During our recent 6 night 7 days Kashmir tour package we visited shankaracharya temple in the evening, abut 4 pm. It was a rainy day. Best time to visit Shankaracharya temple is evening or morning. Best time is 4 pm entry and 5 pm. Shankaracharya temple timing is till 8 pm as per website, but entry to public will be stopped by 4:30 pm . so its better to enter by 4 pm and spend one hour for this.
Shankarachaya temple is located in srinagar city itself , in a hill called shankaracharya hill ,adjacent to the dal lake , the road to shankaracharya temple starts from ghat no 15 of Dal lake and is at a distance of 5 km from this ghat. Need 10 min drive to cover this 5 km. Shankaracharya temple is at a height of 1000 ft rom valley floor and more than 6000 ft from sea level. From parking area we have to walk 200 mtrs. Security check by CRPF. There are 240 steps from there to reach temple. during this steps we will get partial view of Dal lake.
Shoes / slippers not permitted inside the temple. we will get a good view of srinagar city from temple top. In this concept its not only a temple , its one of the best sight seeing point in srinagar too...
This srinagar Shankaracharya temple dedicated to lord Shiva and Aadi shankaracharya visited this temple and had a Thapasya near to this. Aad shankaracharya composed his masterpiece Soundarya Lahari here.
