    I visited this park in Colorado ..the moutains that you see in the back ground are 13000 ft elevation. The sand dunes are 1000ft or more above sea level theres a sometimes massive dry stream thats seasonal and sometimes is full of about ten inches of water people collect fossels and rare fine stone in the bed of the stream! Artist from all over the world visit Great Sand dunes NP Co. My night in the campground was amazing i even punched a grizzly bear in the nose! The dunes altogether span a distance of 7 miles by length and range by approx 3 miles wide! Also the maze of the dunes are so vast watch you dont come up and journed to find a couple butt naked as they thought they were far enough into the challenging sea of mighty dunes! They werent embarrest either and i went my way after talking to the very interesting couple and then i traked away farther into the endless giant dunes!

    I hiked to the top of the Star Dune many years ago in October. There had been a little snow overnight, so the sand was wet and firm in the morning, which made hiking a little easier. But after the sun rose higher and the sand dried out, it was not quite so easy.
    After climbing the Star Dune, I headed off to the west in search of a little water table pond I had found on an aerial photo, but never found it....that dune topography is pretty difficult to navigate, especially to a location not marked on a map. After I gave up looking for the pond, I headed southwest and found the furthest terminous of Medano Creek where water had reached in a previous wet year. I found a few different channels where the stream had ended, and out in that wilderness, where no man (except me) had trod, was a bunch of trash, including lots of shoes and sandals. During high water, the channel constantly migrates, and kids and adults will take off their shoes on a dry spot to romp in the shallow stream....only to find that the channel changed and floated them away. Depending on the year, and particular channel the stream takes, those shoes and sandals can get carried 4.5 to 5.5 miles downstream of the dunes parking lot.
    I put in about 11 to 12 miles hiking that day, which in sand, felt like about 20. I left shortly after sunrise and did not get back to the car until dusk. I could barely walk and parts of my feet were rubbed raw from the friction of sand in my shoes. Needless to say, it was a fantastic adventure. I wrote up that hike in our second guidebook, Hiking Colorado II (1999). It is included as Hike No. 46 - Lower Medano Creek and the Great Star Dune. Our hiking books are now out of print, but copies can still be found.

    Oh wow, a hike defeated you! I haven’t seen that often but still quite accomplishment to get that far out into the dune field. Hiking in sand and up dunes is no joke. It is exhausting.
    Awesome video. Really enjoyed the incredible scenery you captured and cool action shots with the sand sledding. You had a beautiful day with that nice blue sky to contrast the sand.
    I have tried like heck to get out to this park the last few years but to no avail. I have had to switch gears so many times on trips the past two years due COVID and difficult school schedules with our boys. Three kids on three different school schedules. It is a nightmare. I planned a trip out to Colorado this fall and was getting ready to pull the trigger on reservations...but I received some very exciting and fortuitous news and am happily switching gears once again.

    Randy, another Colorado highlight! We loved visiting here when we lived in Colorado Springs. You really get a workout on those dunes (great video, a lot of set-up work I bet), and what nice October weather you enjoyed. I always wondered when pioneers traveled the Old Spanish Trail in 1830s, through the San Luis Valley, what did they think when these massive sand dunes appeared ahead of them, piled up against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains? We visited this park in October of 2019. The size of the sand dunes is very deceptive until you are on them. It was a ton of work walking up them and was super tiring. We did a shorter hike straight up the front and wanted to go further but we were too tired. It was fun running down the sand dunes after climbing up. The park was beautiful and I never expected to see sand dunes so large. I felt like I was in Lawrence of Arabia.

    Wow man. You my friend have some great adventures! I'm assuming you only went up once...
    Gotta try these places, though I may skip some of the hiking.... I'm scared of bears and mountain lions. Lol
    Plan on going international?

      Yeah, blessed to be able to take these trips, Adam. Rare to see the animals you mentioned in the places I visit. Mostly, they try to avoid humans. Happy with the US for now... maybe in the future. Still looking at Alaska and Hawaii.

    I don’t know how many people who watch this have climbed a Sand Dune, but if you watch the Indiana Dunes 3 Dunes challenge video those 3 dunes are 160 to 190 ft... and climbing those is no joke... i don’t remember what Sleeping Bear Dunes is height wise but I’ve done that one too. This Great San Dune is insane at 700 plus ft! It will get the heart rate pumping and escalated. Two steps forward one step back in sand.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was perfectly stated! The dune at Sleeping Bear was NASTY! Not as long, but I remember it being so steep!

    I always thought it was strange that my wife and daughter thought that GSD was their favorite stop on our 2016 trip,especially since we had visited Arches, canyon-lands, BCOTG, Mesa Verde, etc.. But they had so much fun there. It was super windy and they thought it was funny getting sandblasted. The footage of you sliding down is awesome! So..are you now out of new material? Whats next up as far as adventures for Americas parks?

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, great place, but would also have a tough time listing GSD above those other parks! :) Hope to get up the 4 individual days on the Blue Ridge Parkway next... then, Lord willing, some new stuff for the planned 2021 trips.

    Well hey, that looked like fun! OK Randy, here's my question: what is your favorite sand dune area? I would argue that it's a tie between White Sands & Coral Pink Sand Dunes. At sunset at White Sands the pure white gypsum dunes take on an incredible hue. Any thoughts?

    • @AmericasParks

      Great question - yeah, think it's tough to beat White Sands!

    I've always wanted to comment that you should wear your America's Parks merchandise during your video shoots. Watching all these sand dunes makes me thirsty. Imagine losing your car keys in all that sand!

    Oh no! Now I know you're getting a little long in the teeth my friend. 😁I was wondering why you didn't just rest a bit and push on the way back is faster along the flat river area? I was hoping you'd make it. 💪 When we did that hike a decade ago, we did it with our two Chihuahuas. I think they might be the only Chihuahuas ever to make it out there. 🤣 It's a deceptively long hike with that peak appearing to be in the front but actually back a bit. Nice storytelling though! 👍 Where's the crew in this one? Also, you need to check out Monahans Sandhills State Park in Texas since you dig sledding. I have a few videos from there if you get bored.

      Great stuff! It was the final day of an exhausting trip in CO. Was flying out that night and simply ran out of gas! But you are right, the ride down was way faster than I expected. Looking back, I should have pressed on. Was really close and (unknowingly) had the time for it. Take care!

    We wax the boards for grip not slickness; skimboarding in Ft. Lauderdale. Can't comprehend the knowledge in that unless they want to slow fat ass's down. Wax on top slickness on the bottom. Oh well great stuff as always.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm s surfer from the NJ shore and you are totally correct - wax = grip. But whatever the theory, no wax on the bottom and the board wouldn't move in the sand.
