Can you show entire episodes of Animated Star Trek, rather than just 3 or 5-minute clips? This episode was great, although I don't remember it too well.
The acting of Kirk, Spock and McCoy show why individual recording for animation ought to be avoided at all costs. You can tell that Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and ESPECIALLY William Shatner are just reading the script pretty flatly and low-energy. Only James Doohan seems to be getting into the spirit of the thing. I can only guess that it's because Shatner, Kelley and Nimoy were recording at different places and times and weren't bouncing their performances off of each other and Doohan.
Did you ever play the CD-ROM version of Star Trek: 25th Anniversary or Judgement Rites? It was pretty much the same thing, especially with William Shatner
Voice acting does take a lot more out of an actor but these days, especially with video games, the directors insists on multiple takes to portray a variety of responses that they can they select from. Remember that Star Trek, The Animated Series is from the 70's when the costs of animation was being reduced dramatically by outsourcing and serious animated shows that required voice acting which weren't just for children was still unusual, even so many people then only saw Star Trek TAS as a Saturday morning children's show even though they tried to hold true to the original series story lines. Also keep in mind that the Star Trek cast were by that point so type casted that they were finding it difficult to find work so presumably voice acting the roles that was denying them further employment was really only by necessity. I'm sure they weren't very happy with the voice acting being one of their few sources of income.
It had to be that way, especially with Shatner, who was hustling, doing guest TV appearances and stage work in his post Star Trek lean years. Jimmy Doohan had a background in radio and was especially suited to this voiceovers work.
@@MichaelSHartman Yes master, Satan good, Jesus bad. I understand. I'm not even a Christian bro, but this is a gateway to programming people into becoming ACTUALLY immoral. (Fine with any form of heinous government forced on them, no resolve, no spine, you can tell them the sky is polkadot pink and yellow and they'll believe you)
Such an underrated series.
One of my favorite epi's of the series.
