    The 'X' table/stand is a common automotive body shop portable work stand... used for holding body panels, doors hoods & trunk lids while removed from the car. Various companies make them. Saw them at Harbor Freight the other day; $25 or so if memory serves me correctly.

      Was actually going to buy a rolling cart to put surfaces on until I saw this, I have a pretty sturdy xstand made for pianos that will probably do the job for now (what's nice is adjustable height on the x stand since I won't be able to raise my current overhead rig by much).

    Found this today. We have a big FOBA too and yes never leaves the studio although some rental houses will ship one to a location but so heavy and actually kinda dangerous to have around inexperienced crew. I'm shooting tomorrow at a client's studio which is so small and has a rickety old studio stand. A few shots will be overhead and I am bringing an extension for the studio stand arm but than realized there must be some rigging using c-stands and that is how I found your upload. Looks so simple and easy. And of course this client has pandemic cutbacks so for the first time with them I'm solo without an assistant. I shoot by myself all the time in my studio but I know the gear and space like the back of my hand so I think using your method will be a good help. Thanks.

    Tony, I've watched EVERY overhead setup video on TH-cam.......well, maybe I missed a few :( and yours is the best! Even better, I already had light stands, superclamps, a spare ballhead, a table etc. I initially went with the 2" conduit, but since I won't be gutting and dressing a hanging hippopotamus, I decided to exchange it for the 1.5" conduit which seemed to fit my style better. I only needed a 4' length, so I put away the remaining 6' section in case I need it in the future. I've got two safety cables on the way to my home. The Manfrotto 1004BAC stands are not the most stable but I think they will meet my needs. Then again, maybe a couple of C-stands are in my future. Anyway, thanks for making this fantastic video which has been so helpful for my home mini-studio. By the way, that 2" EMT conduit that was $15 when you made this video is now $45!

    I was wondering about the weight of the camera+lens+ a Manfrotto quick release head, the super clamp doesn't go all the way around pipe. Do you ever have any slippage? I shoot days sometimes weeks. I have Manfrotto Super Salon 280 Camera, but I like your setup simple and I don't have to factor the giant mono stand,

    Great alternative to a hardware pipe you can order from BH would be an autopole extension. They are aluminum and light weight. Manfrotto 034. Not cheap but I've bought a pile of these used for $10-$15/ea and that's what I use for any lay flat stuff I shoot!

    Hi Tony, thanks for the tutorial. Question: could I use 2 Manfrotto 1004BAC instead of the 2 C stands on the side, do you think is a good idea as well?

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use whatever you have. I like c-stands because they have a low center of gravity.

  • @sharilsabtu3130
    @sharilsabtu3130 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a ballhead and a bald-ing head too as a bonus. Great vid regardless. Informative.
    Qn: do the weight of the tripod stands used an important consideration or an adjustable wide legs spreads would be enough?
    I am trying to go with offsite setup without carrying around weight bags.

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’ll work, but C-stands are lower to the ground and therefore a bit more stable.

    Great setup. Do you think a super clamp would hold a larger camera with small fluid head? Say, a c200?

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No doubt. Those super clamps are strong. And you’re not really moving things around once it’s setup.

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I want something sturdy. That won’t move when people walk around it or even bump it.

  • @pachuco714lalo
    @pachuco714lalo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are also collapsible workspace tables you can buy at most hardware stores; usually go for $30 US. They aren't height adjustable but the c stands or light stands you mount your camera on are.

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great idea. I actually have several adjustable height saw horses that I’ll use too. But this was the option I went with for that particular day.

  • @philindeblanc
    @philindeblanc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I should get rid of my sawhorse stands and use one of those, reasons:
    1. Its a one piece design
    2. likely lighter
    3. foam top covers help it to be non slip.
    4. Key feature, you can lower it.
    5. More sturdy than plastic.
    6.They look better and can store easier than sawhorses
    SOLD!

    What do you think about junior stands, 4 1/2" center lolli-pops, grid clamps with ears, 6' speed rail (1 1/4"), and a grid clamp with 3/8" male thread?

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Whatever works. I doubt a lot of people have most of that stuff. But as long as whatever you build is sturdy, then roll with it!

  • @AutoFOCUSED.
    @AutoFOCUSED. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I haven't done any top down shooting yet but I tested to see if it would work. I just use a c-stand with a sand bag and put a strong grip with a ball head attached to it and attach my camera. Played around with it and it's not as stable as your set up but it holds up.

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The c-stand method will work in a pinch. But when you have people moving around the set, it’s nice to have a more secure/steady option.

    • @tonyroslund

      You can focus with most tethered applications. Even products like CamRanger allow you to focus remotely.

    Also would thin aluminium tubing be an ok alternative?

    I have an $80 tripod that’s Bolted into my wall that comes out 5 feet or so and is crazy adjustable - this is just overkill

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bolting a tripod to the clients wall when on a location shoot might be “overkill”. I do a lot of top down food shots, which are typically done at the restaurant or similar place. This setup can also be done for less than $80 (if you use inexpensive stands). But thanks for the comment.

    • @one1815
      @one1815 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Roslund yeah I’m saying you could have a simple stand that it bolts onto it’s a boom tripod it’s super sweet and adjustable. Don’t have to attach it to their wall 😂

    • @tonyroslund
      @tonyroslund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the whole point of this setup, as I say in the vid, is for stability. When you have lots of people on set, things tend to get bumped, knocked over, moved, etc. This setup is pretty solid, but there are definitely more portable/lightweight/simpler setups.

    • @one1815
      @one1815 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Roslund that’s true actually - never thought of that. Mine is in a private studio so it’s different. Cool thing about being artists though is that we come up with solutions that work best in our unique scenarios! Good videos. You should have way more subs
