Plantation Disaster Capitalism: Native Hawaiians Organize to Stop Land & Water Grabs After Maui Fire

  • With the death toll from the Maui wildfires at 111 and as many as 1,000 still missing, we speak with Hawaiian law professor Kapuaʻala Sproat about the conditions that made the fires more destructive and what's yet to come for residents looking to rebuild their lives. Decades of neocolonialism in Hawaii have redirected precious water resources toward golf courses, resorts and other corporate ventures, turning many areas into tinderboxes and leaving little water to fight back against the flames. Now many Hawaiians say there is a power grab underway as real estate interests and other wealthy outsiders look to buy up land and water rights on the cheap as people are still reeling from the loss of their family members, livelihoods and communities. "Plantation disaster capitalism is, unfortunately, the perfect term for what's going on," says Sproat, who just published a piece in The Guardian with Naomi Klein and is professor of law at Ka Huli Ao Native Hawaiian Law Center and co-director of the Native Hawaiian Rights Clinic at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa School of Law. "The plantations, the large landed interests that have had control over not just the land, but really much of Hawaii's and Maui Komohana's resources for the last several centuries, are using this opportunity, are using this time of tremendous trauma for the people of Maui, to swoop in and to get past the law."

What she seems to miss, at least judging by the title, is that this is all brought to us by socialists. Yes, there are fabulously rich people who will try to make a money grab out of this, or perhaps planned to do that before this obviously planned event happened, but blaming it all on "capitalism" is patently false. Democrats run this show. This is their game. They are the ones planning to impose a leftist tyranny on the nation and they are the ones responsible for this disaster. The socialists run the show and have nothing but contempt for the people. "Capitalists" didn't do this. Those who want to raze the country on behalf of the ruthless rich and set up an ungodly NWO leftist nightmare did.

One of the problems is that indigenous Hawaiians in Maui "don't own enough of the island" to have the power to decide how that land is going to be used. These people were colonized by a foreign government that set them up to fail, insuring that they and all of their descendants would be coolies for the colonizers, paying taxes as "protection money". Sadly, indigenous Hawaiians who "can't keep up with exorbitant cost of living" end up homeless on their ancestors' seized lands.

Native Hawaiian people are being robbed of their history, nation, and their rights as the true owners of the islands they owned. It's disgusting that real estate and large developer investors are using this time of catastrophe as an opportunity to profit. Someone should collect the names of REA's to put them out of business with future clients. My homeowners fire insurance doubled this year due to all the fires in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Calif and the rest of the western states that had forest fire. Those that work hard enjoy the reward of being "rich." If you don't like it, that your problem, move out the way and go weep on the sidelines. Here's a little more water to wash down that red pill I just gave you.
