboration that takes in account the land and view, the vibe of the neighborhood, my tastes and interests at the time, as well as the bones and the feel of the place. I’ve never been satisfied when I try to force my ideas onto a space not meant for them.
THIS! I think my spaces are very influenced by the architectural era of my home and what I think will work *with* that. I try very hard to respect that trends come and go, but design principles are static.
I am the opposite; I like what I like and I can’t help it if I can’t afford to live somewhere in keeping with that. My husband agrees with your view; if we lived in a 1960s era apartment he would want to add touches and fixtures in keeping with that but I’d still be throwing up my Georgian/Victorian decor. 🤷🏻♀️
“Dark Academia” is just a trendy name for a classic style that reflects the moody, curated, classic lifestyle of the educated, upper-class manor home society of England, especially, but also of its derivatives in classic New England style. I’m 63 years old and have been decorating in this style since my tweens; I have always loved a medieval mood, and throughout my life I’ve reflected that. The difference is, that is how I live, and for me it isn’t just an affectation. The “trend” you’re rejecting is just the appropriation and trivialization of a style of living that will never go “out of style.” If the style is done right, you should be able to live with it for a lifetime, and it should blend with other actual trends that can be incorporated but come and go. (That is where all the trendies we see on TH-cam get it wrong, and they end up just LARPing.) Looking at your home, though, I feel you went with the trend and not the style. But obviously it is your home and it’s beautiful either way.
Totally agree. I was the kid who painted her bedroom window as a medieval stained glass window. Who grew up collecting and reading old books. Who purchased and loved old solid wood furniture. Who has stained glass lights now in 3 rooms of my house. For me, I have always lived this way - Arts and Crafts meets Dark Academia. I can’t imagine anything else and I’ve never felt it being too heavy or dark emotionally for me. I do know that some people like other styles. They can have them. I try to collect quality and not styles so I can redecorate a few years later.
I agree !! like the classic shades too, and paint the wall the solid true color, not the rag or sponge rolling or patten.. I feel that makes walls looks dirty.
I have never followed the "trends" - I decorate the way I want, and dress the way I like. I am 67 years young, and my Grandmother always said to keep stuff, as fashion comes around again, and that seems to be so true. So why worry what others think are the trend, and just do and wear what you feel comfortable in. I have always loved bright colours, in my home decor, and in my clothes, so that is what I stick with. I am a recluse, but if I was to ever go into a social environment, I would want to stand out! I cherish being different. That gives me confidence to be who I am. I very rarely see another human being, but when I do, the most important thing to me is to be welcoming and kind. xxx
I completely agree… I have never been tempted to follow any trend, decor or fashion. I have my own style, it’s what makes me happy & comfortable. I do make changes but always because of something I love, not because of popularity.
Good for you, I feel the same way. It's so dizzying how often trends in clothing and home decor change these days. I agree, stick with what you love and feel comfortable with.
My style is quite eclectic, I love both light & dark shabby, light & dark academia, light & dark cottagecore. I'm 51 and have never been a slave to fashion or trends, I like what I like and don't care whether it's 'on trend' or not - it's just got to have a gorgeous vintage nostalgic air as I can't stand modern.
53 and agree, same here. I do like seeing what other people are doing though and have been led into some signage here and there, but am starting to get rid of that. I thrift shop and do facebook market place. Just bought an amazing solid oak table from the 1990's for $24. Guess someone thought it looked "old" lol, I love it. I have one piece of furniture that I purchased brand new, a recliner.
Me too! I like antiques but I like the clean lines of contemporary. I’ve never followed trends with decor or clothes. I do what fits our lifestyle and what makes us comfortable.
I agree. I have never stuck to one decorating style. My home is a mix of medieval, victorian, primitive, cabin, and witchy. I want people to feel like they have walked into a witches cottage in the middle of the woods. I still have a ways to go with some furniture pieces and still need to paint, but it's getting there.
Friendly tip for SW paint buyers. The Emerald line is just super expensive and doesn’t have a whole lot of advantages to it. Instead get the Promar 400 in eggshell (this product is typically used in commercial spaces so you know it’s good). Your eye can’t tell the difference in the two products from 10 feet away once they are on the wall but your bank account sure can.
I love this so much more! I do like the academia style but I would get depressed being surrounded constantly by such dark colors. What you have created is very special.
I am so glad that you left all the trim in blue! Perhaps find a contrasting thin velvet ribbon to attach to the sconce's shades. The room looks very classy, Sarah. You’ve done a fantastic job.
the velvet ribbon on the lampshades and perhaps the same color of fabric band on the window seat curtains for continuity. I would leave the pillars as they are to not break up the space.
I think it's all about how you do dark academia. When I did my basement in was sort of an homage to coffee shops and bookstores that fit that sort of vibe. So, a black wall where my coffee station is, dark walnut woods, warm copper and amber accents, and a splash of cobalt blue glass (but sparingly). It's still one of my favorites in the house. The process of how you did your room was interesting. However, I never got the dark academia vibe from the color choices that were made. I am glad you switched. Lighter, brighter colors seem to fit your aesthetic better.
Yeah I never got dark academia vibes from that room. Plus the 90’s sponge paint look on the walls. Her home is very pretty but missed the mark on this room.
The biggest issue with decorating to a trend is the inauthenticity of it all. Once you have to buy books by the yard or items to fill up the room that you wouldn’t normally own it’s a stage set and not a home.
I have had the European look for 25 years throughout our whole house and landscape outside. I did not follow the Tuscan era nor the Farm House era. I love our home every single day. Never tire! Guest, young and old, LOVE and we get endless complements! I can truly say it’s timeless.
And there is the difference. I can stand when designers/decorators encourage following trends. You hone and style like mine works and endures because it was curated over time and it's who we are. It's not forced.
I love the light color so much better! It somehow makes all the other furnishings and decor look pretty and more inviting. I definitely would want to spend time in this room!
This is my favorite version of this room yet! For the curtains you could add a ban of the darker color in the curtain or a matching color to trim to add length would be very pretty.
Many of the walls in our home are a light color and the main reason for that is my need for a lighter feel due to getting depressed when things are dark. We even changed houses so I could experience larger, more light filled rooms and it really helped. I love the new look!
Rather than lengthening the drapes by the window seat, I would loosely tie them back so they would hit at the top of the window bench where the seat cushion rests. The lovely swag will frame that feature, it will look intentional and complement but not compete with the window drapes. I would definitely not paint the columns the trim color but keep them as is. They're an architectural, structural look element so think they're good being different from the trimwork. It'd be a lot a blue and especially standing in the dining area looking toward the living room, it'd really dominate and break up the view toward that room and window. There's no awkward break in paint colors and think they're pretty blending in more with the walls. It's very airy, fresh and visually open now between the spaces.
I think it’s a personal thing. Some love the enclosed feel of dark walls, others like me need light or we feel depressed. Fortunately we can what ever we like .
@@flowerpower3618 Yes, you’re probably right. My niece says my living room feels like a warm hug. But that would probably feel claustrophobic to some people.
I love cream with brass. I think that it's rich. I am so happy that beigh is coming back. It's richer to me. I think that the blue trim and windows are very distracting. It adds many lines and is distracting from the restful space that you're adding. Your couch is the star in your new space. It's beautiful and I love it. Colby is the perfect match for you and you are blessed that he will do things for you. He is very talented and always does a great job. He doesn't go unnoticed.
Love the room in the lighter color. Pleated lampshades would be nice. The curtains by the window seat are lovely. The light wall color really makes your antique furniture pieces pop and show all their beautiful details. Great job on the room, have a lovely weekend.
Yes, turn everything into cheery, happy, light and bright! It’s a happy vibe!! The room opens up instantly with light colors! Dark academia is gloomy and heavy! It makes your space feel like a sad dark cave! Glad you are turning your space into a happy home!! 🎉
Your comments about trends and classics is so right! I notice most women I know incorporate trends into their wardrobe well - choosing a small handful of what's trendy when it works with their style - but when it comes to our homes we jump in the deep end lol Love the dark trim w/ light walls. Light academia is a best of both worlds approach and so livable. imo
Hi Sarah!❤ I wouldn’t paint the pillars… I think they look great as is. Love everything you do! You have been such an inspiration to me! Love your elegant style, and that you’re not afraid to try new things and change things up. I also have a childhood piano that was my mother’s.. I think I will paint mine a white/cream color after seeing yours!!
Love the changes you’ve made. For the drapes, I’d chose a fabric in the exact same color and weight as the drapes but put a decorative tassel trim on the seam and mirror it on the top hem below the header.
I love the pillars as they are…..very classic! I really love the lighter walls…..such a beautiful color. Pleated lampshades would be so pretty on your sconces. I also love the window treatment on each side of your window seat. Looks like a cozy place to curl up and read a book.
Love the walls lighter, but would paint the ceiling molding in same color. You should have a look out for a corner cabinet instead of the blue shelves you have. A brown one with some details and partial glass doors would be nice. Love everything and all your videos 😊💞
Hi, I love your style! My home is similar in style. My suggestions are to leave the pillars the same color or your eyes will get caught on them instead of being seamless from room to room. I would get cream lamps shades (or paint them!)and I would push the settee back closer to the wall. You could get a thinner taller table if you don’t want it hugging the wall but I wouldn’t leave enough room to walk behind it. I would also put your cloches in descending order from the right side of the piano and put a lovely piece of art above it! I personally think the curtain length is fine because it’s a nook, but lengthen them if that is what you like! I’m also thinking of lightening some of my walls, some are blue and the other accessible beige! Love your content, thank for sharing and inspiring the rest of us!
So glad you have changed the wall color. The trend of color drenching never made sense for losing the accent of molding in a room. The moldings can be the jewelry of the room. It defines the space. I admit that I lean into the more traditional style of decor. It’s timeless.
Wow- can’t believe how much brighter and full of sunshine the new paint color did! Love the material panels around the window bench-makes you want to grab a book and settle in to read for hours! Love the bowl of sweet pictures of your Mother when she was young. In our last home, we found beans from a 200 year old home and put them up on the living room ceiling- loved them but it did make the room feel darker- something to consider since you mentioned doing ceiling beams. Love everything about your new light academia living room- Thankyou for sharing!!❤😊
Your husband must have the patience of a saint for how often you change things! I do prefer the walls lighter though! I feel like a longer bar going all the way across would look less awkward for the window seat curtains but I definitely think they make the window seat more cozy.😊😊
My mom had the most beautiful coffee colored walls in our living room with cream trim around windows and moldings. One fireplace corner had a Irish beige linen sectional with a round blond wood table. The other primary seating area had a Chinese red brocade fringed and tufted couch with two teal brocade chairs. She was ahead of her time. The room was lovely with two 9 ft windows with beige drapes. She slipcovered the red couch in the summer with a white with 50s print slipcover. I love coffee walls. My daughter had to move out of WA state, depression bigtime from the weather.
I love that you kept the trimwork and mouldings blue. It gives the room so much depth and I think it is truly charming. As always you have gorgeous taste Sarah!
Love it! And, I’d leave the pillars. Also, the push button light switches brings me back to my childhood home ❤. The wooden tray with pictures of your mother is a brilliant idea! I may need to copy that one. My mom, aka best friend, has been gone for 13 years! I miss her every day. However, I look forward to being with her again. This time will be forever 😊.
The towel bars as rods is brilliant! I'm obsessed with your coffee table and am on the hunt for one for my space. Thank you for your gentle spirit, soothing voice and sharing your decorating skills and gifts with us. I appreciate you!
I too have walls in Accessible Beige with Alabaster trim, doors, and cabinetry. My home is very neutral which allows me to change the colors of my accessories anytime the mood hits: throw pillows, throw blankets, dinner napkins on my table, art prints that I can print myself, book colors, dish towels, etc. Right now I’m using rust and cream pillows, rust plaid throws, etc. It is very cozy in my home. I really enjoy my thrifted brass candle holders with battery tapered candles all year long.
Must be something in the air! I just painted my deep teal "Antigua" livingroom a nice white Alabaster and I am so happy with the room. Your livingroom is gorgeous ♥
I love the dark academia look , and painted my entry dark charcoal, but you made such a good point about the cloudiness outside. 😩Our winters are very cloudy and my mood is so impacted by the lack of sunshine I am really considering lightening it up now. ❤ Oh and lengthening the curtains with ruffles and trim and adding beams will be perfect for the more cottagey look with the blue trim and white walls 😍
I would suggest beginning to take vitamin D3 for a couple months and see if it makes a difference. It totally helps me in the winter. My doctor prescribed 2,000 units in the summer, since I do a lot of gardening and 4,000 units in the winter.
Such a comforting lovely room. Two ideas: (1) a rectangular antique mirror would look nice on the wall over the piano, reflect light and dimension, enhance the reminiscent vibe, and break up the different shades of white (2) you can buy carved, ornate accents made of wood, like a branch with leaves, paint those blue, then affix them to the side of the posts you wanted a touch of blue on.
For the drapes on the window seat, put a panel of complimentary fabric in the bottom to lengthen them to the floor! Maybe use some of the access fabric of your other drapes or something velvet or linen like!
I was thinking the exact same thing. As a color block or two, incorporate with the color of the trim. But a very tactile texture like velvet or velveteen would be very nice.
I truly am someone who does not follow trends. For myself and my home, I don’t enjoy decorating, it stresses me out. The upkeep, the dusting, the storing, etc. I have always been “woods and whites” and in the most simple way possible. BUT - just like non-painters love to observe the natural talents of artists, even when we have no desire to try our own hand at it - I love following your channel just to see what you are doing. So talented! And you clearly have a passion for this! I remember finding your channel back when my youngest was a newborn in 2019, and holding him while he slept and just watching you do your thing. What a talent!
Dark Academia is truly a trend you can get tired of quickly. It does “swallow” everything in your room. And it even feels like it is “swallowing” me. Can get depressing for me. By the way, I love the change you made! Your room looks ALIVE now 💙
Sarah, you are so authentic and true to yourself. I couldn't believe when you were painting your room the dark academia color because it was so pretty before . Then when I saw you with a paint roller in your hand again and now painting over the dark color I just had to grin. The Accessible Gray is so pretty and looks like you. The light Academia suits you and your home.
I love this room. The lighter walls let the other things in the room shine. The dark walls were the first thing I noticed each time I saw this room. I noticed in the picture of your mom a doll...is that the one you have now? Just beautiful!
I love what you’ve done and the lighter color of the walls looks so much more inviting and luxurious. My only suggestion is with the cloches on the top of the piano. I would reverse the order, from high to low, starting from the other side because the way they are now, they direct the eye to the corner instead of into the room. I’m looking at this that the way I do my painting compositions, so the eye is always moving either around the perimeter of a painting or into the center. There is no reason to direct the eye to the corner of the room, which is highlighting that it lacks color in that corner.
Wow! I love the lighter look in your living room. You have convinced me... Light academia is the way to go. I love the academia look but the dark, just like you said... Can be very gloomy at times.❤
So beautiful! Loved the dark color, but it was overwhelming and seemed incongruous with the personality of your home. So glad you kept the dark color for the trim. Keep the pillars as they are. The window seat drapes are almost too short to adapt. I suggest not altering those, but find a fabric you love that will be long enough for that spot. So lovely over all! So much appreciate and enjoy your videos, your style, and your gentle heart reflected in your lovely home.
I think you should get the curtains rods that are like a arm that swings out and you could attach them to the wall that’s same height as your curtains rod that would make your curtains longer and you could move them by swinging out the rod
I love the switch to light academia! I like the simplicity of the sconces with the single crystals. That also allows the ornate gold frame below to shine.
I really like the changes. So much more inviting. I would be tempted to paint the trim work between the 2 rooms. I like the idea of a slightly darker shade on the sconce. Something that is closer to the wall color. Maybe add a simple ribbon in the trim color to the shade. The window seat curtains are just a matter of sacrificing the extra panel to be used to lengthen them. You've had a long summer of major house reno. I hope this space comes together and you are able to just sit and enjoy it. Btw I really love the idea of the pics of your mom that you included in the room. What a simple yet wonderful way to remember her.❤
Oh I love light academia! I wondered as a former western Washingtonian how you liked so much dark… I live in Western Washington now. I love your channel and your love for God . ❤
@SheHoldsDearly, I just stumbled into your channel, so I am a new viewer. Quick answers on your questions: 1. Regarding the window seat drapes, I'd go with a coordinating or contrasting fabric rather than fringe. The drop feels too long for fringe which (if correctly proportioned) might bring the eye down. I'd love to go with the neutral fabric you already have on your other drapes to coordinate and make up the drop. 2. As for lamp shades, I like the existing lamp shades on the sconces, and might eliminate them all together on the chandelier. 3. Regarding the pillars, I would also leave them the existing color. Painting them to match your living room trim might 'box in' the living room and chop up the adjoining space. Rather, I'd bring in one more color - a burnt orange perhaps - in pillows, art and rug. A few plants would also add in texture without clutter. Right now, everything is in shades of that blue/green. I think these small touches of a third color might be a great way to change things up without much expense or effort. The room itself is lovely, and I agree about being aware of trends without being ruled by them. Cheers!
Bravo Sarah ! The light creme is beautiful and your living room is so much brighter and full of sun now ! I really did not like the very dark you had before, it was cold, dark, impersonal. I recall writing a comment about it when you went for this “dark academia style” saying it was okay for a picture in a magazine but not functional in real life….. It was a real tolle ! I have been bullied by your readers saying that I was rude (expressing my own opinion apparently) how much they loved it, and if you listen to them it seemed that they all had dark academia style in their home…. I never liked it, and I am glad you changed. I absolutely love your bathroom the way you came up with, and all the decoration you have in your home. Now looking for your Fall decor, then the Christmas ones !
@@SheHoldsDearly yes, our own style is very personal and evolves with time. We might like something esthetically, but realize it is not so comfy, nor for our own personality, and eventually come back to basics. Over time, I defined my own style around the basics, light and neutral, focusing on comfort (I have two feather sofas) cosy lightings, and personal touches (I am a big reader and have tons of my own books, family old paintings, antics, and plants in my sunroom)
Beautifully done! I’ve been nostalgic for Washington lately, but your reminding me of the nine months of rain helps me not fantasize too much about moving back. 😂 I appreciate getting to see both light and dark academia in your home, as I admire both. 😊
Dark academia has nothing to do with dark walls. It has to do with an appreciation for learning. I'm 58 and this has been my natural decor style before it became trendy. I have cream colored walls.
The new wall color really brightens the space up and makes it seem more inviting. The columns are lovely and don't need changing. If you wanted to change up the lampshades an easy update is velvet ribbon (hot glued around the top and bottom) in the pretty slate tile color - pulls off easy if you tire of it. Also you can source fabric or dye and repurpose and old table cloth in the slate for a solid color band at the bottom of the reading nook curtains.
We painted our home's white walls 27 years ago when we did some major remodeling. We went for a taupey off white color because I found stark white to be cold. One year ago, we needed a refresh. I went for the exact same color again. It was meant to be. The only place that differs is our large open kitchen dining area. Light grey and blue crocks from my grandmother, light grey and blue pottery, and blue and white delft tiles have been in my kitchen scape for 50+ years. So when we changed our kitchen cabinets and chose a white quartz with dark blue veining, I asked my designer sister for a wall color, and she suggested a very light grey in this room. When something feels right, it withstands the passage of time, just like the family kitchen ware.
Sarah, been watching you for years now! Love the lighter colour, your furniture and all your thoughtfully collected accessories! My 2 cents would be to paint out the crown moulding and base board to wall colour but with a semi gloss finish and raise the curtain rod so drapes are not on the floor. This will visually heighten the space and bring you from cottage to Manor house. The seating arrangement is bottle necked between the trunk and dresser making it look a bit crowded for such a large room. So happy you painted it lighter, feels like it's breathing again!
Love the changes you made. I just found your channel today, and it was right on time! I am repainting my coastal home and have a central living room with 7 doorways and one window. It is fairly dark. I’m thinking of going light academia (ish), using a lighter blue color on walls, built-ins, windows, trim to bring the room together as right now it feels like a hallway with furniture due to the number of openings. For your window seat curtains, what about a band of a neutral velvet that would coordinate with the print. Make a couple pillows for the window seat to match. I think it would suit the style well. That area has a much more summery feel than the rest of the room, so the velvet might help pull everything together.
I love the new space! You did such a great job transforming it to feel more authentic to you. For the drapes, I would look for a solid color fabric that matches the block printed part of the design and add that at the bottom to get the curtain to your desired length. Then layer fringe over top of the extension panel that matches the cream background of the original curtain to soften the color blocking. That way you are not trying to exactly match a fabric or color.
I respect you for changing your mind! I know it’s not just about trends for you, but happily living in your home with your family as well. This new version will be great, I bet.
I really like the change too Sarah. Lighter and more uplifting ❤️. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. You make it look so effortless to do all that in a day!
Love the light color with the blue trim. I would leave the pillars as they are. You might try taking a picture of your curtain fabric, print it then paper your shades with it. Everything looks great.
I love your new look. Great choice for your home. We must 'try on' colors - like a new outfit to find what looks best for us. There is no other way ,than thru experience. I love the blue trim too.
Last month I was chatting with my Daughter (My Landlord) about changing the color of my 1880 apartment Living Room from Sage Green to BEHR Roman Plaster. I got a sample container of it and I think it will look fabulous. I think the mantle and built in (Both original to the home) will look richer with the lighter color. My Daughter built me a wall length bookcase and I adore it in the room. I thrifted two table lamps that have pleated shades ...I love pleated shades! I love the photos of your mother. Such a sweet way to honor her. Her piano is fabulous! I think fringe at the bottom of the curtains would look lovely.
Another option for the window seat drapes: find a fabric in the same blue as the seat base and add to the bottom of the drapes so it looks intentional, or an alternate option is to match the other drape fabric in the room so you could cut a bit to add to the base or top of the window seat patterned drapes. The room looks wonderful!
I love how it turned out. I recently painted a room quite dark and find myself wanting to redo it. I adore dark moody rooms in photograph, however I don't think I like living in them personally.
I like this room so much better😊nice choice. I never got into the dark academia style. For the wallsconce shades, linen in a linen color. I would not paint the pillars going into the room. I would add an interesting long fringe to the window seat drapes😊nice work!
Although I love color I prefer it more in pieces that can be changed like area rugs, throw pillows and drapes. I thought the dark was beautiful when you completed the room. However, I prefer the new color with the dark trim and now the furnishings pop. As for the block print curtains, I love your cream drapes much better and think two of them placed there are swing arm rods flanking the window with chunky tassel tiebacks would look amazing. Use the block print fabric to cover your big lamp shades and brown velvet ribbon for the small shades on the sconces. It's a very cozy room and that sofa, just beautiful!
The same thing happened to me with my Spring decor last year. I saw LizMarie’s Spring cottage style decor and I bought so many things but I placed the items this year and I really didn’t like it anymore. I preferred more simple, coastal, and an airy vibe. I bought more simple items and included marble, clay and natural elements that made my home feel like a breathe of fresh air! I got so many compliments on it and it truly felt like my own style 🤍
Oh! Sarah so love the new transformation on the color of walls with the trim. Now I know why I find so much inspiration from She Holds Dearly. Love your calming voice, when you speak with confidence in your vision of decorating. See you next week my dear Sarah! ❤️👏🏻
I am so excited that you used Accessible Beige! It’s been one of my favorite paint colors for a while and I am eager to use it in my home. I was okay with the dark academia, but the light feels more true to your style and your home’s style.
It looks so beautiful!! I would add a slight pattern to the shades if you really wanted. They do look lovely as is for now. And maybe a beautiful ruffle at the base of the curtains in a neutral color that blends with the color of the curtains? I would paint the pillars as well. Actually, I don't know that I would, but you have the actual energy to get it done!!! Just awesome!❤❤❤❤🎉
LOVE the lighter wall color! I too live in WA and could never have the darker wall color with our dark days. I feel like your pieces and pretty collections just stand out so much better now instead of blending into the walls. Gorgeous!
I've been enjoying your videos for a few months now and had no idea we lived in the same state! Totally get the PNW mood with paint colors. 😉 Love your style!
I LOVE what you've done in this space as a good "compromise" for the academia look. Now I feel like it's possible for me to attain... I love how dark walls looks in pictures, but it feels too heavy and depressing for me, in my own home. So this feels like a doable design to me! It looks great.
I love this!! I’ve been so inspired by your living room but haven’t pulled the trigger on moody colours myself. Off to obsess about light academia now. 😁
To remedy the curtain situation, you can border the panels with a solid color, using it on the bottom to lengthen and setting off the sides as well. The lamp shades I would keep light and perhaps add some trim at the top and bottom.
@@MWear-x8t I like when trends are things I like because then it's easier for a moment to get that type of stuff. Lol
So, sorry for your lost...
I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds like you gave yourself a breath of fresh air when you needed it. Praying the new look lifts your spirit whenever you walk into the rooms.💖
Very sorry for your loss. But boy, would I have loved to have some of what you gave away!
@@nancymiller4678thank you. Since I can not move the change has lightened my spirit.
@@alyneorleans5018I donated some and sold others. Figured someone would really cherish it.
I totally agree. My last house was totally different from this one in style, size, color and look.
Exactly spot on! Faking interests (botany, books) like why?! Be you and let your space be true to itself too
@@HellCatt0770 please be nicer with your comments. I don’t think she is faking anything.
Thank you!!🤍
I hear what you are saying.
I agree.
I very rarely see another human being, but when I do, the most important thing to me is to be welcoming and kind. xxx
I think your home sounds amazing.
Exactly…
I completely agree… I have never been tempted to follow any trend, decor or fashion. I have my own style, it’s what makes me happy & comfortable. I do make changes but always because of something I love, not because of popularity.
AMEN!!! I like your philosophy!
I love eclectic! Your home sounds amazing.
Thank you!!🤍
I am so glad that you left all the trim in blue! Perhaps find a contrasting thin velvet ribbon to attach to the sconce's shades. The room looks very classy, Sarah. You’ve done a fantastic job.
@@terrizimmerman5297 yes! I agree
Thank you!!🤍
Love the velvet ribbon band idea!
the velvet ribbon on the lampshades and perhaps the same color of fabric band on the window seat curtains for continuity. I would leave the pillars as they are to not break up the space.
I’ve watched you for years. The lighter color makes the room look bigger. I love it.
Thank you!!🤍
I think it's all about how you do dark academia.
That room was never dark academia.
Yeah I never got dark academia vibes from that room. Plus the 90’s sponge paint look on the walls. Her home is very pretty but missed the mark on this room.
@@marydumois4242 agreed!
Your home sounds amazing!
I want to see that basement, sounds amazing 🥰🥰
@@marydumois4242 yes!!
yes personal style is always timeless.

Yes! You said it so well!
I love dark academia in pictures, but in practical living, I need light and airy walls. And I live in the south where the sun shines a lot!
I so understand!
The light walls and bold color on the trim look like colonial Williamsburg. Love it!!
Thank you!!🤍
I love the light color so much better! It somehow makes all the other furnishings and decor look pretty and more inviting. I definitely would want to spend time in this room!
Thank you!!🤍
Leaving the trim was a good compromise. I would add fabric to the TOP of the window seat curtains to lengthen them.
Thank you!!🤍
This is my favorite version of this room yet! For the curtains you could add a ban of the darker color in the curtain or a matching color to trim to add length would be very pretty.
Thank you!!🤍
Many of the walls in our home are a light color and the main reason for that is my need for a lighter feel due to getting depressed when things are dark. We even changed houses so I could experience larger, more light filled rooms and it really helped. I love the new look!
The creamy walls make everything else look better. Happy for you!
Yes, creamy white is warm but clean looking. Not as glaring as bright white
Thank you!!🤍
Oh my gosh, it's one of my new favorite paint colors!!
@@SheHoldsDearly It's luscious!
Thank you!!🤍 SUCH great ideas!!
YES to all of these suggestions!
Ohh noooo
Dark academia is absolutely the best !!
Cozy !!
Love it !!!
Especially in a living room!
So glad to see the lighter colors! Nice mix of cozy and bright.
❤❤❤Love the new color! The dark in my opinion was dreary.
The pillars are perfect the way they are. I’m so happy you moved away from the darkness and into the light.
Sounds like a metaphor
Haha! Thank you!!🤍
LOL
Yes! It shows off all her beautiful things better!
Agree - keep the pillars as they are. Painting them a different colour would look fussy.
I love creamy walls with color trim. It always makes me think of Williamsburg! So classic
Thank you!!🤍
Yes now that is timeless. I’ve been doing colored woodwork for 30 years ! Love it
I love cream with brass.
Thank you!!🤍 Yes, he's a keeper!😂
Love the room in the lighter color. Pleated lampshades would be nice. The curtains by the window seat are lovely. The light wall color really makes your antique furniture pieces pop and show all their beautiful details. Great job on the room, have a lovely weekend.
Thank you!!🤍
Yes, turn everything into cheery, happy, light and bright! It’s a happy vibe!! The room opens up instantly with light colors!
Dark academia is gloomy and heavy! It makes your space feel like a sad dark cave! Glad you are turning your space into a happy home!! 🎉
Your comments about trends and classics is so right! I notice most women I know incorporate trends into their wardrobe well - choosing a small handful of what's trendy when it works with their style - but when it comes to our homes we jump in the deep end lol
Love the dark trim w/ light walls. Light academia is a best of both worlds approach and so livable. imo
Thank you!!🤍
So glad u went light on the walls!! Just lovely. And your FLOORS…..are perfection!! The color is stunning!!❤
Thank you!!🤍
I like this room so much more now that it’s brighter! I say to use the same drapes as the other ones in the room.
Thank you for the idea!
Thank you!!🤍
I love the pillars as they are…..very classic!
Thank you!!🤍
Hi, I love your style!
Thank you!!🤍
Wow- can’t believe how much brighter and full of sunshine the new paint color did!
Thank you for sharing, Marie!
Your husband must have the patience of a saint for how often you change things! I do prefer the walls lighter though! I feel like a longer bar going all the way across would look less awkward for the window seat curtains but I definitely think they make the window seat more cozy.😊😊
Haha, he is wonderful. But, I don't I could get away with so much change, if it wasn't my job. Love your curtain rod idea! Thank you!!🤍
Perfect* wall color.I think this look is so beautiful. It is a look that I could keep for years and never tire of.
Wow, she sounds like quite the designer! I wish I could have seen that room.
That sounds amazing! Yes, I think we are all fighting through the weather here. :(
I love that you kept the trimwork and mouldings blue.
Thank you!!🤍 I'm sorry about your mama, I understand 🥹
Your home sounds ah-mazing!
Oh and lengthening the curtains with ruffles and trim and adding beams will be perfect for the more cottagey look with the blue trim and white walls 😍
I would suggest beginning to take vitamin D3 for a couple months and see if it makes a difference. It totally helps me in the winter. My doctor prescribed 2,000 units in the summer, since I do a lot of gardening and 4,000 units in the winter.
Thank you!!🤍
I agree!
Thank you!!🤍 LOVE these ideas!
If you decide to lengthen the panels with a print fabric (stripe?), you could also use that fabric for the lampshades and some pillows. Looking good!
Thank you!!🤍 Ooo, good idea!
I love that the color of your walls and your trim are in deep contrast with each other, making them a perfect backdrop to all of your decor.❤
Dark Academia is truly a trend you can get tired of quickly. It does “swallow” everything in your room. And it even feels like it is “swallowing” me. Can get depressing for me.
By the way, I love the change you made! Your room looks ALIVE now 💙
Thank you!!🤍
Sarah, you are so authentic and true to yourself. I couldn't believe when you were painting your room the dark academia color because it was so pretty before . Then when I saw you with a paint roller in your hand again and now painting over the dark color I just had to grin. The Accessible Gray is so pretty and looks like you. The light Academia suits you and your home.
Thank you so much!
I love this room. The lighter walls let the other things in the room shine. The dark walls were the first thing I noticed each time I saw this room. I noticed in the picture of your mom a doll...is that the one you have now? Just beautiful!
Thank you!!🤍 It is not the same doll, I think her mother protected it a little when my mother was a toddler. :)
Thank you!!🤍
Watching your videos is like taking a mini-vacation. So relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you ❤
Thank you!!🤍
Crochet bottom on curtains in cream or ivory, possibly with a crochet frill touching floor. Easy to wash if it gets dirty.
Thank you!!🤍 I love this idea!
Yes. Crochet or even macrame. Makes me think of the low country bed canopies.
Thank you!!🤍
I love the switch to light academia! I like the simplicity of the sconces with the single crystals. That also allows the ornate gold frame below to shine.
Thank you!!🤍
Love the towel bars utilized as drape hangers
Thank you!!🤍
I really like the changes. What a simple yet wonderful way to remember her.❤
Thank you!!🤍
Oh I love light academia! I wondered as a former western Washingtonian how you liked so much dark… I live in Western Washington now. I love your channel and your love for God . ❤
Thank you!!🤍
@SheHoldsDearly, I just stumbled into your channel, so I am a new viewer.
It is such a process, isn't it?
Oh my gosh, your house sounds darling!
Love it!! The light walls really allow all your accent pieces and decor to stand out. Also love that you have your mothers piano. So Sweet.
Thank you!!🤍
Loved your old look but enjoy the new just as much. Watching you is such a joy and I ❤ your calmness Sarah.
Thank you, Joleen!
Thank you!!🤍 Yes, there are a few things I still want to change.
I love how you explain your thought process and have such a calm energy in your videos.
❤
Thank you!!🤍
I respect you for changing your mind! I know it’s not just about trends for you, but happily living in your home with your family as well. This new version will be great, I bet.
Thank you, Claire!!🤍 Good to see you!
I really like the change too Sarah. Lighter and more uplifting ❤️. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. You make it look so effortless to do all that in a day!
Thank you!!🤍
Love the light color with the blue trim. I would leave the pillars as they are. You might try taking a picture of your curtain fabric, print it then paper your shades with it. Everything looks great.
Thank you!!🤍
The redo is actually much cozier looking! Love it!
I love your new look. Great choice for your home. We must 'try on' colors - like a new outfit to find what looks best for us. There is no other way ,than thru experience. I love the blue trim too.
The room looks beautiful, warm and inviting. Your seating area is gorgeous!
@@karenstairs8273 that sounds lovely
Your home sounds so lovely!
Thank you!!🤍
I love how it turned out.
Thank you!!🤍
Although I love color I prefer it more in pieces that can be changed like area rugs, throw pillows and drapes.
I love your ideas, Linda! Thank you!!🤍
The same thing happened to me with my Spring decor last year.
Thank you!!🤍
I am so excited that you used Accessible Beige! It’s been one of my favorite paint colors for a while and I am eager to use it in my home. I was okay with the dark academia, but the light feels more true to your style and your home’s style.
Thank you!!🤍
It looks so beautiful and I’m already picturing your holiday decor in the space and getting excited about it!
Thank you!!🤍
It looks so beautiful!!
Thank you!!🤍
LOVE the lighter wall color! I too live in WA and could never have the darker wall color with our dark days. I feel like your pieces and pretty collections just stand out so much better now instead of blending into the walls. Gorgeous!
Thank you!!🤍
I've been enjoying your videos for a few months now and had no idea we lived in the same state!
So beautiful! I love this! Much cozier and light 💓
PS: I loved the before, too! This updated look feels more like a home
Thank you!!🤍
I love the new paint color and curtains by the window seat!! Beautiful!
