I read a review of this film the other day. They based their review of the story simply on the idea that the main character is trying to find this man she loves. And they completely missed the point of the film. This film is about more than the chase of love. It's about Japanese film history. It's about the struggles of life. It's about figuring out who you are, when you play a part for each different person you meet. It's about memory. It's about the chase we all take part in to find happiness in this crazy world. This film is a masterpiece. I miss you Satoshi Kon. I hope you are happy, wherever you are :')
Beautifully said. Too bad the great Satoshi Kon is gone. I would've love more films from him, but the handful of films he made are truly precious. This theme song is so beautifully innocent and makes it all the more sad that Satoshi Kon is gone.
My tribute to Millennium Actress. An animated masterpiece by filmmaker Satoshi Kon. Not only is it one of the greatest movies of all time, it's my favourite animated film. Hope you enjoy it, and if you haven't seen the movie, please do give it a watch :)
A beautiful edit, and a fabulous tribute. Knowing it so well, I was in tears before the first minute was over. (And a lot more followed!) I don't think I've ever seen a better movie, and more moving story. Absolute work of genius. (Your edit was pretty good too!) Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing. It's a terrible pity that in the US, animation is not taken seriously. This film, along with Takahata's "Grave of the Fireflies" are just absolutely excellent in my opinion. Great job!
ive just rewatched that film again and I cried all over again. I think I cry a little harder every time it actually aches inside knowing that her persuit after this man was entirely futile but she had no idea. its so heartbreakingly sad that she fell in love and chased after a shadow and just as she was dying she realised that it was the chase she truly loved. and even more sad was the fact that this man never new just how much he'd affected her entire life. like I really need a goddamn hug right now im STILL crying!
Yeah a remember the first time and the only that I cried so much at the end so much feels how a person affect so much on the life of someone and I feel sad because at the end he wasn't there anymore even if she just know him for a little time
I feel like she knew, deep down. I’m pretty sure she had this lingering thought at the back of her head, she couldn’t have been that naive, but carried on anyway, because she needed a reason to carry on. That’s why she says that what she truly loved was chasing him. It was an adventure. She had a purpose. Even if she was chasing after a shadow, it made her life exciting and unpredictable. She met people, lived her dream, made memories that were brought back to her when she saw the key. Most elderly people have this knowing smile when you ask about their youth. She could reminisce and realize that she had lived quite a life. That she can go without regrets. Because she had lived out of breath. And as she launches into the afterlife, she goes chasing after him again. When they tell her that she will definitely meet him again, she doubtfully says "who knows?" But it doesn’t matter to her anymore. She goes chasing after him anyway. Because then she has a purpose, something to look forward to. She doesn’t care about the destination, about meeting him, but about how she gets to where he is. This is human nature in its purest form. We all need something that keeps us going. That’s what makes it beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. She couldn’t even remember his face, no one would have chased someone like that for their whole life. I feel like she knew, deep down that she wouldn’t meet him again. But the uncertainty is what kept her going. It’s like she was wondering what she would find out next. Who she would meet next on her path to this nameless man.
This is so beautiful. This film is so incredibly important to me. Chiyo feels like a friend I grew up with, and in so many ways, that is actually true. I can't even make it through the opening bars of Chiyo's theme without crying. Thanks for this gorgeous tribute. :)
Thanks Satoshi Kon, thank you very much for this masterpiece, for this piece of art. Mononoke, Chihiro and other Ghibli wonders are not better than this beatiful film.
Damn... Damn damn damn... This is one of the very few movies I can call 'perfect'. Thank you for this, really making me living through all the feels while watching this masterpiece.
Thanks for the video.. it made me remember how great this movie was and still is. I'm in tears remembering it.. and now I might watch it for the 6th time...

Which music track did you use for this video? Is it from the movie's soundtrack?

@@nova-kiin Beautiful comment. I hope Chiyoko enjoys the chase in the afterlife and that she finally finds him.

If multiverse exist and there is some universe where Satoshi Kon is alive and still makes Anime then I want to go to that universe.
