Senri is right up there with the best. At one time the youngest person on the Drummer World website as one of the top 500 drummers in the world. Of course Yoyika is now that person. I love this performance! Thank you for this reaction!

Besides that, I've been playing everything she has on Spotify (under Senri and Kiyosen) for a while now, some absolute killer tracks. Didn't even know I was a fusion guy.

When you talk of the arc made with Senri's right arm I have seen this before with another Japanese drummer, Haruna from Lovebites!! She also does with her left arm except it comes from behind her head in the same slow motion!! Aside from playing power metal, it's her control and effortless way she plays that almost belies what she is playing!! I would put Senri and Haruna in the same class!!

It seems as though a lot of young Japanese female drummers take inspiration from Senri. Yoyoka did an Anderson .Paak - Put Me Thru cover at 9 years old, it's definitely worth checking out. It's a good video to cover on this channel so you could explain why Yoyoka has an extra drum to her left? I'm not a drummer, clearly.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums I played drums from age 8 to 11 from 1966 to 1969. I gave it up because I couldn't master isolation in my hands and feet of different rhythms. I took up guitar at 13 in 1971 and played for 14 years to 1985 and then quit and sold my gear. I bought a guitar in 2020 after not touching a guitar for 35 years. I have now been playing again for 2 years and some of the old technique is starting to re-emerge.

How have you not reacted to Tamu Murata? She's from what I think is one of the best collection of musical talent playing now, Nemophila. Tamu has a "drum battle" video with Senri Kawaguchi to the jazz song "Real Life" that is INCREDIBLE! Its from a drum program Tamu hosted in 2017. Here's a link if interested th-cam.com/video/ViyZ49RsNfk/w-d-xo.html About Tamu; she has been playing drums since a child, was in a pop bands for a while then became a session drummer, she creates music for different media (video games, anime) and also teaches an advanced drum course at a school. She joined Nemophila in 2019 when the lead singer, Mayu, asked her to sit in on a session Mayu was playing with friends. The band members were all in other projects and it was meant to be one off, but Mayu had such a great time that she floated the idea of making it permanent. Rest is, as they say, history. I think that's what makes Nemophila such a great band because on top of every member being phenomenal at their craft, they were all good friends first. Oh, and Tamu is not only a great drummer but she also plays, piano, guitar, xylophone and JAZZ SAXAPHONE. Probably more than that, she's an excellent musician.

Nice review Andrew. Thanks for that.
You should check out the original version recorded live 6 years ago (th-cam.com/video/dsAMVV9LugY/w-d-xo.html), she was 17 yo at that time. We can see the progression, but it was already an awesome performance especially because she was by far the youngest of the band, but clearly the leader. Senri has played with numerous of amazing and world class musicians in the past years, and each time she brings exactly what the track needs. At this level, it is definitely a science. And as you already know, it also true with her stunning solos, like this one (th-cam.com/video/V5YDxDuyKDI/w-d-xo.html) which is for me the best solo I ever heard.
