We learned a lot from this early production of disc golf. At the time it was the largest and best endeavor. It was picked up and shown on TV across the U.S. and even had airings in Canada, Mexico, Europe and if I remember correctly, Japan. The tournament was a great success. The first PDGA worlds Tom Monroe and I ran in 1983 was a great one and this Worlds in 1993 sat a new standard for years to come.

Great to see this old footage.........& wow has the game changed over the years. One of the best changes is the fact that we have par 4's & 5's now, instead of everything being a 3.......
Yes, being a newer viewer to the game I was unaware that these were the rules at the time of this Championship. It certainly seems like a step in the right direction to have some different pars, as when the commentator mentioned the longest hole being 800+ feet that is kind of a silly distance for a par 3, especially with early '90 discs. There are a handful of guys who could comfortably cover 800 feet in 2 shots now, with the 2nd being a shorter approach, and have a realistic par chance, but even with a 600 foot drive you're looking at a 200 foot throw in for birdie? that's just silly. Birdies are meant to be difficult, but it should be due to course design making things difficult if you're slightly off line, not just purely due to impossible distance.
Thought I'd lose it with the 2nd guy in grand masters that held his 4 disc disc bag while wearing high white socks and penny loafers and nearly parks a roller. Priceless!!!

Wow. I met Tom Monroe out at George Ward park back in October. I didn’t know who he was at the time but he sold me some discs. After 9 holes I told him I wasn’t getting the flight I was expecting out of the Katana. He gave me some pointers that changed my opinion on that disc immediately and now its my go to distance driver for wide open shots. I can’t wait to go back to Birmingham and talk with him again.
I just met Tom today at Brahan Springs in Huntsville and bought two discs from him, the firebird and the boss
You Tube is now the only place to view disc golf. I wish some television sports network would cover a few events every year. With the growth of disc golf, one would think televised events would be able to generate as much interest as some of the silly programming sports networks have to fill up air space.
Watching this has been awesome! The commentator was great! There's a few times that you can hear his echo live. The footage & audio was cut up & edited together for this video, but all the commentary was live! We need more like this today!!!
Went to high school with Mitch McClellan's nephew, hell of a disc golfer. Runs in the family.
Mitch and I played base ball together in the late 70's about when Ed Headrick and Jeff Homburg did the front 9 at N.E Lions park in 1977

Everything inside the circle was "30to35 feet". It took one woman 6 small steps to walk off her "35 footer". A small child could estimate distance better.

Anyone know when they first played Par 4s in Disc Golf? It's crazy to think of a 800 foot hole has a par 3 and then to get a 4 and it be a bogey.

That’s the only time I’ve ever seen anyone else “horseshoe” putt other than myself. So crazy. Really sweet to see all of this back in the day and how much it’s evolved over the years. Thank god the commentary isn’t so bland nowadays. It was getting a bit rough to listen to
