Doomguy runs at 50mph and dodges rockets but can't dodge a plasma grenade... give me a break. Also, how does one survive the BFG, that was a BS explanation if I ever heard one. My expectations for that channel were never high yet they managed to go even lower than I thought possible.

He survived the BFG with the bubble shield powerup, and you could argue that Doomguy was off-guard when MC threw the plasma grenade, although it wouldn't be a solid argument.

I really love the idea of a high intensity action game having a jazzy and groovy sountrack. These songs are bangers!
The game was originally just going to have all fast-paced metal sounding music, but Bobby Prince thought (correctly) that this wouldn't fit the pace of all the levels. He did a great job with it.

As Doomguy tore apart the demons of hell relentlessly, they spouted nonsense like "I'm Too Young To Die" and "Hey, Not So Rough". One demon thought to himself "there is no way around it, he is going to Hurt Me Plenty". And he was right, because Doomguy had a knack for causing Ultra-Violence. He is, without a doubt, Hell's worst Nightmare .

Sign of Evil at 19:32 was by far the best piece of music this game had to offer for me as a kid. The complete and utter sense of despair and DOOM it set within me is unforgettable. The music just suited the game perfectly with its sad, depressive and hellish tones.

I think it sounds too whiny. It drones on and it's annoying. Dark Halls fits the subtly hellish and somewhat depressing theme better.
Exactly my words... there was nothing more awesome to me as a kid than a hellish map in the shape of a pentagram with another pentagram teleporting to hell itself with that song so different from the others, suspenseful and despairing, playing in the background. there are a lot of other songs from this OST that get stuck on my head since childhood that I never knew where it came from but I was sure it was Doom ("Sinister") and others which were synonym to doom for me ("Intermission from DOOM"), but Sign of Evil is sure the one that marked me

Yeah, newer one too contrived? I used to shit pants when those Demons (the pink ones that would bite you) would come out of the dark a few metres away... in a horde. Even worse was if you were surrounded by barrels of toxic waste, so that you couldn't use the super shotgun to deal with 'em, or you'd nuke yourself... unless you let them get up point blank and eat every pellet, of course.

That's what i like about the old games...they didn't have much in the way of graphics and they forced you to use your imagination to as you said "fill in the blanks". Now we have games that have really good graphics but little in the way of imagination and that's sad really.

Mick Gordon took the Doom 2 soundtrack as an inspiration to Doom Eternal’s main menu.
Mick Gordon made a scream sound like sweet little dead bunny and even he managed to hide the doom 2 cover in a spectrogram.
Fun fact: It was going to be the main menu theme for the original Doom! It was always the plan after all.
I've only played Doom 2, but that game has level design that just blows me away. They are so creative with some simple ideas like keys and buttons. Modern games still might learn from it.

Oh yes, in fact after the launch on Windows 95, Microsoft found out that more people had Doom installed on their PCs than Windows 95. So a changed marketing strategy resulted in Doom 95 playable from Windows 95 directly without having to launch manually in DOS shell and then start the game. Also a advertisement came out with Bill Gates superimposed as the DoomGuy with a shotgun in his hand talking how great is Windows 95 is for gaming and also had a scene where Bill shot a enemy demon
I was there. Late '93 pulling doom in with my 14k4 modem on my 386sx 25mhz 2mb pc. Could not play it though. I putted it on 2 1.44mb disks, went to a friend with a 486sx 40mhz 4mb and played it there. We were shocked and in awe. Revolutionary! Will never forget that moment. Greeeets
Was the 386sx-25 too slow for Doom I? It played well on my 386DX-40 with a 64K cache. I guess being a slower CPU, a 16-bit bus, and no cache would be a big performance hit.

Same to me, never forget that first moment. People of today can't imagine how perfect (or like from other star) this game was. Also the abillity to play this in local network cooperative, was so awesome. Beside the fact, of the birth of the term 'DEATHMATCH''. I remember that I installed Novell light network software to be able to play it with my friend back in time. Later we found out, that we just need to load the IPX driver :-) FUN fact, almost all people started to play DooM with keyboard. But against a good player with mouse they had no chance. This was a really good time of my life, I was around 17/18 years old and we began to meet each other to play on local area network sessions. Of course most of the time to compete each other. But this game is still alive, there are awsome ports available, tons of good mods - You can even play DooM (ID-Tech1) games in virtual reallity with tracked controllers. DooM will never die - Thank you ID-Software!
I feel a little sorry for you, that you only got a 386SX when DooM came out. You could proably bearly play it, maybe if you reduced the screen size to a size of a post stamp and this togheter with the low vga resolution, that wasn't very nice - I remember when I saw DooM the first time on a Pentium, it run so smooth. With a 486DX and Vesa local bus or later PCI graphics card, it was also very smooth playable - Next great milestone in game history was the time of the 3D accelerations cards and then (at least for me) the age of virtual reality - what's next? 🙂

I first played Doom in '95. A few months before we had lost our home and had to start all over again. I was 42 my husband was 54. A friend gave me a windows PC, my first PC, and this game with it. I spent many hours in God Mode killing Pinkies with my chain saw, dumping the anger and the angst and the embarrassment at losing our home :) Doom kept me sane. I still love the game and the music. I even have the books which were written after the game was such a hit and read them every few years. Simper Fi Flynn Taggart.

I never played any of these games, I only heard about their huge impact on gaming history and watched some gameplays from it. This soundtrack, is simply badass as Doomguy himself.

If you enjoy first person games, sci fi, and puzzle elements. You should give it a try. It's a very smart game. Despite its aesthetics which in parts haven't aged well.
As of right now, there are many ways to enhance the experience without straying too far from the intended one.
The Bethesda re-release works well enough "out the box" and has the added bonus of supporting some great community made add-ons that are excellent.
It's dirt cheap to get as a bundle. Might as well get all the official content and play it.

4:40 - dark, atmospheric, stunning... what a game, and what a time to be alive when it was first released on shareware in the UK. Took best part of a week to get it running properly on our 486. I had to learn how to make a boot disk in the process. It was worth it.

Small nugget of info: In DooM II when you enter the final level, you hear some 'backwards masking', meaning, something is played backwards.The message says: "To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero". And if you're in single player mode, you can use the no-clipping cheat, and go inside the head of the demon, and you'll see John Romero's head on a peg-pole, and it reacts when you shoot at it.

I wouldn't say that. Doom is a masterpiece without a doubt. However, I can't let nostalgia get to me. There's a lot of RNG involved in the game, which isn't bad if you want a casual experience but for a competitive one, it's going to be very rage inducing since it is out of the player's control, regardless of their skills. I am not saying all RNG is bad, only the ones effecting gameplay, especially huge spikes of it. Luckily, there are ways to get rid of the RNG. There wasn't an official multiplayer either unfortunatly, but that's probably due to limitations. Keep in mind, I am talking about classic doom, not Doom 2016.

I'd have a pretzels and a glass of coke on the desk and I'd play the game in the living room while my mom was cooking in the kitchen and my dad was watching TV. This soundtrack brings me back. Oh the nostalgia... it was nice being a kid. Miss those days.
Doomguy was the man that made me braver and stronger, that man is so amazing. When ever I screw up a bunch in DOOM, I say "Alright, Doomslayer mode," which meant that I was actually trying better than my best.
DOOM I # 1 game of all time, period. Followed by DOOM II without problem.

Back in the days when I was playing Doom II I also ripped off the MIDI files from Doom WAD files. And you know what? The guy who wrote the music for Doom II was uncredited in the game. I learned his name from the binary files (his name is in every MIDI).
