"It's Discrimination" was a line that immediately struck me and took me off-guard, and it's a line that has never left my mind since. It was such a fascinating way of viewing "human love" VS "unconditional love" that I had never thought of before, yet I could immediately grasp exactly what he meant just due to the nature of the show.
Really enjoyed Vinland Saga and really looking forward to whenever Season 2 comes along!

As a physics enthusiast, I am equally fascinated and horrified by the notion of "unconditional love". Such a "love" cannot make a distinction between human and non-human, between life and non-life, even between "nothing" and "something", as that would impose a condition. There is only one effect in all of Science that exhibits this quality, and it is the primitive, stochastical mechanism of entropy, the blind tendency of fluids to mix, of messages to become corrupted, and of our universe to eventually die in a vast, cold, pitch-black expanse.
If you like, there is indeed something divine about entropy, but in a disturbing, perverse manner. You cannot fight it. If you have any collection of more than two objects that undergo random movements over time, you get entropy as an inevitable mathematical consequence. Worse, you even contribute. By doing literally anything, even by your mere existence, you create heat and random motion and thus accelerate the increase of the total entropy of the universe. The ability to reverse entropy, this obscene "work of God", would make you into a demon, the actually thusly named Maxwellian demon.
Finally, there is a bizarre irony about it, the irony of the arrow of time. Entropy is the only known quantity that must always increase in time, for all we know, it is the only reason why time comes equipped with a direction. The irony is that, while entropy is the great equaliser - the ultimate destroyer of all structure, preference, and asymmetry - its existence, and it alone, gives structure and asymmetry to the dimension of time, preferring it to the spatial dimensions!

@@thabokgwele5268 I didn't know my thoughts on that was shared. I'm quite stressed you answer my drama comment lol. More seriously, it is because of the final fight between Thorfinn and Askeladd. In my opinion, either he is badly treated by the author (it is possible, cause sometimes you just mess everything in character development), either he kinda hates the fact that he is ugly too as a human. I'm not saying he feels guilty for his immoral actions, but that he lived the same low life as the men he hated. I'm not even sure if he even truly loved his baby berserk mate as a true friend. You know askeladd is for me the most complicated character of vinland saga. Thors is quite stoicist/buddhist in his character development, I mean he's the classical violent guy who then tend to leave a higher life such as having children and teach them deep and simple values (the author is very inspired of christianism too, except for salvation rightly because of Knut's speech). And Knut himself offers you his philosophy on a plate so that's quite easy to explain.
If you want to share to my ignorant ass your views over Askeladd, I would be glad of it.

This is one of my favorite themes in Vinland Saga.
It feels like too many series idolize the idea of love- portray it to be an absolute thing, something that is the end goal for everyone.
Vinland Saga brings out the dark parts of it. It makes the idea of love out to be not as fun and wonderful as it is on the surface. And because of that it makes love seem all the more beautiful.

Everyone obsesses over Askeladd but Canute is criminally underrated. His ideology is fundamentally different than the one Thorfinn developes later but he still embodies some of the values presented by Thors early on. His inclusion simply adds so much to the core themes of the story and when I see people claim he's lame because he's weak and he cries it makes me very sad

But where Thorfinn has the chance of softening his heart and regain compassion Canute is the inverse of this as he deals with the turmoil that comes with the brutality and pragmatism needed to lead in a viking age where conquest brutality and betrayal run rampant and where compassion is seen as weakness.

There is only one way to heaven and that is through Jesus Christ, any other path leads to hell, Buddha is dead, Mohammed is dead but Jesus Christ is alive as he rose again on the 3rd day and is seated at the right hand of the Father and he will one day come back to judge the living and the dead.

Violence fulfills another need for human psychology- quick and tangible results. But the instant gratification, as you say, is filling the road to peace with corpses.

Canute's awakening moment is often signified as Vinland Saga going from great to epic (well it literally has saga in its title). But I think, the scene worked so well especially because of that village girl from a few episodes back...where she watches her family get brutally murdered, and expects punishment for sinning, but gets nothing. She found freedom in the fact that there was neither punishment nor salvation. And then Canute spells it out for us..driving in that point harder. Both had uncovered the hypocrisy of religion, one by finding no salvation and one by finding no punishment.

Selfishly loving someone is part of what real love actually is. To want to hold someone close to you is to cherish them. To know someone deeply is to love them. But to forgive someone you do not know may be inherently the most powerful part of love there is. Like snow falling to the ground or a tree dying peacfully without remark. Loving someone or something despite what you lose or gain is in itself the true essence of the word we call love. Truly there is no discrimination in human love made right. Within "human love" is the ability to exert your own grace upon the world. And grace is what its all about.

in essence I can kind of see it in how we put the needs of our family before everyone else even ourselves
but “Family” can mean many things for good or ill, related or not
in the end Love in any form is all we have and the bonds we make while fleeting is what connects us from here on earth to…

i remember reading the manga and this scene really left me contemplating what love really means. when all you've seen of love is it portrayed as this beautiful, ultimate aspiration you work towards, when suddenly this series comes into the table and is not afraid to bring out the hypocritical aspect of it to attention, that in turn makes the love we share that much more important and how truly human we are by not being able to encompass care towards every possible living thing, i'd never seen it put that way but it resonated with me so much. i think it's when vinland saga really captured my attention and went from great to truly amazing to me

I believe the story eventually will try to answer the question of whether to aquire peace one needs to fight his way through it till the end (Canute's way) or to not fight anymore (thorrfin's way)

    • @kpetalis
      @kpetalis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

My take is that it won't give a clear answer because there isn't one.
To not fight at all is the ideal and if you can somehow protect your people and find a balance with your neighbors that will allow you to live in peace, that's great. But that is realistically impossible, no nation has certainties after all.
So, I believe that Canute's way, to fight and bring everyone in the vicinity under your rule and sphere of influence so as to create a community that live in peace under the same rules and way of life might be necessary.
In sort, strive for peace as Thorfinn, but be prepared to go to war like Canute is the only realistic option we have. Or as the Romans used to say, Si vis Pacem, Para Bellum, meaning "If you want Peace, Prepare for War".

Anyone interested in this should reference Nitze's concept of immaculate perception.
"This parable speak I unto you sentimental dissemblers, unto you, the "pure discerners!" You do I call-covetous ones!
Also ye love the earth, and the earthly: I have divined you well!- but shame is in your love, and a bad conscience-ye are like the moon!
To despise the earthly hath your spirit been persuaded, but not your bowels: these, however, are the strongest in you!
And now is your spirit ashamed to be at the service of your bowels, and goeth in by-ways and lying ways to escape its own shame.
"That would be the highest thing for me"-so saith your lying spirit unto itself-"to gaze upon life without desire, and not like the dog, with hanging-out tongue:
To be happy in gazing: with dead will, free from the grip and greed of selfishness-cold and ashy-grey all over, but with intoxicated moon-eyes!
That would be the dearest thing to me"-thus doth the seduced one seduce himself,-"to love the earth as the moon loveth it, and with the eye only to feel its beauty.
And this do I call immaculate perception of all things: to want nothing else from them, but to be allowed to lie before them as a mirror with a hundred facets."-
Oh, ye sentimental dissemblers, ye covetous ones! Ye lack innocence in your desire: and now do ye defame desiring on that account!
Verily, not as creators, as procreators, or as jubilators do ye love the earth!!
