Hadda chance to help a NASCAR gear(9' ford) guy, back in theday...and i am sure Ed knows about this...( like he said, " could talk for DAYS about rear ends") ...My buddy always finished a gear set up by "checking the patern". After shimming the pinion, and using the wheels to get backlash right...he would touch a tooth of the ring gear with a highly visable grease. Then spin the pinion through it. This would reveal the "contact patch"... It was the goal to have the area centered on BOTH gear faces(this IS an adjustable situation..pinion depth[shims] & ring gear center line[wheels] can move patch all over) After pinion drag tourqe...and ring gear backlash...THIS was his final quality control. Idea being the center of the pattern was the place of highest contact LOAD. Getting the pattern centered on the face made everything happy. Low noise...proper lubrication...plenty of meat to absorb and disapate heat.

Thanks for this video Barry T and Ed! It’s great that you show us your speed secrets. Back in the 1970s people were so secretive about their knowledge they wouldn’t share practically squat!

I appreciate that! To be honest, it took a little time thinking about it before Ed was ready to talk about it… But he finally realized that he would rather share than any of it being lost forever. I appreciate his generosity in that respect! Thank you for your comment, it’s true

I want to thank you guys for this video. My father has that same pinion depth finder tool. It's been a really long time since I watched my father use that tool. He explained everything to me on how it works and what the numbers stamped on the gears mean. Even back then I was still trying to grasp all the information. This video was very helpful for me on refreshing my understanding of the physics of the rear end set up with that cool tool. I do know that if you don't get the pinion depth in the proper spot the ring and pinion gears will be noisy and hum for the rest of its service. Anybody can set up the rear end gears but it takes a special person to set them up and have a nice quiet operation of the differential gears. Thank you again for this video ❤

This fellow is a sharp guy. I remember when i was a kid . My friend dad had a 67 Camaro that he use to take to Green Valley race way . He had a 302 he spun to 9500 i think . Anyway i remember Milton told me he use or i think i remember the rear end was a combination on Olds and Pontiac. Sometimes like 57 and 61 ..A combination of the two rear axle assembly. Seems he ran 6.18 gears . He i assume welded on the correct spring perches . I dont remember exactly which u joint he used . He told me but this all happened a long time ago..i wish i had that car now damn

The balance between hypoid angle and deflection from less, was always better with a dana 60. Now you can get 9 based stuff with 11inch gears

You need backlass to allow oil get in between the gears to lubricate them and pull the heat out to keep them from overheating .

I had a 1962 Corvette drag car that had a 57 Pontiac rear end, spool and axles narrowed a little. Super strong but heavy but ok for bracket racing. From 1981 to 1998 never had an issue. High 10s with 355 sbc, PG with brake and usually ran 11:90 bracket easy on parts and win more $s… thanks for video.

I understand that ALL '57-'64 Olds/Pontiac cases are nodular iron (aside from the limited early '60s aluminum Pontiacs). Only nodular cases Ford offered were the Daytona cases.

Love Ed's q&a vids. I was wondering what he thinks about usuing the new high horsepower air cooled horizontal shaft motors on the market? Specially Briggs makes a beast of a v-twin "marine" motor thats been dominating the gatortail swamp boat industry for past 5 years. Its under their vanguard brand i belive. I think it could be an amazing kit car power plant. Full pressure, full filtered oil system. 12vdc starter and a standard keyed shaft. I feel like this 75hp bombshell could have easily powered my old 1600cc vw w a pict carb. Advertised as having a whopping 63 horsepower back in 73'
