Gearing up for Christmas, it's been really handy to whip out a bunch of personalised Christmas ornaments for gifts. I even made a Christmas themed Necron for a friend who is obsessed with them. It's stuff like that, you just can't buy from the shops. Not to mention adding a personal flare makes all the difference.

That's really clever to personalise gifts. That's giving me some ideas for my friends :)

For me it all comes down to the models themselves, I got a 3d printer first and then started playing games with miniatures, I think the onus is on a company like Games Workshop to provide a product thats worth buying, I'm 3d printing a death korps of krieg army to play with my friends, i'm 3d printing it because i found sculpts online that i liked better.
I think the discussion around sprues is very important actually, I recently assembled a Games Workshop sentinel and actually missed a piece because it was not obvious and the sprues did nothing to guide me.
I also build alot of model tanks, and despite having a printer i still buy Tamia models because they are superior to what i feel like i can find available for my 3d printer.
they figured out with software along time ago that the way to stop piracy was to make things affordable and accessible, its the same thing here, if companies like Games Workshop want to survive into the future they need to innovate on the business model. I love my local hobby store and my 3d printer means i spend way more money on paint with them, there are ways to move forward where everyone gets to have a sustainable business and consumers have ultimate choice. thank you for coming to my TED talk

Benjlin always appreciate a TED talk comment. Thanks for sharing your experience.
It'll be interesting what GW and other model companies do with the rise in popularity of 3d printing. Makes me think about Blockbuster and Netflix.
      Happy Hobbying :)

@@Habes yeah it will be interesting to see what they do, i think the business model that might make sense would be marketplace + licensing, right now if I buy some stl's off the open internet, they don't get a cut, the seller lives in perpetual fear of getting a cease and desist, and I don't know if i'm buying a quality product.
all three of these products can be "solved" with a curated marketplace, games workshop can take a cut, artists don't have to worry about getting a take down, or sacrificing their vision to ensure legal distinctness, and if they actually vet the models on the store as a consumer i know i'm getting something quality. You could even then potentially have a premium service offered by the stores to print models for you at a substantial markup.

I have never played a tabletop game, I was always into RPG games from 1st Edition D&D in the early 80's, gave up in my late teens when girls became more interesting. Kinda got back into it in my stonner days, but again it all got boxed away. I found my old box of paints and mini's during covid and got back into painting, but the cost of GW products really put me off. I bought a printer and man I have never looked back, I now own FAR too many paints and hobby bits, have cabinets full of models and still never played a game. Recently backed a kickstarter skirmish game, and looked into One Page Rules.
I recently printed 2 8" tall 'Titan' models from less than one bottle of resin, the stl's cost me under $10, dread to think how much GW would have charged me.

My hobbies include tabletop gaming, sci-fi design/art/architecture dioramas (think like trains but cooler), 'dollhouses'/terrain... Stuff like that. Currently i build stuff out of dollar store things, popsicle sticks, paper, & garbage. My "pile of shame" is *not* understood by anyone else, i just look like a hoarder. :/ I want to say getting a 3d printer would help, buuuuut it might not.

Ah man the Australia tax on GW products...
I got a cheap printer and wash/cure station off FB marketplace, found some nicer proxies for a marine chaplain and emperors champion and the printer has almost paid itself off.

I dont understand stuff like this.
3D Printing is one of the reasons GW becomes less creative, why should GW put a lot of effort in there Models just that others can print them themselve.
Imagine u doin a art projekt and someone else just print ur art without any payment and just sell it as there own.
Plus yes this hobby is expensive but the hobby is not buying stuff but rather play Warhammer, u dont have to pay 200$ a month on miniatures maybe get one box or two for the month, see it as a kind of reward for youself.
Use ur money that u dont need for any other projects ur working on, go on the last weekend befor payment on shopping tour to make sure u dont spend money that u might need otherwise.
Also its there fcking copyright, if you print stuff not from GW or any other companie go for it, but directly printing printing GW modells is still copyright infringment.
And if u wanna play with ur custom modells expect that ur oponent will say no that he wont allow these modells.
I cant go to a soccer match with a fcking lacrosse ball expect backlash.
The spruce part where the parts are kinda random is simply for the fact, to fit more pieces in lesser spruces.
U can also easily undo ur painting or just paint over it.
    Damaging or losing a piece.
If u really care for ur money, u dont lose a piece or just damage a miniature or a piece, if the piece slips out of ur hand, stop everything else and look for it and if you work with a piece that can be easily damaged u have to be very carefull with ur knifes or u hand movement.

GW being less creative because of 3d printers is just pure nonsense. The design is the entirety of GWs product they can never afford to become less creative with them (and they never have, no matter if you like art style oir material changes or not) the actual game can be played with coloured balls or pegs the figurines serve no purpose to the game.
GW need only directly sell modular printable designs to negate the vast majority of piracy - people are paying a small fortune for laser scanned sets on 3d printing sites you enly ever see individal parts for free. Frankly tuing your printer choosing the right resins and the clean-up is going to ensure theres a market for GWs cast parts no matter how many want to just pay a one time fee for each unit and then print copies or custom variations.
Your argument against customs is frankly insane, they - just like the official models - only serve to make make the hobby more fun, personal and visually appealing while having zero impact on play. No-ones talking about making illegal combinations of unit and equipment as a custom print to actually play with. Refusal to allow customs is only in GW interst not anyone elses.

Theirs a lot to think about in that. I haven’t looked to much into 3d scanning but it’s an interesting idea. 😁

      Thanks for the comment!
Glad you enjoy buying your models.
I actually just focus on the painting side of the hobby and don’t actually play 40k or AoS.
So in the video I was just sharing some reasons why I prefer to print rather than buy models but that might not be for everyone.
      All the best 😁
