東方斑桜 otherwise known as Touhou Ikaruga, Touhou Madara Sakura (or Touhou Trails of Sakura, if you want to try romanticizing it) is a Touhou fangame produced by 幽々燦々. I personally like to call it Yuyukaruga.
The game is obviously a homage to Ikaruga and you can see a ton of references to that game in the mechanics, level design and the music.
The polarity mechanics work exactly the same as in Ikaruga. You can absorb blue bullets when you're blue and you can absorb purple bullets when you're purple. You do more damage to an enemy when you're the opposite color of it and you also have homing lasers and enemy lasers that push you around.
The scoring system works completely different however. In order to get the most cherry and points from enemies you have to kill them with the same color shot. Killing them with homing lasers of the same color gives you even more.
There is no chaining or anything like that but speedkilling enemies is still important as it makes more enemies and enemy waves appear.
The way bosses work is that you get more score the faster you kill them. Besides that you also face a Last Word when you meet a certain score requirement . Failing a Last Word doesn't make you lose a life. The final boss does not have a Last Word.
Besides absorbing bullets, picking up dropped cherry also charges your homing lasers. Since you get more cherry from killing enemies with an attack of the same color, you get a particular balancing act. If you don't get enough cherry you also don't get enough lasers to produce more cherry, and thus more chances to use lasers.
This is the highest known score at the time of upload.

the existing Ikaruga "translation" is pretty bad so the opening doesn't say that to begin with, and no, the one for this game is modified in exactly 1 word.
the original is written in some old fashioned japanese so i have to rely on other japanese people's interpretation of it (one guy on a blog) but it goes something like:
"If I do not live, I will not die.
Even if my ideals are not achieved, I will not falter.
Thus, I will die with no regrets"
in this game the part about achieving ideals is replaced with making a sakura (tree) bloom fully (i know i said it only differs in one word, but it's extremely hard to structure it in english in a way that you can just swap the corresponding word like that)
and now you can see how this is recontextualized into yuyuko's lore

I can't play these Ikaruga type games, I lack the competence to switch colors effectively.

I'm not a big Touhou fanboy, but I'm pretty sure the difficulty level (狂氣/Kyouki) would be translated as "Lunatic", in keeping with official Touhou games.
Man, this game really needs an English translation. I'm struggling with those achievements and also feel curious about the in-game proverbs and dialogues since I don't know Japanese...

This fangame did well with complementing Touhou and Ikaruga. Second stage's theme almost brought a tear to my eyes.
This game isn't really that original, but the creator of this has done great job nonetheless. The same goes for you for beating this madness.

Someone should do a Touhou Ikaruga with Hecatia. Her gimmick of "Having three bodies" would be great.
That would work better with Radiant Silvergun, where enemy ships can be one of three colors.
Kind of a shame about that stage 4 boss fight. Really needed a bit of better play testing on that survival and last word. Puts bit of a damper on what looks like some decent ideas. I lol'd a bit at Alice's DFK Hibachi nod.
And the ending is depressing, more so than what Yuyuko's story already entailed. Not 100% sure but the TLB is either the seal on the youkai tree, or the youkai itself. Neither scenario bodes well considering she sacrifices herself at the end of.

Here's my take on the story of Touhou Madura Sakura:
Location: The Underworld
Date: Unknown
Something feld odd for Yuyuko, but what? Nothing changed about the environment, this was the underworld after all, does anything happen there? It was more like an energy, a new energy, flowing through her body. Yuyuko tried hard to use this new qi, and harder, and harder until finally something happened. She felt herself change qi. Like yin and yang. She is intrigued by her new power and considers talking to Reimu the Miko about it. So she tells Youmu to take care of her garden while she's gone and sets out.
The moment Yuyuko left the underworld, she'd already noticed that other yokai had already discovered the yin-yang qi too and are already using it, much like Yuyuko herself. Rumia, Alice, Aya, Hatate, all the yokai of Gensokyo.
After a lot of travelling, Yuyuko already had a change of mindset. She wasn't going to report the incident, she was going to solve it!
At that moment, Yuyuko finally find Reimu, paired up with Marisa and Sakuya. Seems like they're trying to solve the incident too.
Yuyuko: "Ah, Reimu! There you are!"
Reimu: "Hello, what brings you here, spirit of the Netherworld?"
Yuyuko: "I've discovered a strange qi and wanted to tell you about it, but I suppose you already know about it?"
Marisa: "Yeah, a tengu told us about it!"
Yuyuko could already tell Marisa was lying.
Reimu: "She's wrong, I discovered the qi myself and told Marisa about it then we decided to solve the incident because that's what we do."
Yuyuko: "Okay, but what about the maid?"
Sakuya: "I was sent here on the behalf of my mistress. I met Reimu and Marisa on my journey and we decided I'll join."
Yuyuko: "So that's why you're all attempting to solve the incident. I'll be honest, I was originally thinking of telling you about the incident but on my way there, I changed my mind, and I want to solve the incident too."
Marisa: "So you can come with us!"
Reimu summons a yin-yang orb and Yuyuko suddenly has a brainwave.
Yuyuko: "Wait, that yin-yang orb... Surely the yin-yang qi is tied to that orb!"
Reimu: "What? Why would my orbs be a part of this incident?"
Yuyuko: "The qi gives us the power of yin and yang! Couldn't you see?"
Reimu: "I'm telling you, I have absolutely nothing to do with this incident!"
Reimu had a very short fuse and she's blown it.
Reimu: "That's it! I'd rather we solve this damn incident ourselves and you never came with! So get out of our way, or we'll make you!"
At that moment, Reimu lashes out at Yuyuko, and Marisa and Sakuya join the battle. Yuyuko wins and continues onwards.
After a long day of wandering around trying to solve the incident, Yuyuko called it a day and decided to head back to the Netherworld. Perhaps she'll have a better chance next time but for now, it's time to cross the boundary to the Underworld once more and-
Boundaries...
Boundaries. The one who manipulates boundaries. Yukari Yakumo. Did she have something to do with the boundary of yin-yang qi? Time to find out.
Yuyuko: "Yukari."
Yukari: "Yuyuko, I take it you know what's happening?"
Yuyuko: "No, but I know you manipulated the boundary of yin and yang, I just don't know why you did it."
Yukari: "Well, well, well. And all that from the phantom of the Underworld. Yes, I did manipulate the boundary of yin and yang, but I didn't intend to do it intentionally for the other yokai. I really must have weakened the boundary so much that all of the other yokai were able to cross it. But you know what? I would just leave the boundary weak, but doing so would shatter the harmony of yin and yang. But I'd love to see one more show out of you. A final danmaku battle before I repair the boundary of yin and yang forever, whether you win or lose! "
And so it began. The last danmaku battle using the power of yin and yang. Yuyuko lost the battle but staying true to her word, Yukari repaired the boundary of yin and yang.
And balance was restored.
That secret butterfly was fun to watch, but its last spellcard is an eyesore.

Man... i'm NEVER gonna clear Twilight (Madness) Mode! I've tried Peaceful Yuyu (Inexperienced) Mode, and Dense Power (Skilled) mode, and I failed on them a LOT!

I didn't played Ikaruga yet but I really hated this Yuyusansan game, at the very first stage the enemies spawn at the bottom of the screen without giving any signal. For me this game needs too much memorizing to be played. Anyway great video as always.
In games like these you want to stay at the middle of the screen for the most part, especially when you can shoot backwards.
This is madness.

+Danny Emory Basically, the story is a spoof to the first episode of the anime version of Touhou, Fantasy Kaleidoscope, where Yuyuko steals spring everywhere to make the Great Tree she has bloom with flowers, as there are the characters that debut in the game and the anime. The first stage includes Rumia, who was in the party at the end, then the second stage included Alice, which Marisa spied on. The third stage is Aya and Hatate, which Aya snapped pictures of Marisa in the episode, but Hatate did not debut. The fourth epsiode included Marisa, Reimu and Sakuya, in which Marisa and Reimu did duel Yuyuko in the episode, and Sayuka was seen looking for Reimu. The fifth stage included the Perfect Cherry Blossom Trio, Chen and Ran and Yukari, where Chen was pestering Marisa, and Ran, Yukari was at the party. I think that the TLB is the tree spirit, and Yuyuko succeeds making the tree bloom, at the cost of her current life, waiting for reincarnation soon.The ending shows trees because the tree finally blooms. The secret boss? Maybe it's Yuyuko's evil soul, so Yuyuko must fight it to keep control, it did say the name is Scarlet Wing, and it looks like a butterfly to me.
