  • Reggie Young is one of the most recorded, and most imitated session guitarists of all time. His timeless intro's, fills, and solos have elevated thousands of songs over his seven decades of work in the recording studio. In part 1 of our Truetone Lounge interview, we cover Reggie's early years in Memphis playing with the Bill Black Combo and sessions at Royal Studios, all the way up to his early work with Chips Moman at American Sound Studios. Reggie passed away January 17, 2019.

Yes pure class only stumbled on Zac's content in the last few days but it's compelling content. Well researched and fantastic understated interviewing style allows the artists to shine, like a good guitarist knowing when to leave gaps as important as the right notes.

God bless you guys for honoring the guitar genius of Reggie Young. Guitar Player Magazine had a very short piece on Reggie recently, but it was pitifully short. This man has forgotten more guitar and recording knowledge than most folks will ever learn. One of my all time favorite guitar players. I would love to meet and speak with him someday, but this is the next best thing.

If for no other reason than the signature opening riff on Drift Away, have always been a great fan of this magic session player. Doesn't seem, and I may be wrong here, he didn't tour much. Then have read a number of times that he got so much demand for session work that even increasing his rates did not reduce the demand for his stellar talents.

Zac, just let me add my thanks to those of others for interviewing and shining the light on the incredible Reggie Young. Guys like him who work their magic mostly in the studios unfortunately often don't get the acclaim and exposure that they deserve. The pros know who he is, but not enough of the public does. Even though they probably have heard a lot of his work! Reggie is such a legend and for good reason. If he'd have hung up his guitar after his tenure at American Studios, and never gone to Nashville, he'd still be deserving of his status as a legend - but just to make sure folks got the message, Reggie conquered Nashville, too, and was a first-call session man there, too, for many years. Thanks for the memories, Reggie and rest in peace....

As a fan of Jerry Lee Lewis I always wanted to know what was his impression of him as he played on some of Jerry's sessions. Another gretmat one was Joe South who I think he played with him too. Who would be Reggie's favourite artist after all the ones he knew?

That is Reggie also, from a number of years ago. All the playing in this episode and the intro are Reggie Young.

I greatly appreciate the way Zac let's his guests talk, instead of making the interview all about him, like SO MANY interviewers do...very refreshing !!!!

The Box Tops' Cry Like A Baby and Petula Clark's Memphis are two of my all time favorite albums. Reggie Young is one of the all time guitar greats.

He was, but so was Glen Campbell and Barney Kessell. Let's just say that he was in that class.
