Making this video and being VULNERABLE ON FILM was very “NOT DUMB”…. Most will ID with being “HARD” on themselves as you momentarily were and having your MATE support & encourage you! Well done, Family of Sailing Videos!

I totally agree with you. And if you guys want to call yourselves a family, just do it. I am a 68 year old single widower, and I call myself a family.
I am planning to buy a sailboat when I retire from my current employer, so I like the "real life" episodes. Keep doing what you're doing. Safe travels.

Well…I just watched the end of your video and saw the “family” comment. My husband and I considered ourselves a family as soon as we got married. We were a family for 2 years before we ever had children. Having our kids didn’t make us a family, the two of us became a family as soon as we were married. You guys are the sweetest family right now!!

Don't let the missed paperwork take you down. I wouldn't consider this a fail. There is so much red tape for each country and unfortunately the best lessens I've found are by not doing something right and learning from it. Now, for the future, you'll know what is needed. Im happy you shared this video, even with the mistake, because we love seeing your adventures, good or bad. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

This is the first time in my life hearing “Zarpe”. First thank you for sharing, I can imagine having this learning opportunity is difficult. However, you sharing it is immensely helpful. After YEARS of boating and following sailing channels, never knew zarpe was a thing.

  • @popscr
    @popscr ปีที่แล้ว +63

The Zarpe is a required document everywhere in the region. You might be stopped by coastguard and they will require it, failure to show that might get you in serious trouble. i'm in Costa Rica and we go to Panama and Nicaragua often.....Zarpe is the most importan piece of documentation needed, besides passport. Be careful not to go through Nicaragua without it. they are not as friendly as Guatemala.....just a piece of advice. If in need for help here....let me know ;-)

Yes. Guatemala, among other places, can deliberately make it difficult, hoping for bribes. So don't feel bad. I do not know much, but am not surprised and feel a little sad that you feel so bad. I would have reacted same way. You are amazing.

It sounds as though you have cruising experience as much as I don’t like the thought of bribing people or officials are we talking about handling the guy at $10 bill for his personal pocket if so is it does it become arguable but it’s worth it just to give them the $10 bill

Life is a constant learning process. Reality does NOT play by a certain set of rules. I work in a hospital, and I am constantly confronted by reality and its brutal sense of humor. Guatemala entrance is just another learning experience that will not be forgotten any time soon. Just another hurdle in life’s many adventures. Everything that you have accomplished so far in both of your life’s (medical issues, becoming a pilot, college, re-building a boat, etc.). Your crying is just a release of emotions all at once. Some yell, use profanity, hit a wall, etc. this is where your dogs can be an awesome emotional support. You will conquer Guatemala, and many others around both of your journeys.

    • @MrAndrewholde
      @MrAndrewholde ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah it wrong but I’ve traveled the world backpacking and I can tell you there are many borders you will not cross without paying a little! If you have all your papers in order they hate it! Best thing to do is just ask “what is the fine”. I know people will say you shouldn’t because it makes it worse but sorry yeah sometimes you should! I even saw a girl arrested at a jungle border in Asia 100’s of miles from civilisation, because she wouldn’t pay $10. To this day I dread to think what happened to her! Also those guys are probably only being paid a couple of hundred bucks a month if there lucky. They see us in are expensive boats living a life they could not even dream and yeah to be honest I don’t blame them!

I'm just starting to dream about lifestyles that I would like to have when I'm able to retire and sailing/cruising has gotten to the top of the list. I watch a bunch of videos on youtube and have seen plenty of weather/passage videos - but it all seems like an adventure with a happy ending. Being ten minutes into the video and seeing the tears and feelings that you guys are putting out in the open is refreshing. You're telling the truth. None of us have an "S" on our chest, were not perfect or infallible. It sucks to miss something that can turn out to be as big as this, but it's still real and it's valuable to those of us who are watching from half a world away. 8 months have passed since you dropped this video, and I'll catch up to you guys' most recent stuff in a matter of hours - but I hope that you've continued to show the truth in the lifestyle that you're living and I'm thinking about getting into. Thank you for documenting your truth and your life and letting us all get a glimpse of what's out there for us all (good and bad) should we be able to tighten a sheet and find the right heading. Thanks for the last 8 months that you guys lived and that I'll watch in the next few days.

Had this happen to the boat I crewed on for a summer back in my late 20's. I was just a deck hand so none of my responsibility, but it happens. As for the family bit. You are a couple, so you are a Family. Add in your fur kids and you are a thriving family.

You have just demonstrated once again that you are an amazing couple! Taking responsibility for a mistake so quickly gets all of the garbage out of the way. It doesn’t matter if you are the only ones who could have made the mistake. You could have given uncountable reasons for the error. I/we still admire the both of you for your accomplishments and for sharing all the good and not so good moments with us. This is just a little hiccup in your adventure not a roadblock. You can start your day over any time you want to.
As far as being a family, a married couple is considered a family. I have considered you two as a family and by the sharing of your life with me I feel like part of your family,as I’m sure the 315,000 subscribers do. Thanks again for your honesty, openness and love. Stay safe!

Thank you so so much for sharing the difficult times. I have been watching a couple other sailing/travel channels, and while I know that they have their struggles also, they often don't show them. This has led me to feel not so good about my own life as I also desire to live this kind of lifestyle. I've had to take a break from watching them because as they do make me happy, I feel that subconsciously they have also been making me unhappy ("why isn't my life so good?") Actually seeing the struggles you go through and not just knowing about them gives me a kind of balance when I watch your channel. It's not that I take any kind of joy in your despair, it's more about me knowing everyone struggles with certain things in life and I'm not alone in my struggles. So with that, I am sorry you've gone through some difficult experiences but thank you do very much for sharing and I hope you don't have to go through many of them. Cheers!

We all make mistakes, all the time, but we live in a world where we are led to think that everyone around us leads perfect lives. One thing as an aspiring sailor and TH-cam consumer that I like to see is realism. So many of the once-good channels have gone so commercial that they’ve lost touch with their viewers. I’m all for success and kudos to them but the content isn’t real and relevant to many of us. You guys keep that in mind as you grow because sailing is why most of us watch and you guys are doing a good job. Sailing content, projects, procedures and how you guys handle it give us a real idea of how it all works. Show the real side and continue to be yourselves, don’t try and be someone else because you don’t need to. Oh by the way, you guys are a family!

To show that everything doesn't go perfectly the way that you did was so real, And quite frankly beautiful. Some of these shows will kind of fake drama for the sake of drama, but this was just real life and it was very appreciated. ❤

I’ve been binge watching you guys from the beginning for the last week. There’s so much I could tell you right now about why I’m not there myself but I do have the boat. It’s a cute little older Catalina 30 that’s perfect for just me. Maybe a +1 if I meet the right woman but for now, it’s my project and it’s perfect for me! At 48 years old, I’m still learning that what other people think about me is none of my business and I wish those people felt the same way at times. But here I go with what I think! I’m impressed with the way you’ve taken this journey and made it yours 100%. You’ve listened to what people have had to say, accepted what fits and let go of what wouldn’t work quite as well for your path. Something I’m also still working on. I’ve seen a ton of channels like yours but not many have shown raw emotion and it’s release, only highlighting the beautiful side of sailing. This was important for me to see because it shows the reality of sailing. I’m learning a lot from your reality as I work a bit more every day to hopefully cross winds with you. You guys inspire me and when I watch your videos, I think, why not me? I have no good answer for that. So thank you for being here and not letting the nay sayers discourage you from your dreams and hearts. Side note, the logic that you’re not a family without children doesn’t make sense to me. Do you cease to be a family when the kids are grown and gone? Are you only a family again when they come to visit and no more a family when they go home? I’d like to ask that person who said you weren’t a family those questions. The way I see it, I’m still a father even though my daughter (26) grew up and now lives 2,000 miles away. I started telling people to write their opinions of me on toilet paper, it’s the only way their opinions will be useful in my life. I know, I know, it’s just my opinion but I think you guys are a family. A very beautiful and inspiring family at that. Until I see you on the water, I’ll keep you on the screen! Much love to you both!

Thanks for sharing guys. Its late where I am, so will be brief. As others have said. The gamble that you took with the boat. The incredible amount of hard work that you both put in, to make her better than 'factory' if my memory isn't playing tricks, was something I'm unlikely to forget. Mistakes are brilliant learning opportunities. You know that. So, learn the lessons and move on. Like, don't let your food stocks get so low. Or maybe, always have an emergency 'stash' of non perishables that you don't touch, unless its a genuine emergency.
Crossing borders since 9/11 is one of the most bureaucratic obstacles that we have to face in our world. Most people only do this once or twice a year, for vacations. Or, not at all. So, there will be hiccups. There will be dramas. But courtesy and a smile will often open doors that previously were closed.
I'm ex-UK military and while the military can be very dysfunctional compared to civilian life. It does have a lot to teach you.
Like, debriefing after a 'situation', passage or whatever. It should never be a shaming session. That's not the object.
Just a run through of what happened, what went well. What could've gone better. What you'd do differently next time. How you might prepare differently. Do this until it becomes a habit and you'll find yourselves doing it in a chilled conversation, naturally. Then mentally filing it away. Or putting it in your log book for future reference.
I love the term satisficing. Things don't have to be done perfectly. As long as you accomplish your goals or some of them. You don't expend more time and energy achieving them than you want to and you achieve them safely etc etc It often doesn't matter that you don't hit 100% of a goal. Nobody is watching over your shoulder. Nobody is scoring you. Armchair admirals may criticise. But, they'd likely do much worse themselves. There's a saying in some branches of the military, that 'every day above ground, is a good day'. That's a low bar, you might think.
But, in the military, it can be a very high bar. With what you're doing, its lowish, so basically keeping yourselves afloat in all senses every day is something to celebrate and be thankful for. Everything else on top is a bonus.
As to the 'person' who corrected your definition of your family. I understand that often in life, what people say can be thought provoking and it seems to me that like me, your relish being challenged. If its done to aid growth. But what the guy said isn't fact, so far as I know. Its just his opinion. He's welcome to it. But that doesn't mean he gets to dictate what labels you or anyone else use to describe, whatever.
His opinion is no more valid than any random person. In fact, he's way behind the times and needs to educate himself. The old definition of what constitutes a family has been consigned to the history books. We have all sorts of families now. Almost a kaleidoscope of possibilities.
I suspect that this journey that you're on. Both physically and metaphorically. Will help you grow as people and as partners, in ways that you can't even imagine yet. You've stepped outside of your comfort zones since the start of this journey and as I'm sure you know, at least as well as I, that's where the growth is. We only get to pass here once. You've got to make your life count for something.
I almost forgot. I'm really liking the new raw style. Very 'front line journalistic' ;) Hopefully it takes a lot less time to edit etc
    Apologies for stating the obvious.
    Happy trails :)

This was great footage. To let your fans see you at breaking point, however temporary, was pure genius. We loved you anyway and now we feel closer to you than ever. All that you put up with to get there, showing how tough you can be, and then you become our little girl once again, for just a moment, but you shone like a star. A saw a thousand arms go round your shoulders, including mine. You Rock, Sweetpea. We love you so much 💝.

The way I try to look at mistakes is “ok, this is a problem I now know how to deal with. I wouldn’t have known how to fix this before, now I do.” Looking for how a bad situation adds to me and my experience, as opposed to how it takes away has really helped with my anxiety and perfectionism. I hope you’re both feeling much better! ❤

Wow! That was nail-biting stressfull. I can honestly say that your channel is better than Netflix!!!
I am so glad things worked out (or so I hope - looking forward to the next vlog).
As for “behind the scenes” parts, I am ALLLLLL for it. Keeps it real and makes us the viewers just more “part” of your journey.
As for the “family” part - with all due respect to the one that commented, I personally think it is bull. My husband and I do not have kids, but we have four rescue dogs. We ARE a family, fullstop.
I just honestly want to thank you for your channel. I know nuuuuuffin about sailing, and I am going with you through this adventure. I lock myself in a quiet room when I get notified of a video drop from you. I do not want to be disturbed.
You are genuinely one of the most respectful channels on TH-cam. Will keep on supporting.
Love and well wishes from South Africa

You two are a family. Beating yourself up for making a mistake is a mistake itself. The best learning comes from mistakes. Recognizing when you make one is the key thing. Admitting it is even better. Progressing in spite of it adds to you wisdom and judgment. Looking back on my long life, the mistakes I made often became the best of times.

Jade, you are not dumb. You are an incredible human being. I binge watched through you both rebuilding your boat and you, Jade, did incredible. Take it from a much older perfectionist, this was a minor mistake in the the grand scheme of things. Hershey’s was the right way to address the problem.

Your best video yet, showing the emotional toll sleep deprivation has on long-distance sailors, collectively fatigue is every cruisers greatest enemy, because you make mistakes when you are tired. Professional videographers: The Adventure Locker are in Rio Dulce, thinking you have a lot in common, expanding both your channels.

The only way we learn is by making mistakes. You're human. To err is human, to forgive, divine.
    Did you fail ? Yes.
Did you learn from your failure? Yes
Then you are a successful failure! SUCCESS comes in all sorts of forms some of which are more painful than others.
And, you have a new experience to draw from which you have now been able to pass that knowledge on to others.
We appreciate your forthrightness in admitting to your mistake(s) in front of us and we are impressed by your bravery in putting it out there for the world to see. This was not an easy thing to do and a heartbreaking thing to see. "Chin up, Buttercup." Things will improve. You've got this! 🙂

This might be my favorite episode of yours that I've seen. This shows people like me that you really are human. Normally I 2 young, very attractive people on this amazing boat that I don't think I could probably never afford making all of the right decisions and never making mistakes. (Admittedly, I haven't seen all of your videos.) That doesn't feel real. This feels real to me. This makes you seem like people that I can relate to. I was not subscribed to your channel before watching this episode. After this episode I am. Thank you for sharing this vulnerable side to people like me. I know that it was difficult for you, but it really helps me appreciate you and the difficulties that you have to overcome even more.

I don't quite know what or where to start but ....
Jade...you are not dumb, stupid, nor did you fail!!!! You made a mistake. That happens in the game of life. You are both so amazing!! Jade, you are such a beautiful person...not only your outward looks, but your heart and inner beauty as well. Both your spirits are so beautiful!! Don't be down on yourselves!! If anyone criticizes either of you, they obviously have never been in the ocean and know nothing on what it takes to have the lifestyle that you both share! It's easy to criticize from the comfort of their recliner. I'm so envious of what you both have done and learned, and you must be so proud too! I'm sending you both love and hugs and and you know as well as I do, that everything will be alright. Also..love your videos and you showing your real emotions! Hope your ribs heal fast and you ARE a family!! Relax and enjoy! ❤ Myk

I understand frustration, but I also understand “stonewalling” and someone being twice as hard on you than you already are of yourself can be miserable. I understand the why you hate making a mistake when you only have each other.
