What they don't tell you he is the component right behind the bit is called a housing. The housing has a bend in it 2 degrees or so and houses what is called a saund which sends a signal to the surface. The signals picked up by the locator which shows you a clock if you will 12 o clock being up three o clock being left 9 o clock being right and six o clock of being down. The bit is connected to an inner rod which spins all the time. The housing is connected to the outer rod which is turned to the needed Direction. The cuttings or spoils are removed by pumping mud through the pipe and pushed out around the outside of the boring pipe which is called returns. That's about as simple of an explanation as you can get.

Finally got it! Well shown and explained and easy to understand! So it is simply not just a matter of boring, but depending of the type of formation use high pressure flow of the fluid in softer formations and in harder formation make use of the bend and also use the high pressure fluid and drill together. Very nice, straightforward and informative. 👌👌👍😉
Look forward to see how the last part of the drill looks above ground.
    Thanks a lot you guys

The Horizontal Directional Drill knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the Horizontal Directional Drill from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the Horizontal Directional Drill is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the Horizontal Directional Drill must also know where it was.
The Horizontal Directional Drill guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the Horizontal Directional Drill has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

Most of the questions I see are about how the cut up chunks, called cuttings in the drilling world, are brought back to surface. The short answer is that the special drilling fluid that is pushed out the end of the bit in the video has a high enough viscosity to pick up all of the particles and carry them back to surface on the outside of the drill pipe.

All metals have some degree of flexibility. Picture a railroad switching yard. Do you see curves in any of the tracks? Even though the track is a very strong steel, it can still be bent over a distance. The drill pipe is similar in that respect.
From the bottom end of the vertical bore hole, where the directional drilling begins, to the full horizontal direction may be a quarter of a mile. Over that span, the drill pipe can easily flex enough to accomplish the turn.

There's a video here on TH-cam showing a precisely steered drill bit that broke through the surface and is blowing mud all over someone else's property.

but how those hard pipe bend

Each pipe bends a tiny bit. Over a long distance, it adds up.

you cant bend them by hand. but they do bend in the ground. that is not an issue. keep in mind that the pipe is hallow and not solid.

      @@underlinehdd Sir/Mam , I've some doubt,
      1. If pipe bent upward slope direction then, How sewage flow against gravity?
      2. During the drilling process, the waste soils are we made, so How the soils are taken out from the underground hole?
      Pls explain Sir/Mam.

@oneviwatara Material is displaced from the subterranean drilling equipment, and the subsequent pipe, thus it has to go somewhere. That somewhere is above ground where the equipment came from. You swap one for the other.

Still, it doesn't make clear how the actual drill bit assembly is being redirected - "go left, go right ..up. down". Is there, for example, a hydraulic pressure coming along the shaft from the operator to make the bit 'lean' in a required direction? How does this work exactly - none of the explanations online seem to go into this.

6 months old but I'll answer anyway.
The shaft is bent, so the damn thing always goes at an angle xD
They have controls to measure the current angle of the bend, so they know it'll dig up, or whatever.
To dig straight, I think they just rotate the bend constantly, making a small spiral that looks straight.

spottymaldoon If I'm not mistaken the drill bit/rig has a bend in it to control direction..
Example...if the bend is in a downward position the drill boars upward.
The video shows this clearly if your familiar with subterranean drilling.
      Hope this heled.

this video is wrong. and it will confuse you. Theres two styles of directional drilling machines. One style that drills through dirt, and the other style that can drill through rock and harder ground conditions. This animation is showing a rock drill, but drilling like a dirt drill would.
a dirt drill has a paddle at the tip. it points in the desired direction to achieve and you just dead push to gain a change in direction. if you want to go straight you spin quickly and push slowly.
a rock drill is different. it looks like what the animation shows, but whats wrong with the animation is that the tip spins at all times. the outer rod has a slight bend in it and thats how you get direction. the inner rod spins the tricone bit at the end, ill say it again, AT ALL TIMES. You cant push a tricone bit unless you were in softer ground. If you were to use this bore head in softer ground it most likely would not gain enough change in direction to complete the bore successfully. At no time will you ever see a tricone not spinning while the bore head goes through the ground! But what the animation might have been misunderstanding is the outer rod doesnt spin all the time. you will spin the outer rod to determine the direction you want to go like up down left right. and then you spin the inner rod and push slowly. the bore head has a slight bend in it that allows the change in direction when the outer rod is stationary in the desired position.

You are incorrect, the video clearly provides two examples of the BHA, one is the jetting assembly and the other is modified to use a mud motor. There are not two styles of drilling machines. Listen to the video again and you will see that they were indicating two methods.
