You should put a 3rd brake light on the tip of the boom so your towed vehicle knows when to hit their brakes harder.

Easier. Take an old tire and put it on de boom. So the cable goes through it. The thing being towed will be cushened by it.

I know Matt has talked about making a tow bar for the wrecker which would fix that issue as well.
Rory doesn’t run one, but Matt doesn’t have to pickup and set down the towed vehicle as much because the wrecker is more capable and Sand hollow has more ways out.

They make brake attachments for towed vehicles but they're usually model specific or just a big remote foot to press the brake pedal for you which might work in this case but would easily be bumped out of place I imagine.

The problem was the frame, not the bumper- the frame bent. Or, more accurately, the problem was THORR's method of recovering vehicles by dangling them half in the air while towing them over off-road obstacles...they complain about lack of attachment points, well how many vehicles are going to have attachment points that are going to be able to support that sort of strain?

    • @psychologicaltirefire8190

@AM D idk if stock Wranglers can even be towed like that with the stock backward and top mounted recovery hooks. I'd feel like they'd immediately slip off the THORR. Time to add a tow bar! I know Rory doesn’t like them, and they don’t work well in crazy twisted up situations, but there is definitely a reason for them and they are far better in 90% of what you’ll be doing and will prevent damage to the towed vehicle

    • @JohnFL

I'm not in anyway experienced in towing (I've been towed plenty of that matters)
Perhaps you guys could use one of those rubber tow bars to reduce the risk of collision with the boom and wrecker - also to stabilize the vehicle while towing.
And as added protection on top of that, maybe take some yellow foam pool tubes (or maybe something a bit denser) and attach them to the under side of the boom, the end of the boom and the rear bumper of the wrecker.
Could also get some heavy mats made (like the kind flatbed trucker drivers use to protect some cargo from strap or chain damage) to throw over the hood and grill of the vehicle being towed, further reducing the risk of damage in boom bump or tail slap. You could have some loops sown all over them so that you could throw it on a hood and use bungees to hold it on.

Matt, you need to build a pair of adjustable "stand-off bars" for the wrecker. Essentially telescoping pipes that you can adjust the length on. Build a mount for them on the center of the rear bumper of the wrecker and design ends for them that can be attached to the central mount on your wrecker and the outermost part of the front axle(s) of whatever you are towing forming a triangle with the wrecker at the pinnacle. They should be able to pivot up and down freely with a full range of vertical motion but with only a little horizontal movement from side to side once attached at each end. The central pivot at your bumper would make backing the towed vehicle up like a trailer rather than having it free to swing back and forth, etc.. This should prevent the towed vehicle from running under your boom and incurring damage to the hood, bumper, or grill. You would only use them once you have the stuck vehicle free and are towing it back on the trail. Just my .02 cents.

    Mechanical engineer here.
Matt, you need something like a simple horizontal push/pull bar between the boom and the connection point (bow shackle) to prevent the swinging.
You can make it folding up to the boom. Once you lift the car high enough you could fold that bar down and tie it to the bow shackle. Keep it a bit loose to allow some movement.
I have some ideas. If you contact me, I can send you a sketch.

This would be both for safety if the boom lines break and stabilization (left to right ) swinging motion of the towed vehicle. A longer boom might also give some more clearance for front to back swinging motion..

Y’all may consider looking at the off-road pintle hitches like what my old ‘52 GMC Deuce and a half had on it… It rotated freely with a heavy coil spring on it to absorb some shock front to rear. I think it was a standard issue kind of thing, if not I can still describe it in detail enough to build a replica.
Take that and a heavy duty variant of the draw bars you see RV’s using to pull Jeeps on the highway. Possibly even some military surplus ones for the 5 Tons. But use MORR straps to secure it to the lower control arms or frame instead of to the bumper. This would help keep the towed vehicle from swinging forward into the wrecker while the boom carries the weight. The swiveling pintle would let things flex and twist as well so you don’t have to be worried about rolling the towed vehicle with it when you flex out. … it’s only there to control the distance of the towed vehicle from the Wrecker.

So I see you’ll need to come up with something universal for the front/rear of rigs u recover. Something for your wrecker ropes to rub up against as you can see bumpers can’t handle it so you’ll most likely be grabbing down low and under like the A-ARMS/axle and your ropes will be rubbing on the bumpers. So rub protection for the customers bumpers but more so to protect the wrecker ropes. If you had set the parking brake just a touch it may have kept it from swinging into the bumper and the speeds you recover at I doubt would hurt the brakes as it would just be a slight drag. Just a thought but I’m sure Rory’s can explain what’s best as I’m sure he has it all figured out.

The wrecker is going to be a great addition to the rest of the fleet. Keeping the boom off the hoods will have to be monitored constantly. Going to have to keep the boom high and more cable out. Unfortunately that will let the vehicle swing a lot more, someone will have to be quick with the brakes to keep from hitting on the wrecker. It reminds me of how I used to tow and also get cars in the shop for repairs by running a chain thru a length of pipe and hooking up the chain underneath using the pipe to maintain space. I'm not saying that is your solution it's just one of my old time riggings. I grew up during the time period when cars had heavy chrome bumpers and you could use clamp-on tow bars and also clamp-on trailer hitches which Uhaul rented. Also I used to jump cars with dead batteries by putting the bumpers together and jumping the positive terminals together with the jack handle, that folded in the middle, from the screw jack. The first time it was a 'think on my feet' moment when I was caught with no cables and a lady with a crying baby needed to get home. Cars needed to be jumped a lot more back then come to think of it. Sorry about getting off the subject.

Thinking about the bumper bending, I actually think this is a problem for the Heavy Wrecker's recovery method more than the bumper. Towing a truck suspended in the air like that off-road doesn't just put static loads like if you were jacking from the bumper. The fact that it was dangling off a tow truck while being towed over uneven and hilly terrain put much greater loads and stresses, and repeatedly as well. You're gonna exceed the elastic deformation capacity of that steel and move into plastic deformation.
I have a steel tube bumper and no way I'd expect it to be able to survive being towed like that unscathed, especially because it's just attached to the same mount points as the regular bumper, it's not like welded to a ladder frame or anything like that.

Matt, you may have to extend the boom by about 24 to 30 inches. Watching this Bronco being towed from our perspective and the multiple camera angles it is rather close to the rear tires due to them being offset to the rear on the frame. Raising the boom and then dropping the winch lines worked, but by having the boom further rearward would reduce the probability of the towed vehicle swinging in and hitting the tires while motion. I was picturing you having to tow something larger than the Bronco, say a fullsize pickup or whatnot. I am not an engineer, I just look at things a little different than some people. The wrecker is looking good.

    • @fraidykat
      @fraidykat ปีที่แล้ว

No, he needs to add a yoke on a piece that holds onto the rear frame on either side that hinges up and down, so the boom cables aren't directly holding the vehicle. Yoke holds the vehicle, booms pull up on the yoke. Whole thing rests in the up vertical position when not in use.

Matt… just a heads-up… You are going to have to fabricate a longer boom. That way you are not riding the hitch too close to the Wrecker, and it will also assist with better angles for when you slump and climb around the terrain. A different method would be to have a rolling boom where the hitch can be hoisted onto the end of it and lifted with the boom itself.
    Just some ideas I guess.

A longer boom would require de-rating.
Some people have suggested a tow bar for that problem.

@@jamesphillips2285that would be a great place to fab up a good sized storage place! Do like a 80/20 split with the big side for equipment storage and use the small side as a cooler to keep drinks and lunch cold! Could go super fancy and plumb it into the cooling system so it could be a warmer in the winter! Lol

The soft shackle has been born again. Sailors like them because they’re lightweight, waterproof, stronger than stainless steel equivalent shackles, don’t hurt if they hit you in the head or the hand, and don’t damage things like the deck, rigging, mast or sails, oh, and they float. Four-wheelers like them for the same reason. The new lines are soo strong, but they do chafe! Even wire chafes but at no where near the same rate.

Almost seems like the towed vehicle should have the football so the driver of the wrecker can think about driving. Also wondering about all the hardware on the back of the wrecker, might need to find a better spot to stow the pintles, one less thing to crash into + more space. MORR will figure it out!

Any thoughts of a piece of tubing, round or square that would hang between the wrecker and towed vehicle to keep it from swinging into wrecker? A piece that has a welded chain on both ends, just my opinion and great work and videos!

So take this with a grain of salt, i am not a tow operator, purely my observations. When you compare the wrecker to a regular holmes style, typically the boom is a lot longer, and its pivot point is a lot further towards the cab. This means when you raise/lover it, the radius is much longer, meaning it does not get so much closer to the truck as it goes up. Being that you're main work is towing through the dunes, I would seriously look at a towbar/sling/underlift. You know from experience most cars dont have recovery points, let alone lift points. And as demonstrated in this video, even bumpers are not lift points. A setup to pick up the frame to tow would also negate the need for someone to be in the towed vehicle manning the brakes. It would not be hard to design a towbar that can swivel and pivot, to allow articulation on the trail. Just look at the design Holmes has used for around a century. As Rory always says, winches are for pulling, not towing.

5:05 he has quite a bit of clearance. He really needed a front bumper that could handle the tow & not bend into the grill 12:40 though I imagine his bumper-company will make the changes after this filmed-failure of their bumper design.

    • @SlackerU

Love to watch your video’s and know you know your stuff and have been towing forever. But there is a reason wreckers have sling straps even if it is just enough to keep the vehicle your towing far enough away to avoid damaging it’s front end on the crazy angles the largest off-road wrecker uses. While I am on a roll using the bumper ?? I know - but you showed us the bronco’s recover points on the frame. Those both used together with your skills would avoid the awkward conversation at the end. I am not a hater at all; you are all amazing and have the best recovery videos of all.
