Welcome to my review of the Sphero Star Wars BB-9E App-Enabled Droid. This all new First Order droid may not be the droid you're looking for, but if you're a member of the Resistance, there's a pretty good chance he's looking for you.
If you're a fan of Sphero, Star Wars, or even just cool robots, you're sure to love this dark and mysterious droid. Clad in a black and grey colour deco, BB-9E fits perfectly the dark aesthetic of the First Order, yet what of his personality?

The head is the R5 Astromech head shrunk down in size.I kinda want it now.
They definitely both have that dark, Empire/First Order look.
I love droids! I'm planning on dropping $7000 next year on a custom Buckethead astromech. Like the one who died in EP iv, but in bronze and green. He'll be self driving, he'll respond to people speaking, and he'll listen to commands like follow me, stay, or sleep. Eventually I wanna drop another 2k on more features to make him more lifelike. I only have $3.5k now that I've saved up from music royalties

These are f'ing amazing! Did they make a full size version of the BB9E yet?
Not that I know of, but Spin Master has released a pretty good sized BB-8, so maybe they will eventually do 9E too.
@@LeoBond Sadly mine does not work anymore the one from spin master the common issue that is pretty much known with the system. But it’s so good as a display but there is a way I can fix it but I saw it on TH-cam but it’s kind of hard to do that
@@johnturcsik2906 What I heard is that they lost the Disney license and had no more reason to continue to keep the app updated. As phones got newer and better, they would no longer work with the app, if you could even find the app at all. It's a real shame. I wish I had seen that coming back when I did the reviews. Pretty hard to recommend something that is eventually going to stop working. Have to be really careful with anything app-based I guess.

Yes it works. I'm not sure if 9E's LEDs will work on BB-8's body, but the heads do stick on and stay on top when you roll them around.
Will they ever be able to make C3P0?
I think they will eventually. When you look at how many motors (there's something like 5 or 6 of them) and how much technological development went into Sphero's Lightening McQueen, you can definitely see a progression in their abilities. I'm betting that by Episode IX they'll have a C3P0 coming out. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking...

They need to make a autonomous one. The fact you need the app open honestly ruins them. Great for star wars fans but if its a robot you want get a Vector.
Sphero should make a head for BB-8 that lights up. Or just another BB-8 that fully lights up (Body and head) birth would b super cool :)
I fully expect this to happen. Every year they do something different to enhance their BB-8, so the next logical step would be lights in the head. The first year we just got the standard BB-8, last year we got the BB-8 with Force Band and dirty colour scheme, and this year we got BB-8 with the Droid Trainer, so I bet next year it's LEDs in the head to catch BB-8 up with BB-9E.

I really like the look of BB-9E, and R2-Q4. But I like R2-D2 sound effects and moves. Not sure which one to get!

Is this droid capable of going in water like the bb-8?
Well since this one has LED lights in the head section I would avoid putting it in the water if I were you. Maybe the body part might be safe in water, but I doubt the head section is watertight. You wouldn't want to flood those LEDs.
Wait what happens if you put the droid heads on mismatched? Bb9e with a bb8 body?
They just stay on magnetically so it should work. I can't remember if I tried it when I had them myself, but I probably did. I don't know if the lights in the BB-9E head would come on or not though.

How do you get the head to stay up the whole time, mine tilts it forward and backward.On the baseplate
There's no trick to it that I can see. It either just cooperates or it doesn't. The BB-8 I tested was having that problem, but not the BB-9E. It might come down to the way the head is facing, so you might try just taking it off and putting it back on in another direction. Might have to do it a few times. If that doesn't help, then I don't know if anything else will either.

Not with this one, but it does with the Sphero R2-D2. For the round ones it all comes from the app.

I've seen them on sale as low as $99. You should definitely take a good look around before buying. I do think they are worth the regular price, but you really don't need to pay that much.

I've seen it anywhere from $130 to $150 USD, but if you find a sale it can even be lower.

The main body is "water resistant" but not the head part.

Do you mean it's not making sounds? Because no BB-9E makes sounds. The sounds all come from the app.

These look really good quality, I might have to take a closer look!
They are, but I recently heard that Sphero wasn't going to bother renewing its license with Disney, meaning they'll probably have to stop making these soon. They also have said that they won't keep updating the app indefinitely going forward, so at some point as new phones come out it will probably not be supported by them, meaning the darn things could stop working. It's a real bummer!

Thanks! Cozmo is a fun little bot, but I really love the Star Wars stuff. Unfortunately I only get to have most of these things around for a week or two, so I have to enjoy them while I can. Hi Wannabe. I'm looking for BB_9E sounds for a STAR WARS fan film that i'm preparing. Those sounds are pretty hard to find on the web (good quality sounds). I wonder, is it possible to download BB_9E sounds from sphero application for a good quality ?
For the draw mode you can zoom in with it

Which one is better, bb8 or bb9e?
I like BB-8, but BB-9E does have lights in his head, which is an extra feature. Other than they they do most of the same things except that they have different sound effects. Both cool though.

If it's new I'd try to take it back. It may be defective. Although sometimes people have trouble charging theirs. You need to make sure that he's sitting in the charging cradle just right, otherwise you won't be getting a power connection. If his head is perfectly on top of his body and sticking there magnetically, then he's sitting in the cradle in the proper position to get a charge. If that doesn't work, I would try to call Sphero for troubleshooting help or just take him back for an exchange.

I'm 99% sure that only R2-D2 (and his R2-Q5 repaint) are capable of housing a built-in speaker, so I believe that BB-9E's sounds do indeed come directly from the app.
