As a guy in my mid-50's I just took up playing the bass 9 months ago. I am taking lessons and loving learning bass and my fave songs from eh 70's-90's. As I have ventured into pedals for fun, my only other is the Aftershock by Source Audio. My instructor recommended it. WOW! What fun! That thing is amazing! Then he and my awesome sales guy at Sweetwater referred me to this pedal when I got interested in some delay and other effects. WOW! I simply love the sounds I heard on other reviews. But, this review by Mark! Probably some of the very best gear review I have watched, and that includes all of the gun gear vids I have watched over the years. So, after watching this, I made the instant purchase! My Artifakt is due here in three days and I can't wait to have fun with it! New subber to the channel! Thank you Mark!
Source Audio is a company I'm always rooting for. I love that they've done this. If they continue to put out new/niche/can be weird pedals, I think they will find increased success. They are great algo creators and their pedals always sound great. Great job, Mark!
They absolutely deserve more love. We got companies like JHS, who I have nothing against, in the top 5 but yet companies like Source Audio are still scraping by when they obviously release superior product.
I agree..A lot of bang for your buck..This is Chase Bliss territory and just as feature packed..It's made me change my mind to get this pedal instead of the Onward..
I wish there was a tape stop toggle where if you step on a foot switch, the tape would spin down and stop, then spin back up next time you hit the switch. Loving the sounds on these. First time hearing of Source Audio.
Your commitment to delivering valuable content is remarkable.. Keep up the fantastic work! -- "Success is not given; it's earned through dedication and determination.."
Really nice work Mark. I’m always on the fence with these kind of pedals that can be used in very select circumstances but I have to say this pedal has a wide range of use. Love my chase bliss generation loss but I always struggle to find real case uses for it. This pedal is different has some beautiful tones, I was surprised with the reverb, really cool. I’d like to think Kurt Cobaine would have used this pedal, some Seattle grunge to this.
Damn these chorusy and flangery sounds I'm looking for. Don't understand I'll have to look into a lo-fi pedal to get this modulation ! Thanks for the demo
Awesome sound (especially the bass)! Could you give us an insight of how you got this bass sound on bass (I'm always struggling to get this kind of sound). Cheers from France
Great video! Your demo helped me get a good sense of this pedal more than other videos Do you think this pedal can go in the end of a signal chain? I want to use amp reverb and replace my reverb pedal with this
Hey Mark. Just watching the video right now. What's the headroom like on this pedal. Will it handle a powerful drive pedal in front of it without distorting the signal coming out of the Artifakt?
Where do you think it would be best to place this pedal in a signal chain? Before or after drives? Before or after other delays and time-based fx? Or just experiment and see what works as usual?
We always recommend experimentation, there are no wrong answers when it comes to the order of the signal chain. That said, if I had to make a choice, I would put Artifakt after overdrive and modulation effects, but before delay and reverb.
Yep. This is one of those instant buy situations (where you just ran out of money to instant buy). Is there another pedal out there like this? Kind of wild to think that this hasn’t already been thought of, feels almost obvious now that it’s here. I guess maaaybe elements of the Chroma Console but this has way more tweakability?
Hope not..Chase Bliss are in danger of bringing out variations of Mood continuing with Onward..This stamps all over Onward in terms of variation and variety.. I'm getting this..And I love my Mood 2 btw..
Onward isn’t a variation on MOOD though. It’s a mode from now defunct CooperFX’s Outward, reimagined with a bunch of new features. And this is an entirely different device than onward
@@markjohnstonofficial Oh yes I'm aware it's a spin off of Outward pedals..And this is a different pedal..I was talking more in terms of variation etc..I don't know what it is about Onward but something is holding me back..whereas Artifakt got me excited just like Mood 2,and I always go with my gut instincts, plus for my set up I think Artifakt will give me more variety sound and texture wise than Onward..both great pedals though..
I love Source Audio.. but at $350 I’m gonna pass. Chroma Console is only $50 more than this. Woulda been a winner at $250. Harsh reality. Sounds cool though!
I only have one because of my Sweetwater gear card through financing :P otherwise ya, price is steep. I feel it with Source Audio stuff, Chase Bliss stuff, and Gamechanger stuff, I seem to want everything those companies make, but obviously can't afford it :/
@@skepticalbystander I actually ended up buying one and I LOVE IT. It does way more than just crackly lofi stuff… it’s my main tremolo pedal now, among other stuff like vibrato, and doubling. It’s so great!
I have an HX One which is priced similarly. When you factor in the Neuro editor, this pedal can do wayyy more in depth lofi tones than the Line6. The Tape Eater lofi effect is the only one on par with this pedal, and even then it only has a few parameters you can control. Source Audio let's you basically design your own pedal from scratch.
finally. get of your asses developers. only last year somebody tried me to sell their new innovative shimmer reverb. yaawn. it so cool what you can put together for free in vcv/cardinal a long those lofi lines… only the difficulty getting that sound in apedal keeps that market going. hope digital comes back down to sane levels. below 200. so bravo source audio: there are two pedals i can spot immediateley in any recording: microcosm and soundblox multiwave distortion… true innovation. keep at it! and dont make me buy extra boxes to access features. it sucks. i wont.

I've only made it to the intro section and I had to pop int to the comments to say: that bass tone! Seriously amazing.
My best friend works for them as Brand Manager and I couldn’t me more proud of how this sounds, hope to see more from source audio

Wait. How many CBA pedals are behind your head…..
I have their eq2 and still swear by it.

Only at the start of this video and maybe it’ll be mentioned somewhere but damn I need to know how that bass tone is accomplished from the intro song!
My normal bass rig reprocessed through Artifakt on ladder mode
@@markjohnstonofficialthank you!
what are other comparable pedals that can do lo fi? Digging this one, but wondering what else is out there.
Hey Mark. Just watching the video right now. What's the headroom like on this pedal. Will it handle a powerful drive pedal in front of it without distorting the signal coming out of the Artifakt?
I ramped by recorded line level bass and drums through this without issue so I'd say the headroom is pretty solid

Chase bliss has a few pedals in a similar space, though they kind of focus on one sound per pedal, where this seems like a multi effect.
@@michaelscottpettis mmm yeah sorry I should’ve been clearer, I meant is there another lo-fi multi effect pedal out there.

It's 350.00, Hard Pass! If it was 250.00 I would entertain getting it. But for 350.00 you can get a pedal with far more options than just lo-fi.

just a toy for a lone musician, it's useless for playing in a band
