The point turner is handy and the other side is for sewing on flat buttons (ones with no shank). The button is placed over the hole and the material on the other side. Then you see the button to material and the turner gives you enough room to button up the button without having the blouse to not pucker.

I never saw a sewing gauge before that could be so helpful, thank you.

The only tool I don't have is the expanding guage. I often wish I had one. Another tool that's handy but not often used is a hump jumper, used to get over the multiple layers of fabric- like sewing jeans. Thanks for sharing your favorites.

I repair a lot of farm work clothes. The hump jumper is one of my most used and valued tools!

Oh yes, the hump jumper sure is handy when working with upcycled denim too

Instead of a humpjumper I just fold up a scrap of the same fabric so it is the same thickness and place that under the back of the foot to help go 'uphill' onto the thicker parts where bulky seams cross or to get started on a seam that it thick to to start with. I use it under the front of the foot as I sew down off a thick area to a thinner one which helps avoid the skipped stitch you sometimes get going 'downhill'. It's very versatile as you can make it in any thickness you need in just moments.

Having a hump jumper or "jean-a-majig" as it's branded changed my life!

I have the thimble and safety pins and I'm a quilter too so I have a bazillion. The thimble goes on my needle pusher finger, I don't hand sew without it. I used to have one set of those special safety pins, they were pink and I had boys, oh well. My mother had one of those chisels and I used it a couple of times, very nice and easier on the hands. For the expandable gauge I'm sure it works great. Thanks ror a great pocast

Burning questions answered: I have them all, too. But! I don't have a locking safety pin and had never seen one. So clever! And now I'm questioning why I have so many safety pins. 🤣Closet hoarder, apparently. If you go to the Dark Side, there are special safety pins that are bent looking that are easier to use through the quilt sandwich. I hope you are having the best time on your trip! I wish I lived on the East Coast, so we could have met up for a coffee, fabric shopping, or gone to a thrift shop, or two.

I have a couple of point turners and many thimbles; metal, leather, silicone, silver, and even one that fits in your palm for sashiko. I enjoy hand sewing and protecting my fingers is important

I have all 5 tools, but I could never get used to the thimble, so I never use it. I do a lot of hand sewing without it and without hurting my fingers.
A handy tool I use to pull the threads after serging and repair knits is a latch hook crochet needle.

    • @elizabethclaiborne6461

Using the thimble is about hand position. You can sew way faster with it.

      @avdm196 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@elizabethclaiborne6461 as far as I am concerned, I used to sew by hand for many years, before I got a sewing machine and never missed the thimble. And I am quite proficient, but that' s just me. Most people prefer using the thimbe.

Safety pins a must! But keep losing track of them! I do also have some bodkins, and they work well, provided you get it set tight enough! Point turner helpful, but kearned ways to fold for corners & using a pin from the outside for clean corner... Often wish i had a thimble! And love the buttonhole chisel--but don't use if the buttonhole is not as wide as the chisel! And just use a ruler & math for button position, marking up cardboard or paper since i never think about buying a spacer tool between times i could use it! 😂

Re the point turning of collars, I too have used a pin from the outside to create a clean sharp corner. It is especially accurate with slippery fabric I find. Happy sewing

I also use a point turner to press into small straight seams (like the collar you're wearing here) to make it lay flat. I also have far more safety pins i will ever use, even with my knitting! Still not really used to a thimble and I'm in my 70s, so I really should use it more!

Thimble is supposed to be on that finger, you’re good. Driving with the middle finger is how Saville Row does it, you can sew fast!
Rumpelstiltskin. Pricked her finger on a spinning wheel.
I have all those tools and they’re great!

I’ve had a Simplex for over 40 years, same one. I’ve just a vague recollection of manually needing to calculate my buttonholes or pleats, it’s never out of my reach. Not seen a locking safety pin, will look for them. Thanks! (I’m Deb too)

The cut out on the point turner is a button lifter, I believe. You are supposed to put the it between the fabric and the button so that you have a better view of where you are poking the needle 🪡 when hand sewing buttons onto fabric or knitwear. PS I don’t have one so I can’t be positive about whether it’s actually a handy tool.

Aurora debuted in Sleeping Beauty (1959) as the only daughter of King Stefan and Queen Leah. Angered at not receiving an invitation to her christening, an evil fairy, Maleficent, curses Aurora to prick her finger on a spinning wheel's spindle and die before sunset on her 16th birthday.
