    When you get to your hotel or accommodation get a Business card with address on it... take it with you and let the Taxi driver read the information in Thai... this was also very helpful for me on my travels anywhere in the world. Chock Dee

    In my experience after 3 years in Bangkok : 30% of taxis are honest by putting the meter.
    The 70% think foreigners are just wallets with legs!
    And most of them drive recklessly.

    I’ve seen good and bad drivers in BKK. Sometimes the flat rate quoted is not worth arguing about, I paid 150 from Suk 11 to Khao San when it was 3 am. When they do use the meter, I always tip well especially on a short ride under 100 baht. No way would I ever want coins back, just round up closest 20:baht

    Since you speak english in the videos, they must be for foreigners. Easiest way to get a taxi that drives by meter is to just open the backdoor, and say "Meter, chai mai?". Also, foreigners usually gives tip, so no real need for coins. An honest driver deserves tip, to encourage them to be honest.

    Compared to the median wage in Thailand, driving a taxi can be like winning the lottery. Just one wealthy foreigner a day who agrees to a flat rate similar to what they pay in Europe, that can easily double the drivers daily wage

    In Cambodia (กัมพูชา), when we go far, we tend to use the nearest Wat (วัด) as a reference. I wonder if it is the same in Thailand? I think that in pretty much ALL of Bangkok you can use train/metro or bus to get to your destination (if during the day), it is just a matter of planning ahead :) ขอบคุณสำหรับวิดีโอ 555

    they now have Uber in Thailand. although it is still a limited amount of cars, they do have that option and you don't have to worry about haggling with the taxi driver and it is charged straight to your credit card! and it is usually a pretty new and clean car as well! they even have Uber motorbikes!

      +Sam P can u please provide me with further information on how to learn more about this new system, my husband and I are planning a trip to Thailand next year and truly I'm a bit concern...and this new system seems more reliable and safe....Thank you

      you have to create a Uber account first before you are able to use Uber service. download the Uber app on your phone and create one or you might be able to create one at Uber website. link the Uber app to your credit card. once you have done so, when you are ready to hail a Uber taxi or motorbike, just open the app and put the drop pin exactly on your location and request to be picked up. if there are any around you at the time, you can usually be picked up within 10-15 minutes. don't be afraid to use a regular taxi as long as the driver is willing to turn on the meter. it is when they don't turn on the meter, then you will get ripped off. good luck

This is really scary... Thank you once again

      Uber is a huge company in the United States. i believe the issues you are talking about happened in India or somewhere like that. i've used Uber plenty of times and nothing bad has ever happened to me. as with anything else, there are always going to be a few bad apples that ruin the experience for others. if you are traveling with your husband, i am sure you will be safe so don't be afraid to give them a try just for the experience. by the way, i don't work for Uber or anything :) i just hate getting ripped off in Thailand so that is why i use Uber.

    Download grab taxi app. It’s thailand/Asia’s version of Uber. I’m not sure if it would be a few baht cheaper but you don’t need to do all this hassling bs lol. Just put your location, taxi picks you up and drops you off.

    Hello dear. We are a group of 4 going to Bangkok next month. We will be arriving at Don Mueang International Airport and staying in Pratunam area. Would you recommend taxi meter or airport public bus to Pratunam area? Since we're having 4 members and each of us will have to pay for each ride (bus + BTS Skytrain), will airport bus to Mo Chit plus BTS to Pratunam area cost as much as taxi meter? I don't know which choice is cheaper for group travelling.

    I arrived in Suvarnabhumi Airport last July after traveling 16 hours. I got a ticket which I gave to the driver. He told me the rate is 500 bahts. I said use the meter. He said "no, no, no." I think the advice is great but when you arrive late at night and you want to get to your hotel you're not in the mood to argue to save a few bahts. So I ended up giving him 500 bahts.

    • @7volcast
      @7volcast 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wayne Samuel that's your own fault.

    • @samthepoet107
      @samthepoet107 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emmanuel Selvas what's my own fault? You need to make yourself clear. My fault for arriving late at night? It's really hard to counter argue with you because you did not specify what's my own fault. For the record had I arrived in the afternoon I would have just got out of his taxi. Keep in mind at night time in Bangkok there is a surcharge and also there were tolls on that road that he included in the 500 bahts. Had he used the meter I would have had to pay the tolls. You have to know when to fight your battles.

    • @thecat2587
      @thecat2587 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your fault for accepting that fare. People like you make Bangkok more expensive and give these dodgy drivers reasons to try this again and again.

    • @samthepoet107
      @samthepoet107 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fault is not even applicable. Why don't you try another word that is appropriate? I spent about 22 hours traveling and arrived at the taxi area after midnight and I should worry about making fares expensive because of cheapskates like Captain Cat? The problem with people like Captain Cat is he does not know when to fight his battles. There is a time and place for everything. After midnight in a foreign country arguing over fares is not one of them. You seem to forget or maybe ignore the fate of the American businessman who was living in Bangkok yet refused to pay the fare of a few bahts because he argued that the meter was rigged. He was earning American wages in a developing country yet the taxi driver chopped him to death on the street of Bangkok over a silly fare in broad daylight. Well I remember that incident. And the way things go in Thailand Thais are always right even when they are wrong.
      'American hacked to death over $1.60 cab fare, Thai police say'
      "A taxi driver hacked an American to death after an argument over a $1.60 fare, Thai officials said late Sunday.
      Troy Lee Pilkington, 51, was repeatedly slashed with a 12-inch machete on Saturday night, according to Bangkok police.
      Police Lt. Col. Teerayut Maiplaeng said the suspect told them that Pilkington, who had lived in the country for three years, accused him of rigging the meter as they sat in traffic on the city’s busy Sukhumvit Road.
      The victim allegedly stormed out of the cab and refused to pay the 51 baht ($1.60) fare.
      The suspect claimed when he asked for the money, the American threw a cup of coffee at him, after which he pulled the knife from his trunk and chased after Pilkington."

      What the heck? You're dredging up a very isolated incident to justify that you could not understand the system here in BKK. And then say that we are "tight" when we don't accept being ripped off by dodgy taxi drivers (of which there are many) in this city.
      You're quite happy to malign people like us who respect the city and respect other travellers who come after us here - and yet you won't take responsibility for your own actions - just because you were not emotionally equipped to deal with BKK.
      As for the 22 hours travelling time, I'd love to know where that was from, are you exaggerating like you are with justifying that you were happy to ripped off because you didn't want to be hacked up? You don't remember the story that you linked to, you Googled to find it, an article from 2013.....
      Are you for real? Just accept the fact that you didn't do your due diligence when preparing to come to "big scary Asia" and be done with it.

    It would be a good idea to make a map over the places you wanna visit in the country. It has to be a map that describes the distance from point A to B and roughly how much it will cost. You need to get the info about prices, by asking a local that know a lot about prices in Thailand, if that's the country you are visiting. Do also make sure to have the distance and price from the airport to your hotel or wherever you shall stay. The local prices can of course not be 100% but just roughly what the X trip would cost for a person that is born in that country. It is also good as mentioned in this video, that you are taking photos of the taxi number etc. Bring the selfmade map with you, when you are travelling around in the country. Oh and do always remember to have your phone on you, wherever you wanna go. It is not only the phone that needs to be smart in this world, you do too.
