  • A little piece of Rochester Disc Golf history... Here is the 1999 PDGA Worlds Championship at the Chili Disc Golf Course. It's amazing to see the course in this video compared to what it looks like today.
    Check out the course now, 14 years later!
    • Rochester Disc Golf - ...
    The video has several player interviews, but focuses mainly on the final round held at the Chili Disc Golf Course. The final round course is one of the most unique courses in the country featuring silos, windmills, and lots of wind. Ken Climo, Ron Russell, Barry Schultz, and Scott Stokely round out the top four players. This is the video that highlights Ron Russell's victory over 9-Time Consecutive Champ Ken Climo. It chronicles a unique moment in Disc Golf. Hosted by John Houck.
    About the course:
    The Chili DGC was built in 1995. After knocking on many doors, Dave Thomas contacted Chili Recreation Director Ron Fodge, who recommended a piece of Town property, once an old farm owned by the Baker family, as an appropriate site. The course was designed by Royce Racinowski, and soon fairways were cut out of the fields. To enhance the relatively open course, elevated tees and pins were constructed, along with many interesting obstacles. Many trees were planted, an activity that continues to this day. The course has been lovingly enhanced and beautified over the years by countless hours of labor by Ron Fodge, Kathy Freitas and members of the Chili Disc Golf Club.

    I was there in 1999 and even got to caddie for Steady Ed himself. It was an amazing experience. This was really what got me into Disc Golf to begin with. Thanks for posting this. It's neat to see my name in the credits too.

    That was really great to watch. Great tournament and great presentation for 1999. Those guys could really throw. Glad to see that the Champ and Barry are still playing regularly and still winning. Thanks for uploading the video.

    I didn't discover disc golf until I was 19 in 1998. Still love it to this day. And love watching these old videos as well as all the new ones out.

    Thank you for posting this. I played at Chili DGC and Ellison between 1998 - 2002 before moving away. Going to try and play the new Ellison and Parma this summer. Schultz getting a 3 on 911 is still sick, even 16 years later. It was cool to watch footage of the 2014 RFDO and see how this course has matured. And yeah - good call on Amy Bekken.

    What a great video. Terrific coverage and commentary. Disc golf has amazing sportsmanship 46:00. Wish I had discovered the sport earlier on.

    Great video! Better production then most disc golf videos out there. Love the interviews and filming. Scoring pop up are always nice but the commentators did a great job with score updates.

    Amazing how high Ken is sporting those pants. Maybe that's why he's always so uptight.

    I have one of the Giant Tosser Saucers! It was given to me by ex-world Champion Peter Bowie.
    What a terrific sportsman The Champ is! It must have been awful to be unable to catch Ron, and he accepted defeat very gracefully indeed.
    Barry was instantly recognisable, and he played out of his skin - what a fantastic performance.
    I had never seen Stokely throw, except a tin animated GIF of his world record throw back in the early days of the Internet.
    Thanks for bringing us this great video!

    In Rochester for training at Kodak in May `99. Played the "World's Biggest" tournament with the locals on this course a few months ahead of the worlds. Great place, but yeah, my pictures look a lot different than today's. Working in Buffalo next month - going to try to get back there and play around the trees that now seem to dominate..

    I had no idea how young Stokely was. Biggest surprise of it all to me only 5:30 into the video. He was only 29 in 99? So he'd barely be into his mid-40s. Wow. The game really lost a legend to shoulder injuries... I didn't realize how much future he had in front of him when he left the game.

    • @Naegimaggu
      @Naegimaggu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking at him throwing here with such explosive speed and at times barely any follow up must be really taxing on his joints and what not. I'm not criticizing his skills, he is obviously a very good player, but it doesn't look very smooth especially if you compare it to modern players, not too surprised that he would develop those injuries later. Although I guess he did keep developing his technique, his clinics are some of my favourites to watch and his throw does look a lot smoother in his advanced years.

    Ron was only in prime for 4yrs..and in those healthy 4. He was just as good as climo back then.
    Even calm Todd had a year he was just better than the rest. Although Barry won championships, he was never considered the best at game at moment, like Ron.
    Don't get me wrong. U say Barry in this sport, they know who your talking about.
    Hes deadly. Top 10 all time.

    Lol the swedes throw farther? Like what? 30ft maybe or maybe not at all. Scott Stokely actually held the distance world record at the time as an American. Disc golf will always be an American dominated sport. Still to this day has no European Won a World title. Lol “so putting doesn’t matter as much”

    • @Naegimaggu
      @Naegimaggu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He was saying that the contribution of your putting skill to your overall score is less with longer holes which is pretty much a mathematical fact; if you have longer holes, the players will be throwing more shots that are not putts. Perhaps there's better ways he could have said it, but he is also not a native speaker and strictly speaking his statement is true.
