    These are the real trip smith videos. I think we all love the feeling of being there for the progression of the journey and fun camp sites. Love the dory but losing the aspect of always needing to find a cool campsite is sad. Plenty of channels doing the living on a boat thing. I got a kayak and eventually a skiff from this channel. Moving to the bigger boat is great for family camping but we lose some of the nature moments from it. Just an opinion.

      +Mea Woodsman Thanks Mea! I try to have fun, without fun what would be the point? Lol, glad you enjoyed it. I really didn't expect it to be as "popular" as it is. I was thinking it was just going to be another good tip in case you forgot your toothpaste. But I was wrong lol Still made for good video though! Thanks for the comment Mea!

    Lmao 🤣 I love the Wilson reference. People who know me always used that reference as it’s my last name. I never seen the movie but one day I woke up in the the middle of the night to catch that part where his raft broke up and he lost Wilson 👏🏼👍

      +Florida Girl Adventures That looks a little like the swaunnee river in north Florida - @ 6min(later you talk about crossing the line so I guess that explains the similar landscape). Something great about getting out! You my friend are a goofy goober and I loved the video! What do you do? You think! I don't think Ive ever been bored always something amazing going on! You are the best dressed adventure guy I know!

    • @TripSmith

      I've had multiple people suggest the Swaunee. I need to get down there one day. Glad you enjoyed it and my funky personality lol. What do I do? I do construction and I'm a fire fighter.
      Sometimes hard to get bored on a kayak trip.

    • @FloridaGirlAdventures
      @FloridaGirlAdventures 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol, when I asked 'what do you do' I was asking as for those who ask us "what we do' when we are out kayaking - but your day job definitely explains the arms, and pulling through that shallow upper Pea! Hey you also have to get in on the Santa Fe if you're hitting North FL! Amazing clear brown like Suwanee, with huge cypress, what made it stand out are the white fossil shell lined beaches, these are fossilized snail shells by the ton and when you take a handful to dry and say bring home they turn to powder but are so beautiful on it's shore. I didn't get to paddle much of it sway.com/7P76NCVgQe6ukxrT this is the trip I took this summer which includes the sante Fe.

    I have not read all of the posts, so forgive me if someone has already posted this. Not to be a smart butt, you always have your life jacket with yo on the water, put a small Bic lighter, fire steel, and chap stick in your life jacket pocket. It will always be there and not take up too much space, and the chap stick is a good fire starter as well.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert31352 No problem Robert, comment away! lol You know, I started out with a fire kit in my PFD. I had a lighter, waterproof matches, Vaseline cotton balls, a knife and some random zip ties. The ziplock bag I had it all in leaked and ruined the contents and I never replaced it..... I like the chapstick idea, I'll add that to my next one. I think I'd like to get some lock-sack zip lock bags and put a kit in them, they are supposed to be tougher...... Thanks for the comment!

    It might be worth carrying a toilet scrubber brush with you to help clean the mud off your shoes. I’ve never heard of anyone doing it, or done it myself, but it seems like a hell of a tool to keep tied onto your boat. ...It’d make a good backscratcher and prop for a few other jokes too! :D Have fun out there and be safe.

    Always pay attention to how the locals a fishing where and the bait if they will tell you. That way you can catch some! In alabama brim and crappie are your best eating. Or even catfish. Bass if you have to. But small red worms or crickets are the way to go. If you want to catch bass the a Texas rig with a u-tail is great all around lower!

    I found out how to be super lazy for a trip! You may buy like 4 Subway sandwiches fully topped with every single vegetable and condiment they have (except mustard, oh God please no that wouldn't taste right in this recipe) and seal 6" sections in zip lock bags and the mayo and vinegar keeps the preserved sanwiches moist not dried out for days and days. One for supper, one for breakfast, (can get tuna and also one different kind for variation, lunch meat trio) and then just whatever snacks for working/playing. Then it's no stove nor fire needed in hot weather, just water and tea or coffee drinking. Just clean water is DELICIOUS and when in the Wild coffee isn't even necessary since coyotes can wake you up at 3 or 4, plus it ain't exactly the rough life. Thank ya for sharing the vacation and advices.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! That would be delicious! I love all the veg's! I'd be worried about the Mayo though, doesn't it get almost poisonous?
      That would be fun to try though. Yep, not roughing it anymore!
      You are very welcome, thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @scottgross3217
      @scottgross3217 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      L.o.l. No, it never hurt, but I suppose it has rottable ingredients, true...maybe skip the mayo. Hmm. & you're the one who drinks straight from springs unfiltered! Ha.

    Tip 1: if you want to catch fish on a river system, don't use plastics. There is a wide array of fast, moving baits that work with great success. Here are some: shallow crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, frogs, torpedos, jerkbaits,beetlespins. Tip 2: Don't use push buttons or spincast reels at all. Sorry, but they are easy to break, and they have slower gear ratios. Tip 3: throw up in the junk! On the pea, there are a lot of fallen trees, pockets in bends and rock flats, and pools where springs flow out of. Bass in creeks and rivers tend to become ambush predators, so they sit and hide and let the food come to them. Hope my advice helps.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great advice! Thanks a ton man. Maybe I'll put these to practice one day!

    I can't believe any sane individual would give this a thumb down. This is great stuff!! And practical advice to nature adventurers. I hope to meet you some day, Trip. Maybe on the river! Have you done the Conecuh River yet? Several friends and I plan to launch at River Falls for a paddling/camping trip from March 28-April 2, 2016.

I hope to plan some group trips in the future with open invitation to all so you never know. I have not.... I'd like to as it's not far away. I haven't done much research on it but I should and I will. If you can remember to, let me know how the trip goes and what the river is like. Yall have a good time!

    Next river trip, try trot lines to catch catfish. If you don't already know what trot lining is, do some research. It's a great way to get something to eat just about any time of the year.

      Thanks for the suggestion! I've set out trot lines and been jugging in the past. Enjoyed it and caught some fish. I haven't set out a trotline in quite a while. Once I set it up, how long should it be out before checking it? It seems like I remember they catch a lot of catfish, do they generally catch anything else?

      +SailingandSuch That's great news. I wish you great success in that endeavor. I am looking forward to retiring from my career in law enforcement soon and have plans to start my own TH-cam channel as well. The Mississippi coast is filled with tons of attractions to suit any tourist desires that you have. Beautiful beaches and rivers. Hiking and biking trails. Desoto National Forest. Numerous casinos. Museums. Tons of quality restaurants. We even have a brand new minor league baseball stadium and team (Biloxi Shuckers) if you like baseball. You name it, we probably have it. If not, we are only an hour drive away from New Orleans, LA. They will certainly have what you are looking for.

    • @kevinfayard7790
      @kevinfayard7790 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin Fayard I forgot to mention that we have islands and bayous as well. One of the islands (Dear Island) is only a ten minute paddle from the beach in Biloxi. Much like the island you visited in Panama City, FL. Several others are located a few miles out into the Gulf of Mexico, but are even more beautiful. One named Ship Island even has a brick fortification (Fort Massachusetts) on it that was built in the 1850s and saw action in a single engagement with a US Navy warship during the War between the States. Between the multitude of fresh water rivers and bayous, and the open gulf, I guarantee you will land those fish that have thus far been so elusive. LOL. And yes, we have tons of those Blue Claw Crabs that you love to eat.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, sounds like a good spot huh? That brick fort would be pretty neat. Blue crabs are definitely a plus I'd say. Thanks for all of the great info! I hope to get over there one day. Great vid Trip. Love watching these. Loved all the little water falls off the river. s you were looking for the phat lighter, you passed a river birch. It also is good for fire starting. I was going to tell ya that when on the river look for areas the fish can get away from the flow of the water, then use your lure to catch a few. If it's cold, just move the lure very little. The fish get very slow and lazy in cold water..... put a worm on there. That should at least catch ya some pan fish.
    I want to make one of the gear hangers you made. That's very handy. Thanks for another great vid man. Looking forward to seeing more. If you get a chance, look up the Edisto River in South Carolina. That might be the first river I do. Great fossil finds as you make your way. I've found some nice shark teeth. maybe we can plan a group trip once I get all my gear sorted.
    I will have to message you on your FB. I ordered some stuff from your Amazon. I also have the Olympia TG 860 now. The Kelty 12X12 tarp and a pretty good start on my sleep system. I plan on ordering a couple more items from your Amazon store. I'm looking forward to making some vids like these. I have no clue how to edit or build a channel. Just starting to research that.

    I enjoy all of the videos that you do but after watching the lower pea river trip I noticed you talking about how you wanted a kayak with a day hatch and also a skeg versus the rudder setup also you were talking about a WS tempest I saw a great TH-cam video comparing Chatham 17 and tempest 17 basically here's the break down lots of gear and slow flat water tempest high currents high wind high energy in the water Chatham but both hold value extremely well I know of a yellow Chatham 17 in Pensacola Craigslist for $700 just to let you know

      +David Wagner Thanks David! You know, I've seen that exact same video and it's really a good one. If it were not for that video I probably would have already snatched up that Necky kayak you are talking about lol. I saw it but I'm holding out for what I'd like to use for long term. I know if I got that one I'd probably end up looking for another.
      In the video he talks about how the Necky has a smaller hull and not as much internal storage which is fairly important to me. They both seemed to be about the same speed to....
      Thanks for mentioning it though, I really appreciate that.
