      KazuoTV ey I know you have some hate but you do not need to show it, it makes you look like a pathetic ass. Especially when Japan is one best countries to live in, yes it indeed is strict but that is why it is so good, you rather go to american schools? Schools other than private suck there, thank you very much.

      Cherishing individuality is not high in their list of priorities there. Gets worst when you enter the workforce as just another member of the faceless mob trudging to work in packed trains every morning and working till they drop like flies everywhere. No wonder their suicide rates are through the roof, I feel depressed just talking about it.

      Not like I've been to Japan or anything, but I've read some Japanese novels that's been translated (btw I read in general so the cover got my attention at Barnes n nobles ) and lots of them mention a problem with the Japanese school system and lack of individualism. Like some students want to do smth diff but can't because of all the home and school pressure which causes them to suicide.
      I believe there are a couple manga out there that mention it too. In the slice of life genre .

      I hypothesize that the reason there's so much nature, happiness and peace in anime, is that it's a direct form of escapism from IRL Japan, which is covered in concrete, misery and shoulder-to-shoulder chaos.
      There's lots of flying and jumping in anime to counter the reality that Japan is basically a prison island full of stupid expectations and judgements that weigh you down.
      The romance in it is also a direct opposite of IRL Japan, where loneliness reigns supreme and birth rates are at a record-breaking low.
      Anyway, if I'm right, then it makes it extra-ironic that weebs would use anime as a documentary for what Japan is like, since anime is intentionally designed to be the polar opposite.

    I'm currently going to High School in Japan, and it's very different from what you described. No bullying, nice classmates, nice teachers that help if you need help and well, just a normal school. The classes are very passive though. No raising hands and answering questions, everyone just listens and the teacher explains. If you don't understand something, you have to ask the teacher after class, which means you don't slow down the learning of others, which is a problem in my school in Germany.

    Yo true, I had a japanese friend here in my home town and his ass was so complacent basically only knew how to follow rules and never think for himself. His parents had him on a damn leash and I did my best to teach him how to be an individual. He became more attuned to his own self which was good, but his parents though he was rebelling simply because he was being himself. I guess that is what happens when people come from a collective society and move to an individualistic one. Btw he was extremely shocked when his vacation was 3 months long and he had no homework. He moved away from my hometown a while later and last I heard he was in an ivy league school, but im sure he was being himself. His parents wanted him to be a Doctor, but he really lived physics. I am a person and I am not a child, I felt like I was in prison. I was one of the better students, I could even have done much better than that if the school system wasn't so retarded.

      Hell if anything it's more of from the stress of always working or trying too hard to be something they're not, whether in school or other, and the social stigma of fighting back when bullied. Whether at home, school or work they'll get bullied or harassed and expected to deal with it or leave. That's the real problem, ontop of the crabmental mindset that seems fairly common in those environments. Lack of individualism in school however is the least of concerns and problems.

    I think I am starting to understand why anime is so popular in Japan now. Anime showcases the japanese culture from a fantastical point of view, making it out to be this amazing experience and just downright unrealistic. The people who live in Japan use anime as a way to escape reality, as a way to convince themselves that japanese culture is the greatest thing ever. In such a homogeneous country, anime protagonists and worlds showcases the individuality the average japanese man feels like he lacks.

    • @jamless9630
      @jamless9630 6 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      Twisted Films No it's just to fit the plot of the story. It's like watching Disney channel and thinking that the school on there is how it really is in America.

    • @paunaic5460
      @paunaic5460 6 ปีที่แล้ว +104

      rysa lin That's the point. The plots are too nice and cute to happen in real schools, so they have to romanticise it, which attracts teens (especially girls) that would love to live or even just see something like that happen in their schools. This is normal in all countries but Japan's anime representations are astonishingly fantastic (as in fantasy)

    • @jamless9630
      @jamless9630 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Pau Naic I think you missed the point I was making, it's not some way to "escape reality" to make themselves believe they live in the best country. It's a story so of course it has unrealistic views (Which of course attract people and in this case, mostly girls). Just like every other childrens show. It's to make it more interesting. Not to bring people into their culture or to make people think Japanese school is so "fabulous". The kids in Japan work their asses off to get into a good ranked school. People already know this. Everyone can tell anime is unrealistic just like every other cartoon. The theme of anime is certainly different from other cartoons most of the time, you are right. But the point of anime is just like every other cartoon.
      If you read what the original commenter was saying, you would understand I was correcting his theory.

Everything is centered on "upholding farcical honor" by labeling everything that isn't normal as shameful and dishonorable. It's really a culture of dishonor. *That's why Kazuo was talking about way too many rules and policing students by preventing them from sticking together and making them fight each other by stratifying the student body in a way that upperclassmen rule and command the underclassmen instead of being equals.* This culture of conformity and fear of standing out is a serious thing prevalent throughout Japan. Anyone who suffers or lags behind is seen as a detriment to the harmony of the community, and is shunned.

    Japanese society values conformity, harmony, and honor. Individuality and dissent are discouraged. Of course they don't want anyone to stand out! Even the crazy fashion trends of Harajuku aren't real expressions of individuality. It more like, "Everyone else is wearing a fishbowl on their head, so I will too!"
    I do enjoy the romantic idea of a perfect Japanese school. We all wish we had the courage to confess our feelings to the cute girl under the sakura.

    Yo, dude this is prevalent not only in Japan, but across multiple Asian countries (if not all of them). You study in order to get reasonable grades, not to gain actual knowledge and construct your own personal identity, and have the ability to express your own opinions, thoughts, as well as notions. What the hell does this type of education even achieve? In the end, when you're out and about in society, nothing, absolutely NOTHING you learned would actually assist you!

      I've used to teach foreign students from Asia at Uni (courses like mathematical analysis or linear algebra), it's absolute horror because they tend to have zero understanding of the material covered in high school and they expect I'll give a big list of problems and solutions that they memorize and pass the test. After "education" in Asia they're basically in Piaget pre-abstract thinking phase. From what I understand after talking with some people that did college in Korea and Japan their higher education is taught in the same style where rote memorization of textbook is the king. It puzzles me how with this kind of environment some people actually manage to become creative scientists and engineers.

      One guy made fun of me cuz my japanese name is 改善(kaizen) which means ‘improvement’ in japanese but he thinks I’m not improving at 日本語 at all

      So that idiots actually open their books and try to remember what was taught in the classroom. Its just homework, in India you get 2 extra things in highschool, i.e, assignments and practicals, but not much homework though. And we get only 6 weeks of summer vac. We also have to give school entrance tests for top Highschools. So u have a better system than what others have.
      Btw by homework do u also mean assignments and stuff. Cuz homework here is just pure academics related, like solving questions.

    I'm Jamaican, this sounds like a lot like our school system.
    Well the Caribbean as a whole really.
    We weren't allowed to go places in our uniform after school unless we were with an adult.
    Idk about Japan but here it's usually for your protection especially if you walked home or took public transport.
    If people had beef with a student from your school, you could be targeted just because you were wearing the uniform.
    We don't have middle school tho.
    It's prep/primary school then high school.
    You have to do a big test ( GSAT ) to determine where you go to high school.
    When you get into high school, it's kinda all about tests and getting into college but top kids still had personally.
    Sometimes the smartest kids were the 'cool kids'.
    Edit: I am simply going off of what was described in the video. I don't pretend to know what it is like to go to school in Japan.

      Students are allowed to wander around after school in their uniform.
      Not quite sure about the beef part.
      Their middle school is actually called junior-high.
      School rules are exceptionally bad especially for girls, if you're trying to be sexy and cute with all the nail polish and dress above the knees, you'll pretty much get a detention straight off. And students bring obento which is like packed lunch. I'm pretty sure lunch time is about the length of 10-15 minutes??
      If you're any European/American/ African, 100% guarantee that you won't survive there for a day because the amount of homework you have. If you don't get your work done (even little ones), parents will be contacted immediately.

    Each school is different. There are good and bad schools both in Us and Japan. I guess the whole point is, that people he was talking about praise japanese school not knowing anything about their system. It fucks me up every time someone tells me, that they want to move to japan so badly, but in reality they are so used to our (Polish) school system, that they would be dead after a month there.

      people will adapt no doubt but many people underestimate how nations other than their own actually functions. Like the cultural differences and such. I went to school both in Asia and USA and saw massive changes to my learning. For once, Western nations are very lenient on students and educations that's for sure, of all the stereotypes, I think it is not arguable that asian schools do take things really intently. but one thing we must realize is that taking things seriously≠better. Like I've seen many people say they want to go to china because they have consistently gotten the best scores in most subjects in class so it must be very good education system, they also have the highest IQ of anyone. Obviously. doing 2 minute research will tell you that is all fake as shit. Chinese Communist Party only reports results from its top-scoring schools in Beijing and Shangai only meaning the Chinese results of which country's students get the best scores is same as if the USA took Harvard, MIT and Ivy league and call it "national average". obviously, even as common sense, do people actually believed 1.4 billion people in china were the smartest out of any one? the same goes with japan and many asian countries, obviously their results are not biased like China but they do things differently that I really love and hate at the same time.
      They teach you things they know will be on the test and nothing else so they are very strict with scores. This make the students very depressed and tense but also more hard working. While most western education is built on "well d is passing" while teaching more out of line ways. This makes the students lazy but it also brings uniqueness to them. Its hard to say which is better but the middle path of that is probably the best way to go.

    It sounds like you went to a crap middle school. I never heard of the "don't go to a convenience store" rule, but I can understand it. They want you to get home as soon as possible because that trip to and from school is part of the whole experience, thus the school's responsibility.

    • @ying9837
      @ying9837 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not really. The school isnt responsible for anything that happens out of school. The main reason is to keep the school's reputation. They dont want the public to see their students loitering around the neighbourhood, shouting and screaming in groups while in their uniform.

I know that the Otaku community is looked down upon in Japan, despite it being so popular in the west.

    People like this make me scared to ever mention that I'm half Russian and half Japanese-- because people like that only focus on the "half Japanese" part and say things like "Ohhh! That's why you're so kawaii!! > w

    Based on this video, I see a lot of similarities between schools in Poland and Japan. Learning patterns and books instead of critical thinking and stating opinions. You have to respect the teachers here too and most of the students have a fear of them and have to think of them as someone better. Bullies, check, classic slav bullies, drinking and smoking in in the school bathrooms. Making your days at school harder every day since the 90s. Sometimes ganging up on others after school. We also had a lot of homework during summer vacation except it was 9-10 weeks instead of 8. Besides, things like, not being able to leave the building while being at school. PE lessons in the beginning or the middle of the day + no showers, so you had to bear the next 7 hours smelling everyone and yourself, feeling like you're in a pigsty. PE lessons were more of a competition, the teachers never looked at individual's skills and abilities, so it didn't matter that you were good at something that's not at school, you had to be good at all sports that are at school. Not to mention that you could be a genious and have good grades, but miss a class 2 times, be late often or forget your uniform, oh boi, your grades were suddenly lowered because of shit like that. Stupid shit.

    Senmongakkou was the same with test. They defined the student with tests. Even though i did good and passed all of my classes it didn't mean S&@T when i failed the certificate exams. Japanese is my third language after my native pacific island language and english. Yet they required me to pass every single test. One of the teachers just reads out of the book and tells us to memorize practically the whole text book for the exam. And then another just sits and reads the book and randomly gets up and writes on the board and sits back down during the whole semester and never even gave us homework or classwork until the end of the semester where he gives us an answer sheet and tells us to read and understand cuz i will rearrange and make changes on the wordings of that answer sheet. That class was business theory!!! Imagine learning business theory in japanese never understanding the entire subject and being forced to take the final exam!!!! I mean come on!!!!

    I'm a Malaysian high schooler and we don't just get homework on vacations, we also need to to go back to school for club practice (almost compulsory). like if we get a week off, we have around 3 days of club practice to attend to, leaving us with 4 days left and homework to do, not to mention there is a lot of homework.
    we have class on saturday and no vacation the following monday which gives us 6 days of school per week. school hours start at 7:20 and end at 3:00 but if you have club you have to stay until 5:15. there are usually two club days per week. being a club member is fine but if you have a job in your club(president,treasurer, etc.), you'll find yourself doing endless filing and typing lots of documents and failing to meet deadlines only to be scolded by the higher ups. ( i'm a section chief in prefects and i'm constantly sleep-deprived trying to cope up with my academics and inhumane amount of club work.)
    Usually, I only get 4 to 5 hours of sleep per day.
    Fun fact, for prefects, five recesses are used for duty (class-patrol) or marching ( we have two recesses per day).not to mention there is morning duty as well which starts at 6:45 and ends at 7:30.
    Oh and you cannot bring junk foods, cosmetics, sweets,tic tacs to school. If you do they will be confiscated and will not be returned. Handphones are not allowed as well but the school will return your handphone 3 months after confisticating it.

      Lack of teacher authority and therefore lack of discipline in class, especially the big classes in crowded city middle schools (7-9 grades) are a nonstop circus. You can't learn shit in that environment. The amount of homework is decent, the myth about "no homework" is bull, but when you try to learn in an environment such as I mentioned with teachers not necessarily having time to tend to every student since they spend the whole time in the class to maintaining peace and order all the while trying to teach, you have to educate yourself after school, and go through the same subjects you went through during that day all over again in order to finish your homework. Standardized tests are in fact frequent too and there's a series of them at the end of 9th grade, one test for every subject so especially then the studying is nonstop. Then there's completely useless yet compulsory subjects like Swedish language. Vocational schools last for 3 years out of which almost half is completely useless because in stead of teaching students for jobs they want to apply to like they should, there are compulsory classes that have nothing to do with it. For example I got a degree on information and communication technologies and what do I get to study? economics and trade law, native language (like I didn't study 9 years of that subject by far already), gymnastics(?!) more maths, et cetera et cetera.. While I'm not particularily against those classes, they should at least be optional because none of that has anything to do with specific profession studies. And to be fair there was some very useful classes too such as entrepreneurship.

      I dont know how Finnish schools are currently (im 36). But when i attended school, it was a complete shit show (sometimes literally. I remember one time some boys from my class painted the walls and ceiling with shit). Bullying was rampant (it didnt help that the bullied kids got more detention than the bullies).
      Every day at lunch break students would have food fights (it was because all the teachers would eat in their own room while the students were left unsupervised).
      There were around 5 refugees in my class of 29 to 33 students. They were pissed at having to repeat the grades they had already finished (in their own country) so they mostly ignored the teachers. Still, when they got bored, they would randomly start screaming animal noises in the middle of class.
      As for teachers. Most of them were apathetic, but there was the Finnish language teacher that loved to single out a student and mock him in front of the class (that would usually take 20-30% of the class time). We also had a young woman be our Swedish language teacher that we drove to a mental breakdown and quit being a teacher (i think we were her first and last class of students). Some of it was because we were resentful about having to learn Swedish.

    Also american who lived through a Japanese school system. I had similar experiences and it was quite tough. The 6 day a week school days were manditory but in the late 90's the law changed and it became 5 days a week. Also, most education there was just rote memorization, they had hollow content and I like to call it 'education theater'. My experience in public school was, teachers and Senpais often harass you to feel good about them selves, and they justify it by 'teaching discipline'. They really need to change thier school system to keep up with the rest of the world.
