I do but its mixed feelings really.. As a Marine of "the time" the video of it all looks pretty cringe. Uniforms and gear look all fucked up. One dude running around in his skivvy shirt, everyone just wearing a LBV and not flak jackets, and when dude put a tourniquet on fellow marine he went into his Vietnam pack for his first aid kit.. which no.. just not it would have been on his flack jacket or LBV. It looks like a cheap Indian action movie lol. BuTTT that being said I guess I can appreciate the effort to tell the story.
Honestly, the savages from the insurgent, and that area of the world are pretty dumb and aren’t very well-trained. They just believe weird propaganda and religious bull crap they don’t understand the technology or efficiency or ergonomics or anything. But I’m pretty sure in this case the rec dramatization was overreacting because that easily could’ve been taken care of via group of Marines. It must’ve been like. A perfect angle from like a murder hole or something. Because if it’s just a dude behind a barrel, come on. Plus fully automatic fire nonstop like that no way. The only thing most Directors know or TV show writers is things they see on call of duty or 80s Rambo movies. Nevertheless, those men are heroes for going in there and saving each other, even jumping on grenade dang man
Regardless what certain people think of Fallujah. Americans aren't going to let insurgents attack the Blackwater group and after we are going to stand by and let the next one happen to another unit.
I’ll never ever condone what the actions of the US government during this time, but I have massive respect for these veterans. The things they experienced are unimaginable for both of us
Actually in Vietnam the communists attempted multiple conventional attacks which all resulted in their total destruction. During the battle of “The Tet Offensive”, the communists suffered ~50,000 casualties with only 216 marines dying. Explains why they hid the whole war and why every country will continue to. You can’t really win a guerrilla war because even though we slaughter them in battle, they will continue to fight for their cause until the last man and the American public will slowly grow tired
"We basically laid siege to the entire city of Fallujah; destroyed like two thirds of the city; created like 200,000 refugees, & kil-led possibly up to 6,000 civilians. It was a really bad, bad moment & I was part of that, unfortunately. I mean, this was absolutely catastrophic for the people living in Fallujah... The whole mission was kind of structured indiscriminately. Our command told us that there were no civilians in the city; that everyone we were going to face in the city were combatants. They told us they were hardcore te-rrorists & that was actually not true. There were 50,000 civilians still in the city because we did not allow military aged males to leave the city. Anyone from age 15 to 55 were not allowed to flee the city. So they were forced to stay in the city and make due & then we bom-bed the city very indiscriminately for the weeks leading up to the siege - to the actual ground siege. Then during the ground siege, we used indiscriminate weapons and indiscriminate tactics. An indiscriminate weapon for example being the white phosphorus which you'd drop from the sky & it comes down in these big fireballs that kinda drift in the wind & cover not a precise target but a big area of land & we also used tactics like reconnaissance by fire which is house to house fighting, so if you don't know what's in a house, if you don't know if there's fighters or if there's anybody at all in the house, you fire into it first & then if you hear screaming or moaning or whatever, you can be sure that there are people in there & we would assume that they were combatants & then we would bulldoze the house to the ground. If you heard nothing, it was probably safe to enter. By definition, that tactic is indiscriminate and it's a war crime & this is how we conducted ourselves during the 3 weeks of this operation." -- Ross Caputi, U.S. Marine veteran, HuffPost Live video interview titled: 'The Siege of Fallujah Ross Caputi talks about his time as a soldier in Iraq'
