This video gave me the confidence to take my catalytic converter out today.. I did learn a better way to get those back 3 bolts out.. I just took a angle grinder and cut the nuts off.. hope that helps.. saved alot of time.. since the bolts and nuts get replaced anyways... the top bolt doesn't have much room for the angle grinder.. just use a blade that is ground down smaller so you don't cut the drive shaft or the underbody heat shield.. hope this helps.. oh, and I just unclipped the O2 sensors and left them on.. that way I didn't twist them all up..
Just replace the catalytic converter yesterday for my 2007 Honda crv with 200k miles. Much straight forward than I expected. One concern is how to make sure no leak. I smell some odor and worry about the carbon monoxide. I appreciate if anyone has some experience for this. Thanks
@@senliangpan338 I used an after market cat and I torque them to specs 16 pounds..the front gasket would leak and I smelled the fumes in the car .. I can hear a leak.. so I adjusted the bolts little by little, as I loosen them the front flange came down some and it sealed the gasket and it stopped leaking.. apparently the bends are not the same as the original and it doesn’t sit the same..so you might want to try that it worked for me ..

I know it's unrelated but is that dewalt impact wrench a mid-torque 1/2 or 3/8ths? I just got a p0420 and I've been waiting to get an impact to work on my car. Thanks!

Just replaced my 2007 Honda CRV CATALYTIC CONVERTER YESTERDAY. much quicker than I thought. I smell something burning issues after putting back. I worry about the carbon monoxide issue if seal doesn't go well. Do you have any tricks? My check engine light is still on. Thanks for your opinion.
Sorry not sure I can be of much help. Just check that everything’s bolted down tightly and that you used all the seals and that your sensors are screwed back in securely.
Thanks for replying. After a couple of days, smells disappeared. I bet the Penetrator lubricant burn out. Also check engine signal automatically disappeared without any extra touch. Emissions test (CT) passed last week. Total cost: catalytic converter 138$ (Amazon). Tools and others ~50$ Dealer/ car shop quote 2800/1200$. Big savings and easier than expected. Thanks for sharing your informative video. I am an early stage amateur for car maintenance.
Excellent presentation. I changed my honda CRV2005 Catalytic converter from shop and cost 1100 dollars. But instalation of after market cat some noise is coming. It is now 212000 km. I am expecting another 100000 km . But see the video I am very excited to replace my self. Thank a lot . Would you please let me know why some noise is coming when accelerate the gas.
If someone has this problem too make sure you change the “gasket donut”. Never reuse the old one no matter what. If your heat shield on the cat is rusted to crap already just completely remove it, It’s pointless in cold states. This will help with the shaking and noises. Stores also sell the high heat sealers for the gasket donut that you can rub around it before you install.
Thanks for posting. Ours was stolen yesterday and an initial quote was $2,500 (parts/labor) for an aftermarket one from AutoZone or O'Reilly's. I'll see what other options we have.
Haha! That's funny. Someone stole my converter on our 2009 and the first time I fired it up I heard that Honda Thunder. You've heard of Chevy Thunder, right? I heard that four-cylinder Honda Thunder! It was pretty annoying.
Gday mate, just to save you some future pain, use an Impact wrench not the Impact driver on the bolt and nuts. I stripped the guts out of a driver years ago when I was too lazy to go and get my Impact wrench. The driver WILL eventually let go internally brother.
Thx for the video. Have you had any CEL to come on? A couple of reviews from amazon states that their ck eng lite came within a week of driving it with this magnaflow cat on a Honda Element, but then again, after reading their reviews, it could easily be bcoz both had INJEN intake system. I ordered mine today for my E, and 2 new Denso Oxygen sensors. I have 215k so I'm not putting my oem sensors back.
I bought my converter on rock auto. They sent the wrong gaskets, so I had to buy them from autozone. I took it to get the test, and it passed. I live in California.
I did it by hand and have done it before. Now doing a 2008 also the bolt was so rusted that the head snapped off with little torque. Generally cars are made as cheaply as possible with cheap metal.
900 bucks still very expensive!! OEM around 1600+150 cores! I bought a 2007 Honda CR-V with 250,000 miles last year, I went to smog check, the guy said My cata is a aftermarket one! There was a problem the car easily has engine light on P0139 O2 sensor slow! I changed new oem one 5months the same engine light on again. I think the main problem is the cata. I am thinking change it or ignore it. I already spent $2500 to tune it up and fix problems!

Good job, but I would have installed new O2 sensors while under there.
Fantastic job sir thank you, I will be replacing the cat on my 2007 Honda CR-V with 333555 miles on it..

Can you just clean the old cat? I read some post that you can soak it in paint thinner in a tub overnight then blast it with dawn dish soap and water.
Did you go with the federal or California cat? And what is the update on how it’s been working?

@@senliangpan338 Congrats on doing it yourself. It feels good to do it yourself and save some major dough.
@senliangpan338 could you provide the link from Amazon? Is this one also for California?
Great video. Did you have to remove any bottom plate to gain access to the exhaust manifold side of the catalytic converter?
No you don't need to remove anything.

Dang. I'm in the wrong business.
Mine is stolen here at Montreal and I plan to put a straight pipe instead of a cat!
The hotexaust cat works in CA? Just got mine stolen today.
That is a nice video
I am interested on buying your old catalytic
How much would you give me for it?
250 and shipping fee
You need the heat shields, otherwise you will not have the famous Honda Heat shield rattle. Egads, man!

Is the exhaust system still OEM from 2008?
I think so but we bought it used.
Good job with the details there!!!.

No it has been running fine without any lights coming on. Thanks for watching.
Anyone know what size the bolts to the catalytic converter are mine got stolen and my new cat didn’t come with new bolts.
I know it's a late reply but 10X1.25mm. Not sure of the exact length but 30 or 35mm should do. The spring bolts are 8X1.25mm.

You did it correct by hand cuz if you use the impact driver you have a high chance you might snap the head off. Then you have bigger problems.
