Yes it's hard to imagine how so much carnage could have happened in such peaceful looking place. It's an incredible place. I'll probably never go there but would like to.

this was a totally unplanned stop on our trip- you never know where you will end up. That is why I like to pull up a map when we are traveling and just see what is around - those little surprises are what make traveling so fun. - I was amazed by nature's ability to recover after such a devastating battle took place here. The Ranger said the water & the land was poisoned for several years after the battle, but now if they had not placed monuments I would have never know that anything happened here

@@LetNewAdventuresBegin Wow , I really admire your spontaneity. Not everyone is so free spirited.
I am thinking about planning to be more spontaneous sometime in the future , but I have to consider all the circumstances before I take the leap. lol

@@muddyboots1764 😁 we are actually really big on planning things, but as you may have seen in other videos most of our spontaneous things happen when plans fall through, or the weather does not agree with our plans- we are somewhere in the mid range of spontaneous- we go in with a plan, but try to keep the plan flexible & try to be prepared for contingencies - the people that quit their jobs and drive off into the sunset with $100 in their pocket give me anxiety 😂🙈

You passed right through our little town, between Boonsboro and Sharpsburg! I am the Mayor of Keedysville MD. Love the channel!

Hi Mayor- you live in a great spot! we were just planning on going through MD on the way to VA but liked it so much we decided to slow down and enjoy it- one of my favorite things about travel- when you find those spots that surprise you 😁

I am so glad we stopped here- I remember learning about this in history class, but it just does not have the same impact until you stand on the ground where it happened

We were told that Antietam Creek ran red from the soldiers’ blood. It’s hallowed ground, like Gettysburg. What struck me when we were there was that it was a war between brothers. No war could be worse.

yes the ranger told us that many of the families left after the battle because the water and the land could not be used for several years

I will put that on the list for our next trip in Virginia- we like to see a mixture of nature & history when we travel so Virginia is the perfect state for that! Thanks for the recommendation & we enjoy your Scamp videos!

Since you have visited Antietam you should also Goto Gettysburg . It not that far from Antietam .
As you found out Maryland is full of State and National Parks. If you stop at a visitor center on the highway they have Scenic maps of Maryland, Virginia . The hiking trails are marked, the Kayak launch sites are marked , camp sites are marked . With that said. The amount of history in the area is amazing. You definitely need time on your hands if you are a history buff.

we were trying to fit Gettysburg into this trip, but just not enough days off work to make it all happen, so maybe next time. Patrick when there with his family when he was younger but I have never been there. I would like to make sure we get enough time to really explore the area- it is challenging to fit things in one week per year!

@@LetNewAdventuresBegin Well just so you know. The very end of the battlefield is now an outlet mall. It is haunted or at the very least is home to some paranormal activities.
btw You were also close to Washington Monument State Park. The first park in the 13 original colonies to have a tribute to George Washington. That park has the hotest showers on the Appalachian Trail. Most Boy Scouts in the area have spent time on the Trail

thanks John, we try to make the videos informative for those that would like to visit or just to learn about the area...but you should see how many takes I have to do to get the voice over done correctly 😂 it is a process!

As usual. Excellent video. It's seems that the next video is better than the last. They all have been great. Thanks
Question: how did you come about the names for your home and the scamp. If you had said before, I missed it. Just curious.
Antietam is a beautiful park and it is so cool ro be able to have the convenience of your "home" with you. Makes it that much more worth it. Keep up the great work, have fun and be safe.

each video we create helps us to learn things and get more comfortable with our own style 😁 we are enjoying the process & really like sharing these experiences with everyone! The Scamp is named after a very special lady- Patrick's Grandmom- Doris. She loved travel & adventure! There will be a special episode in the future where we explain that better. The tiny house is named "Stella" because it means star & I love the compass rose star- the sign of travel & finding the right direction. (although sometimes we joke that it is named after the beer...but that is not the case 😂)

Thanks Debbie, yes it is worth a visit- a beautiful area and lots of history - there are some other historic sites in that immediate area that we didn't have time to check out -but you could easily make a full day of it

Hallowed ground. Maybe the most important battle of the Civil War: Union victory here provided President Abraham Lincoln the opportunity he had wanted to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, making the Battle of Antietam( Sharpsburg) one of the key battles of the American Civil War.

glad to see you like the historic content- we didnt plan this stop, just thought we would check it out because we were in the area and I am so glad we did. I was not much for history in school, but I found that I am really interested when we get to visit where it actually happened- gives a whole new understanding & appreciation

Cemetery lore: Civil War dead of the victors often had a proper burial while the vanquished dead ended up in pits.

    • @LetNewAdventuresBegin
      @LetNewAdventuresBegin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

the Ranger told us that last year a hiker found human remains at the edge of one field after a storm. There were so many bodies it was difficult for them to effectively bury all of them- especially when working with man power and shovels
