- We're back and we're finally trying Run 8 Train Simulator. As some of you may know, I am an ex-railroader and we see exactly how things compare to the real life Fitzgerald Sub.

Since PTC came about they took about all the fun out of running! They do t want you stretch braking or anything like that dynamic first then air! Worked for NS for 8 years and walked away in 2021! Wish it was the same railroad I grew up watching in the early 2000s
Shoot, I guess I didn't adjust the 70ACes enough; I knocked them down some for Update06 but I see they still got pretty hot.
Yeah, they seem a little on the spicey side. Thinking back on it, AC units were never ever a concern and with DC units we didn't care LOL.

Yeah, I've always felt very strongly about that. I've played a lot of games with really low-end graphics that were incredibly entertaining and immersive and then I've played games with the best graphics that I hated.

Thanks for the absolute wall of information. I can say without a doubt, you definitely knew your stuff back then. It's a shame the way they are doing things now. Some of it I get, but other things are just sucky...
Thanks! A little story about that pic with the B36. That was a 10,000 ton phosphate train with the B36-7 in the lead along with the two SD40-2s. That B36 was soo slippery pulling all that tonnage at slow speeds that we basically only made it 30 miles into our 201 mile trip before we went dead lol. We went up our first little grade at 4 mph which was never really an issue with any other train.

I bet the TE/loading profile is different than on those SD's, am I right? You gotta have locomotives that are well "matched" otherwise one just does all the work.
At least it didn't catch fire! (Or, is that just a Dash-x/AC4400CW thing?)

As a PC gamer of more than 30+ years, I fully agree that graphics don't necessarily make a great game, and I think many young gamers these days are too spoiled with "next gen" graphics engines and the ridiculous "need" for more than 60 fps at 4K. However, I do enjoy realistic graphics as much as the next person, so I will also say that that graphical improvements can make a great game even better. 😉 Thanks for the video! I haven't gotten into Run 8 yet, but this kind of content really helps with my information gathering process on making the decision to buy it.

At 10:40, shouldn't that signal on the right track be red?
EDIT: Ooooh, dwarf says red, so we go by that as it's a siding?
Thanks! Yes the dwarf governs the siding, the tall signal with the blue light (doll arm) governs the main. The doll arm signifies that there is another track between the signal and the track governed by the signal. Hope that makes sense...

We have to set 10 pounds and drag loads down hill for this brake health detector they have and I like it more than the old way with dynos for sure.
Right, I'm a big fan of using air in a sim setting on the Fitz, then on the west coast routes I wind up using dynos more on routes like Needles, etc. To me you just cant beat air when you need to transition to power quick. Thanks for the comment!

I think they might be getting rid of psr, I've been seeing more trains that are shorter, more yard transfers ect so that's good
Hopefully so as I'm not a fan at all. Its all about that one-man crew. Since they couldn't reduce it back to one man, they just doubled the trains together and eliminated a whole crew.

I'm more a military helicopter and airplane guy, but i have tried out some train simulators and it seems interesting and different.
I enjoy them. They are just a time investment almost always. Same as flying an airliner in a flight sim.
@@spurgaming5400 it did took me a lot of time in train sim, mostly with the brakes and getting the train moving.
@@subjectc7505 It's funny, for me getting the train moving and stopped hasn't been terribly hard. For me it's the "How do i get these cars where they need to be, the first time without too much BS" which is the hard part. The first time i ran L-CAL 0611 i missed Boron in Mojave by 2 whole sidings because i had no idea where TF i was supposed to go. That was a quit the game and try again moment.

Looking that getting this game. Not just for the driving but for the controlling side of it aswell.
I've heard of a few people where dispatching is all that they do.
This sim is great.

Or you could be like me and forget to knock handbrakes off...at least it was a local lol. Have to ask, with the grades and "barely enough power" coal trains, how often would someone get a knuckle or stall on the hills?
Out of all the coal trains I caught, I had one that got a knuckle or stalled though I remember hearing plenty of guys that did. I guess I was lucky as all my trips were step on, step off. Plus the AC44s were still new back then and pulled really good. I remember catching some that still smelled like fresh paint inside.

It's the little blue light, on an arm, off to the side of some of the signals. It means a track intervenes between the signal and the track governed by the signal.
How does this compare against Train Sim World 3?
Apples and oranges. Run 8 is a railroad simulator focused on realism and TSW is a pretty game
I've never played Train Sim World 3 so I honestly can't say but I was big into MSTS and then played Railworks back in the day and I can honestly say it's the closest thing to what it was like by far. One of the things lacking to me about the whole experience is just the lack of motion in the cab. Like at times it could be really bouncy and rough. Sometimes a lot of lateral side to side motion as well. SD50s were really bad about that lateral motion for whatever reason. Sometimes they would get to bouncing side to side and you would think they were never going to stop.
@@spurgaming5400 I'm not sure which game you're talking about for lack of motion but note that Run 8 has cab motion and the amount is controlled by the Sea Sickness multiplier under the Sim-Options menu

I have a question to all the run8 community. I'm new to the sim, going on 3 months. I bought the Fitz and Waycross subs 2 weeks ago and went over to the Hyrail website to install the cumulative 3 route update. After that the A Line shows up and loads with all the assets, tracks graphics, ect. Fully functional and operational. AI trains run through and everything. After the hyrail update I then performed the run8 updater app and some additional files installed. Is this normal? I mean I'm not complaining, that's $40 bucks saved. Just wondering if anyone else came across this. Enjoy your videos as well, very informative to a noob like me.
