Sometimes when she hit a drum she holds the stick only with two fingers so it bounces back freely and fall back over her arm. Sometimes she do the opposite, and throw back the stick and then accelerate it like a whip. This is a very good video for seeing how she drums.
It's strange, I love her playing fusion with Guthrie and jazz with her Japanese compatriots, I find it extremely enjoyable, but Senri's moment of improvisation comes BEFORE the performance, when she works out her part, and tends to stay pretty loyal to that... definitely NOT my definition of a jazz drummer in the sense of a Larnell Lewis or Philly Joe Jones.

Senri has got ,"cute", down to a science . Her ability to move around the kit is like watching a bee move around the garden from flower to flower. I have taken her lessons on Drumeo and will continue to follow her career. Wish she would come to Northern Calif for a drum clinic.
Yoyoka Soma covered this on stage at 7 years old. It was very slightly simplified. I would love to see her cover this again as she is 13 and her skills are phenomenal. She has been enrolled in a high school course at Oakland art school of programming ands performance. Regular jr high for regular classes. Moving to Los Angeles at the end of June. Sheis touring Japan performing and holding drum clinics.
So much style, grove and precision. I'm not a drummer or a jazz-rocker, but Onyx is such a catchy tune. And the drums on it, Sensri's playing, is so articulate and I just love her bounce in the verse.
I think that her strength comes, in part, from her always having been around very good teachers, especially Kozo Suganuma (who only recently passed away) and top performers who have really brought out the best in her. She has an incredible range which she has said she does not want simply categorized as 'jazz' or 'rock' or 'fusion', or whatever.
Being so young, it is great to see how Senri has been accepted into an elite class of drummers (Drummerworld's Top 500 drummers). But even as an elite drummer, she has a lot of growth ahead of her when compared to the drummers at the top of the list, such as Gavin Harrison, Simon Phillips, etc. Looking forward to how her exceptional talent elevates in the years ahead.
HaHa saw you subscribed, you can undo that as this was a one-off video expressing my admiration... I am not a good source of new material of Senri's.. however I do recommend my playlist "Senri!!" for the good stuff, and check out "Musical genius" playlist if you're feeling adventurous haha
As a drummer myself of over 50 years, I have several "favorite" drummers and some even very influential idols, especially with the double bass and odd meter beats. Of course Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Dave Weckl, Gavin Harrison, Marco Minneman, Thomas Lang, Gregg Bissonette, Vinnie Colauita, Terry Bozzio (Zappa days), Rodney Holmes, Mark Craney (Gino Vannelli and Jean Luc Ponty), Graham Lear (also when with Gino Vannelli) and Dennis Chambers would round out my personal "Elite" 13 drummers (I'm sure I missed a few)! I've been watching these TH-cam videos of Senri since she was a little girl so, for many years. She is without a doubt easily in that Elite group of drummers, making it 14 not just female drummers, ALL drummers! She's so tight, diverse, smooth and multi-faceted and has incredible internal syncopation (clock as someone below noted) and just has such a natural feel for spot on rhythm and playing that's appropriate for the music she's playing. I love watching her effortlessly rip around the kit!! I wish her the best in continuing to become one of the most recognized, amazing drummers in the world today and may she have ongoing career success that she so much deserves!
Senri is an awesome prodigy and an epic player but I don't think she would describe herself as a "rock drummer." 🤔 I think she, and fellow prodigy Kanade Sato, both lean pretty heavily toward jazz and fusion. Love to watch her play though. She's definitely Zen. If she was any more relaxed behind the kit, she'd be asleep. Thanks for the upload.
Cheers Chris. I suppose it depends on where you define “fusion”.. I think of it as complicated rock haha. I believe a sober John Bonham would sound like this....
Rock drummer, I was thinking Jazz drummer!! In saying that she is far beyond her age and having followed her for 6 six since she was 18, we are looking at what I call a genius on the drums!! This I may add is my opinion I have put her in my top 3 of all time! 60 years of watching some of the biggest names in Rock,Metal and Jazz live in stadia Senri Kawaguchi is a class act. The other two, Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy!!
I've seen Senri in person maybe ten times. One of the best jazz and/or fusion drummers in the world. Repetitious simple beats are the opposite of her nature. She is improving at this.
Totally agree, if you played the Tokyo concert Senri did with Saisse (th-cam.com/video/MvEBp2qGHYU/w-d-xo.html) to blindfolded musos they would be astounded at the power, but because they see a girl she's pigeon-holed (oooh she's great FOR A GIRL... )
川口千里 is just her name in kanji. 川 is kawa[river] 口 is kuchi [mouth or opening]. Her birth name is Chisato but some anime writer had that name so she usually goes by Senri. Rock has been her weakness but she finally got a backbeat. As for best J female rock drummer, (and maybe best worldwide) has to be Akane Hirose. Even Jimmy Page is s fan. On the other hand I'd say Senri is the best bebop style drummer since Max Roach. Not much demand for that though.
Never used the word "female" or "Japanese" haha... Hirose is good if your definition of rock is limited to jangly guitar bands played by teenagers; I refer to the group including, but not limited to, Aynsley Dunbar, Steve Smith, Mark Craney, Simon Phillips, Jeff Porcaro, John Bonham... I have not a single doubt which one they would vote for.
Akane Hirose? Eh! Band Maid is excellent. But. I saw Hirose perform - she is an excellent, but limited drummer - she keeps the beat and is imaginative & creative. Senri Kawaguchi is a far superior drummer - I've seen Kawaguchi perform with Kumi Adachi - she doesn't lack for a, back beat. Kawaguchi could easily play anything Hirose puts forward, with ease. Which is not to besmirch Hirose. One is a genius and prodigy. The other is a talented drummer within a constrained genre.
Her name is, and always has been, romanised as Senri, which comes from the On reading of the Kanji (センリ in Katakana); Chisato comes from the Kun reading of the Kanji (ちさと in hiragana). The Anime director and character designer 川口千里 , is also Senri Kawaguchi.
Every other bar is like a famous Messi goal, a Ronnie O'Sullivan 147, a Tom Brady touchdown pass...you get the idea! .. every single one. She is a great drummer, and perhaps one of the best jazz-fusion drummers, but I wouldn’t call her a rock drummer. Furthermore, calling anyone “the best rock drummer in the world” is kind of silly hyperbole (unless you are talking about the late great John Bonham or Neal Peart).
Better to say jazz/fusion drummer, which is at another level. Everybody with a minimum talent can become a decent rock drummer. To become a jazz/fusion drummer you need to study deeply my friends and the same applies to bass and guitar
